The ferret is a domestic mammal of the type Mustela putorius furo. Domestic ferrets typically have brown, black, white, or mixed fur, are predators, have an average length of approximately 20 inches (51 cm) including a 5 inch (13 cm) tail, weigh about 1.5-4 pounds (0.8-2 kg) (males are typically substantially larger than the females),[1] and have a natural lifespan of 7 to 10 years.[2][3][4]
Several other small, elongated carnivorous mammals belonging to the family Mustelidae (weasels) also have the word "ferret" in their common names, including an endangered species, the Black-footed Ferret. The ferret is a very close relative of the polecat, but it is as yet unclear whether it is a domesticated form of the European Polecat, the Steppe Polecat, or some hybrid of the two.
The history of the ferret's domestication is uncertain, like that of most other domestic animals. It is very likely that ferrets have been domesticated for at least 2,500 years, but it is not certain for what purpose the ferret was originally domesticated. They are still used for hunting rabbits in some parts of the world today, but increasingly they are being kept simply as pets.
Being so closely related to polecats, ferrets are quite easily able to hybridize with them, and this has occasionally resulted in feral colonies of ferret polecat hybrids that have been perceived to have caused damage to native fauna, perhaps most notably in New Zealand. As a result, some parts of the world have imposed restrictions on the keeping of ferrets.

Norton Ultra 78 B/F Door Slammer!
animal pound
A Norton 78 B/F door slammer, I mean door closer. It's on the front door to our building about 6 feet outside my apartment. It slams, the wall shakes, my wall shakes. Yay! It has adjustments for closing speed and the closing velocity just before latching. Supposedly it can be adjusted (found the manual for it online).

The problem is that they salvaged it from a WWI u-boat or something so it has excellent slamming action with the hydraulics having gone out sometime in the 1950s, but the ultra slamming spring is still in great shape. If people just let go of the door it slams into the door frame with enough force to smash uranium atoms and create a nuclear reaction that would wipe out all of Northern California. Good thing the frame and door aren't made of uranium. Needless to say it creates a loud noise and my entire apartment shudders.

Some people who live here actually grab the door and try to close it gently rather than letting it SLAM at train-wreck speeds. Other people just fling it open and let it go. They don't care since it's not right outside their apartment. I should find out which apartments they live in and pound on their walls at random times to see how that goes over with them. My theory is that they were raised by gorillas or in a barn. I favor the gorilla theory since at least barns have doors and the other animals might have mentioned to them not to slam doors at some point while they were growing up.

Skateboard guy always flings and slams. He flings it open, throws his skateboard down and "Skates or Dies" away to try outrunning the shockwave it creates. Thanks moron.

But even worse is "rico suave all-night pus dog," who routinely comes home sometime between 1 and 4 am after a hard night pleasing the ladies with his hairy chest and mountains of gold chains. He flings the door wide and lets it go causing a minor earthquake that is slowly moving the earth from its axis. Needless to say, mr. lady pleaser wakes me up when he comes home. Thank you dill weed. I've got some plans that will stop your little love escapades and subsequent slamming action. We're talking Loreena Bobbitt here. One of these nights I'll be waiting to shove your manhood and any other pieces of your anatomy that get in the way in front of the door you flung open and just in time for them to get in the way of the slamming action. The door will find a new use as a special kind of guillotine. You won't be pleasing those ladies much more. We're talking very soon.

I'm hoping the maintenance guy will fix the damn thing or buy a model a little more recently made than 94 years ago.

Mandrill

The Mandrill is a endangered baboon. Like the hamadryas baboon, the male is twice as large as teh female. Unlike the hamadryas baboon (whose male can reach 50 pounds), the male mandrill can weigh more than 60 pounds.

Their diet consists of fruits, nuts, vegetables, and small animals.

They are found in tropical forests of Equatorial Africa.

My 2008 Utah bull elk
animal pound
I harvested this bull elk in Northern Utah in November 2008. Having this opportunity to take such an amazing animal was an incredible challenge and thrill. I scouted for months and then watched this bull for several days before the hunt. I was a 4 mile, very difficult hike to his location. I made a much-practiced 320 yard shot to kill him instantly in his bed.

He weighed over 1000 pounds and the antlers score around 370 inches Boone & Crockett.

Abstract
The aqueous extract of Hyptis suaveolens leaves was studied for their antinociceptive property in chemical and thermal models of nociception in mice. Oral administration of the aqueous extract (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) dose-dependently reduced the number of writhings induced by acetic acid, decreased the licking activity of the early phase in formalin test and increased the reaction time in hot-plate test. The antinociceptive effect was significantly antagonized by naloxone (3 mg/kg; i.p.). Preliminary acute toxicity study showed that no animal death with doses up to 5 g/kg (p.o.).

Poisonous caterpillars are the latest species to become a dangerous threat to make its way to Florida.

There are four types of venomous caterpillars that use their spines to attack by projecting poison at potential enemies.

Of all the unusual species to call south Florida home - from African rats to burmese pythons - these types of caterpillars can cause the worst anguish.

The four types of caterpillars with the awful venom include the saddleback caterpillar, the puss caterpillar, the io caterpillar and the hag caterpillar.

When they attack humans, the venom can be unbearable, particularly if the saddleback releases its poison.

South Florida resident Michael Stanwyck told the Sun-Sentinel: It's like somebody lit you on fire.'

He went on to say: 'A bee sting times a hundred.'

THE FOUR TYPES OF POISONOUS CATERPILLARS IN FLORIDA

There are four types of poisonous caterpillars living in Florida and stinging humans:
Io caterpillar

...The io caterpillar, which turns into a colorful moth at full maturity, releases venom when it encounters the slightest touch, or threat.

...Saddleback caterpillar

The saddleback caterpillar have been known to be the most painful as their poison can feel like 'a bee sting times a hundred.' They have 'horns' on each end of their body and their stings can cause swelling and nausea.

...Hag caterpillar

The hag caterpillar, which is light to brown in color, is not as common as the other types with their hairs being used to sting.

...Puss caterpillar

The puss caterpillar have stiff spines with poison glands under their soft hair that break off onto humans' skin causing great pain when they are touched.
.
....................................
.

The species is most threatening around this time of year in Florida as the weather starts to get warmer.

Eggs begin to hatch and the caterpillars grow to become moths.

Some people, although rare, can have an allergic reaction to the toxins. and are encouraged to call 911 or go to hospital.

They can experience vomiting, shortness of breath and other reactions.

Others with less severe attacks can be treated at home by calling Poison Control.

Scotch tape can be placed over the wounded area and stripped off over and over again to remove the spines from within the skin.

Although their poison is painful, the caterpillars are not looking to harm anyone or anything. Jaret Daniels, assistant professor of entomology at the University of Florida, told the Sun-Sentine that they are merely trying to protect themselves.

The venom is used as the caterpillars' predators, like birds and lizards.

Mr Daniels said: If you're a caterpillar, you have a very challenging life because everything wants to eat you.

'They're not trying to hurt you. They're doing it to avoid being eaten.'

Florida has become a popular new home for interesting creatures, including crocodiles that can grow up to 14 feet long.

The reptiles have multiplied 10-fold in the last 40 years in south Florida with about 1,500 crocodiles.
But now they face a new challenge in the area because most of the places they used to call home are now inhabited by humans.

Humans in Florida also have to worry about huge pythons that are wiping out the state's mammal populations.

A burgeoning population of Burmese pythons — many of them pets that were turned loose by their owners when they got too big — appears to be wiping out large numbers of raccoons, opossums, bobcats and other mammals in the Everglades, according to a study from the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences.

The study found that sightings of medium-size mammals are down dramatically — as much as 99 percent, in some cases — in areas where pythons and other large, non-native constrictor snakes are known to be lurking.

Scientists fear the pythons could disrupt the food chain and upset the Everglades' environmental balance in ways difficult to predict.

Another species that has threatened the state's environment are giant Gambian pouch rats that have been found on Florida's Grassy Key despite concerted efforts by conservation officials to eradicate them.

Officials worry that the voracious rats, which grow to nine pounds, might wipe out some crops and upset the delicate ecological balance if they manage to reach the Florida mainland.

Officials worry that the voracious rats, which grow to nine pounds, might wipe out some crops and upset the delicate ecological balance if they manage to reach the Florida mainland.

The Gambian rat first appeared on Grassy Key in 1999 after eight rats escaped from a local exotic pets breeder.

'We thought we had them whipped as of 2009,' Scott Hardin, exotic-species coordinator for the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told keysnet.com.

'In the early part of 2011, a resident e-mailed me and said he saw one of the rats. We were skeptical but went back and talked to people and [saw] there were rats that we missed,' he added.

After four female rats were found in 2011, officials unsuccessfully launched another effort to kill them in November and December, primarily through the use of poison-laced cantaloupe and peanut butter.

And it might become difficult to control crocodiles' interaction with humans if that population continues to grow.

Crocodiles tend to stick to an area they decided they will live in now matter how much they have moved.

So even if they leave a particular spot they chose as their own for weeks and travel far away, they are likely to return.

They will likely continue to be one of the many species like boa constrictors, Nile monitor lizards, vervet monkeys and more to join the state - and wreak havoc on local animal species.

I've been stung by these 7 or 8 times during the last 2 weeks....

This may sound strange, but I promise you it works - Take a small clump of chewing tobacco, wet it, and leave it on the area where you got stung for about a minute or two...The pain will be gone almost immediately. I think what we have is Kodiak Wintergreen or something like that (no I don't chew the stuff), but it's in a small can; probably -/can, and well worth having around!

Works for bee stings too.

Bordesley Middleway - Camp Hill - plaque - Site of the Ship Inn
animal pound
At Bordesley Middleway and Camp Hill Circus in Birmingham.

Kept seeing a plaque at the end of the middleway near Camp Hill so wanted to see what it said.

Had a feeling a building must have been demolished when the middleways were built and I was right!

The plaque is about the Ship Inn that used to be here from 1560 to 1972.

During the Civil War it may have been the headquarters of Prince Rupert, when he attacked Birmingham on Easter Monday with 2000 men in 1643.

The Old Ship Inn, Camp Hill

The "Ship Inn", so called since the early 1800s and previously known as the "Anchor", was very elderly (as average buildings go). The original half-timbered farm building, with stables, barn and dairy was said to originate from 1560 and was a stop for coaches and wagons on the route to Birmingham. The "Bord" - the parish pound, used to hold stray animals until they were claimed by their owners, was situated alongside the building.

The "Anchor" was into its 70s when Civil War broke out in England and in 1643 the building was, according to the heading over the front entrance, used as Prince Rupert's headquarters in April of that year, whilst he burned many of the buildings of Birmingham. The "Anchor" was reputed to be a favourite resort of the EighteenthCentury English Labouring-Class Poet, John Freeth and his friends in the late 1700s.

The building used to sit at the junction of Sandy Lane and Camp Hill and survived until shortly after this photograph was taken. The old inn was pulled down in 1867 and a new building using the original foundations and cellars took its place. The new "Ship Hotel" survived until the adjacent roads required re-organisation in the 1970s. The Camp Hill Flyover, a temporary traffic solution (which lasted 26 years), was demolished in the 1980s and the Camp Hill Circus traffic island expanded to swallow the whole site.

So last night we adopted another dog. This brings the total number of pets in our house to five, 2 dogs and 3 cats.

We have named him Bosco & he is 9 months old. We were told he was a Husky/Shepherd mix, however for 9 months he is only 40 pounds and very small (not skinny, just small) so our vet does not believe he has much Husky or Shepherd in him. He is very loving and gentle. He still has that puppy energy, and loves to play. He doesn't care much for the cats, and gets along with Bailey no problem. We rescued him from the Take Me Home organization. We believe he originated from Mississippi, and at one time had a loving home as he shows no signs of aggression.

I'll try and keep you updated as we housebreak & train him. He is sure to become a picture whore!

I found her in my back yard when I got home this afternoon - she had been busy - she had dug four separate holes under the fence - it took 110 pounds of dirt to fill the holes.

A Vegetarian Invented the UFC MMA BJJ Ultimate Fighting Brazilian JiuJitsu Gracie Barra - Gracie Diet - Not Paleo Lowcarb Crossfit Fad Scam - 8
animal pound
Image by UFC MMA BJJ ULTIMATE FIGHTER CAGE FIGHTING INFO
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was invented by a Vegetarian. His name is Rorion Gracie. It is the origin of octagon cage fighting and modern mixed martial arts as we have come to know it today in the octagon. The vegetarian also created the practice of cage fighting in an Octagon, the octagon was also invented by the vegetarian.

You may have heard of Gracie Jiujitsu. This was invented by Rorion Gracie's father, Helio Gracie, of the Gracie Family, the forefather of Gracie Barra. Helio Gracie, the inventor of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu GJJ was also a vegetarian.

Uncle Carlos is Carlos Gracie, brother of Helio Gracie, a vegetarian and that is who developed BJJ, Brazialian Jiu Jitsu. BJJ is a must-learn technique for every MMA fighter in the UFC today, if not in the world. That is, if they want to win, the meat-eater had better learn what was invented a hundred years ago by a Vegetarian man or they won't last the ring.

Pollo-Vegetarian Royce Gracie also won the very 1st UFC #1! And the vegetarian had to fight those who weighed up to 250+ pounds! Not only did he beat all the other meat-eaters, he beat all the other meat-eaters in 1 night!

And then to prove it wasn't an accident, he did it again! A vegetarian also won UFC #2 and vegetarians have been dominant in the UFC ever since, though you may not know it just like you probably didn't know vegetarians invented it.

Vegetarian Mac Danzig beat all the other meat-eaters to take the belt on THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER. Danzig is not just vegetarian, he is vegan, and he was the largest, most massive muscular man on the entire show.

Vegetarian Nick Diaz also won THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER. So did Nate Diaz, also a vegetarian. The StrikeForce middleweight champion Jake Shields is a vegetarian. Heavyweight Frank Mir ate vegetarian at 280 pounds. Randy Couture beat 6 foot 8 Tim Sylvia and Couture trains on an alkaline plant-based diet. The EliteXC martial arts belt holder is a vegetarian. UFC fighter Aaron Simpson is a vegetarian. Jon Fitch ranked #2 in the world at the current time is vegetarian. Ben Saunders MMA fighter is a Vegetarian. Luke Cuomo who made it to the semi-finals and the finals on The Ultimate Fighter eats vegetarian. WEC champion Urijah Faber trains on a plant-based diet. MMA fighter Kyra Gracie is vegetarian. Ryron Gracie of the Gracie Mixed Martial Arts clan is vegetarian.

Penny Thomas, the world Brazilian Jiujitsu womens champion is vegetarian. Nicolas Gregorades of the Jiujitsu Brotherhood fighting academy is virtually all vegetarian. Shanti belha, 2-time world Brazilian Jiujitsu fighting champion is vegetarian. Ahmed El Ghandouri, Brazilian Kiujitsu Black Belt is a vegan.

Dave Meyer of the American BJJ Academy and a blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Machado--is vegetarian.

The original ultimate fighters the roman Gladiators were mainly vegetarian. Kung Fu was developed by the Shaolin Monks who were vegetarian. The very Art of Martial Arts itself was invented by Bodhidharma who was from India, and was a vegetarian.

Bellator Fighting Championships Ricardo Moreira is a vegan. Eric the Bengal Castile, in the UFC is a vegetarian. Heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson is now a vegan. StrikeForce fighter and NFL Football player and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker is a vegetarian. The Dream3 Grand Prix Fighting championship belt is owned by a vegetarian.

The TITAN Fighting Championships fight winner Jason High is a vegetarian. Vegetarians are now ranked in the top 2,3,and 5 spots in the best p4p in the world in the UFC welterweight division, meaning that vegetarians hold 66% of the top rankings in the UFC's welterweight division. Antonio McKee who established Rampage Jackson's Gym is a vegan. AKC trains vegetarian UFC fighters. Noah Hannibal "The VEGAN TANK" is a vegetarian powerlifter who beat all his other opponents and took gold in the Australian Powerlifting championships. MMA Fighter Dale Hart is a vegetarian and has an unblemished 5 and 0 record. All wins.

MMA fighter Erik Purcell is a vegetarian. The vegetarian Purcell just beat 6 foot 6 inch Aaron Skates at the Reality Fighting Championships. King of the Cage fighter Tom Kenny is vegetarian.

UFC Heavyweight contender Shane Carwin is now training vegan. Heavyweight 120kilogram Jan Muller is vegetarian. JiuJitsu champion Henry Atkins is vegan. MMA Fighter Georgi Krakhanyan is vegetarian.

Finland fighter Harri Nieminem is vegetarian. So is James WIlks, vegetarian UFC fighter from England in the UK.

And many more. You probably didn't realize that so many UFC fighters and current belt holders and MMA champions were vegetarians, because they are often not preachy about it and don't make it known, but they have recognized the best most-athletic and muscular endurance diet for athletes and UFC fighters is plant-based vegetarian and vegan. Your cardio power shoots through the roof. You can out-last, out-hit, and out-muscle other opponents who don't know what hit them. Plus, nobody wants meat-eaters to find out that a vegetarian diet is better, that's like giving away the secret, so vegan and vegetarian fighters sometimes keep tight lipped and let meat eaters continue to post and convince all the others that meat or steak is what you need before a fight, that way their opponents will gas, get tired out, be weak and not have any strength, and once again lose do to a meat-based diet. Lowcarb is even funnier since you can actually get opponents to go around eating bacon, sausage, and piles of fat and get them loaded down, obese, and likely to fall over, that is if they even make weight. Likewise the Paleo Diet has now been found fake and scientifically wrong, proven wrong by actual Paleontologists. Turns out the original discoverer of Australopithecus, a real paleontologist revealed man's ancient ancestors were vegetarian, including Australopithecus africanus, Paranthropus boisei, Ardipithecus ramidus, all vegetarian ancestors of man that came millions of years BEFORE paleo man. Turns out the Paleo Diet was fabricated by a "gym teacher" who was not even a paleontologist and was never on even 1 archeological dig.

The Paleo Diet was ranked 24th by experts in nutrition, problem is there were just 24 in the list for review, which means The Paleo Diet came in LAST place, the worst diet of all. --Yes, the Paleo Diet was found deficient, pseudo-scientific nonsense made to appear like it was scientific, and the Paleo Diet lost and landed in last place as the worst. This is also a reason why crossfit has become the laughing-stock of the athletic and fitness world, akin to the shake-weight of fitness. Or the mullet. Crossfit fitness centers often have what's called a "puke bucket" lying around. They like to claim this as somehow being proof that their workouts of little light burpees and things is 'so tough' but really it's just because crossfit people start eating the Paleo Diet and it tastes so bad and is so horrible for fitness and athletes that they vomit it back up. All kinds of partially digested meat and so forth, right there in the gym when they work out. Didn't know this? Do a search for "Crossfit Puke Bucket" you'll see it. They even wear T-shirts bragging about puking on it in crossfit, because the paleo diet tastes so bad. Imagine how much worse it tastes on the way back up. Robb Wolf recommending sausages and things. Great for sausage-lovers probably, but not real ironmen or mma fighters or real athletes.

Crossfit is pretty much like ladies' pilates. MovNat is like having someone come over and do your housework, carrying out the trash, and mopping up the bathroom for you. In any case, the foods recommended by the gym teacher who peddled the Paleo Diet were found nutritionally deficient, and Paleo Diet foods have now been linked to colorectal cancer (cancer of the butt). This is why Paleo and Crossfit have become ridiculed as 'so silly not even a caveman did it'. Referring to the fact that the Paleo Diet told to people in the books is NOT even what paleolithic man turned out to eat. For instance, on a real paleo diet, you'd have to eat maggots in your meat, afterall, paleo man scavenged putrifying meat. Also you can't refrigerate your meat, on a paleo diet, then you'll need to keep your meat outside, in the hot sun, because paleo man originated in Africa. So on Paleo you'll need to eat luke warm rotted meat, brimming with botfy maggots in it. Oh, and you can't drink treated disinfected water, cavemen didn't have tapwater out of faucets, sorry. Nor bottled water. So if you're on paleo you'll have to drink out of some watering-hole where animals wash themselves.

Drinking feces ound delicious? If you think so, then Paleo is for you. Just don't expect girls or the ladies to be around you because unlike vegetarians, men on a Paleo Diet it's been shown to cause horrible B.O. stink and odor. Oh, and paleo man didn't have a toothbrush. So ladies, if your boyfriend ot date is paleo, look forward to low stamina, offensive Body Odor smells, cavemen didn't have showers, and getting close to a mouth full of bacteria because paleo man didn't brush their teeth.

Vegetarians do not have this problem. And last longer, were scientifically measured in tests to have More Testosterone than meat eaters, smell better, comb their hair, and have higher stamina, and endurance. And better protectors. Afterall, vegetarians invented Martial Arts, BJJ, and the UFC.

Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis) - display

The Striped Skunk, Mephitis mephitis, is an omnivorous mammal of the skunk family Mephitidae. Found over most of the North American continent north of Mexico, it is one of the best-known mammals in Canada and the United States. The Striped Skunk has a black body with a white stripe along each side of its body; the two stripes join into a broader white area at the nape. Its forehead has a narrow white stripe. About the size of a house cat, it weighs 2.5 to 14 pounds (1.2–6.3 kg) with a body length (excluding the tail) of 13 to 18 inches (33–46 cm). The bushy tail is 7 to 10 inches long (18–25 cm), and sometimes has a white tip. The presence of a Striped Skunk is often first made apparent by its odor. It has well-developed anal scent glands (characteristic of all skunks) that can emit a highly unpleasant odor when the skunk feels threatened by another animal. The skunk is crepuscular. Beginning its search for food at dawn and dusk, it feeds on mice, eggs, carrion, insects, grubs, and berries. At sunrise, it retires to its den, which may be in a ground burrow, or beneath a building, boulder, or rock pile. While the male dens by itself, several females may live together. The Striped Skunk does not hibernate.

Grand Canyon Nat Park: Elk (Cervus elaphus) in Winter: 1815
animal pound
Elk (Cervus elaphus) are frequently seen in and around Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Bull elk grow antlers annually from the time they are nearly one year old. When mature, a bull’s "rack" may have 6 to 8 points or tines on each side and weigh more than 30 pounds. The antlers are usually shed in March or April, and begin regrowing in May, when the bony growth is nourished by blood vessels and covered by furry-looking "velvet." Antler growth ceases each year by August, when the velvet dries up and bulls begin to scrape it off by rubbing against trees, in preparation for the autumn mating season or rut.

A bull may gather 10-30 cows into his harem during the mating season, often clashing or locking antlers with another mature male for the privilege of dominating the herd group. By November, mating season ends. Calves weighing 25-40 pounds are born in late May or early June. NPS photo by Michael Quinn.

Never approach wild animals. Photograph all wildlife from the safety of your vehicle. Use telephoto lenses and observe quietly. It is dangerous, and illegal, to feed wild animals in a national park. Violators will be fined. Wildlife can become dependent upon handouts and lose their ability to hunt and forage. Such animals lose their fear of humans. They can become aggressive and bite, kick, or gore. Many are struck by cars while searching for handouts. Help us keep wildlife wild. Never feed or approach wildlife.

There are 14 described subspecies of the Galapagos tortoise of which 11 still exist, some with only small populations. There are "dome-shelled" and "saddle-backed" Galapagos tortoises. Where ground vegetation is the main source of food the animals are dome-shelled. Those that feed on higher growing cactus have a curved shell front to allow their longer neck to reach the pads. Galapagos tortoises vary in size from 29 inches (shell length) and 60 pounds to 4 feet and 700 pounds. There is little variation in color, overall dull-brown being standard. The male has concave underside, which facilitates mating.

Eye of a Yak...

I'm sure many of you woke up this morning thinking that you'd love to see an eye of a Yak. Well, here is the eye of a 2,000-pound Yak!

BTW, this is the same male Yak that charged his metal fence during my previous visit to the Zoo when I came up to take a photograph. It scared the hell out of me! A Zoo caretaker saw the 'encounter' and came over so I asked him why in the world did he charge me with such amazing ferocity?

His theory was that I was 'eye-balling' his women! This gigantic Yak has a group of 3 female Yaks and I guess he thought I was paying way too much attention to them trying to photograph them. This may be total BS but that's what the Zoo guy said.

I usually have very cordial relations with Zoo animals but this guy really wanted to stomp me into the ground, you could see it in his eye! When he hit the very strong welded-metal pipe fence, the ground shook and dirt went flying. Plus, the sound of the impact was, to say the least, startling!

Alright, this photo is by complete chance. I swear it's not posed. On our usual walk/jog around my school we stopped to take a few pictures of Piper on the bench in front of the flag and I happened to get the shot.

On another note, I took this picture mainly thinking about a theme for "Blue". I've recently joined a photo club for the year and I'm trying to get creative. I'll post any and all of my photos for the photo club. Promise.

Leopard & Impala

Leopard (Panthera pardus)
The leopard inhabits the forests, mountains and grasslands of Africa and Asia. It can be found in all of sub-Saharan Africa and west of the Kalahari. They also occur in China, India, Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nepal. It is abundant throughout its range, despite being extensively hunted for its skins.

The leopard is the smallest of the great cats (lion, tiger, jaguar, leopard). Males are up to 50% larger than the females; this is why there is such a variation in its size. The leopard has an elongated body set on relatively short and stocky legs. The paws are broad. Its ears are short and rounded. They have a very short and sleek coat. Their color varies from light tawny to deep rusty yellow, with a lighter underside. They have dark spots on their face, head, throat, chest, and legs. The rest of their body is covered in "rosettes". Leopards can also be totally black.

Leopards can also be all black, a condition known as "melanism", which is common amongst the spotted cats. Black leopards, also known as panthers, are not a separate species, but the same species of leopard. The spots can still be seen, as dark black rosettes on a lighter dark brown background. Melanistic leopards and normal leopards have been known to occur in the same litter. Black leopards are more common in areas with denser trees.

The leopard's dark rosettes help it to blend into the foliage while stalking their prey. Like human fingerprints, each individual leopard's spots are unique.

There are many subspecies of leopards, since the have such a wide range. The Somali leopard lives in Somalia and Ethiopia, and is the smallest of all the leopards, weighing only 50-60 pounds, males 50% larger than females. The Arabian leopard is the second smallest leopard. The Amur and Javan leopards have unusual coat patterns, with darker fur and wider spaced rosettes.

Leopards are opportunistic hunters. They will eat just about anything. Their diet consists of monkeys, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, wild pigs, and ungulates. It stalks its prey silently and at the last minute pounces on its prey and cuts its throat with a quick bite. It hunts during the day to avoid contact with lions and hyenas, who hunt mainly at night. When it kills animals such as gazelle, it carries them up into the trees to eat it. Leopards are capable of carrying animals up to twice their own weight into the trees.

Pteridium aquilinum var. decompositum

Kīlau, kīlau pueo, paiʻā, bracken, or Hawaiian bracken fern
Subspecies is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands
ʻAiea Loop Trail, Oʻahu

Growing with the invasive Koster's Curse (Clidemia hirta).

Bracken has been used throughout in many cultures around the world. The fiddlehead (immature unfurled fronds) are bitter, but used fresh, cooked, or preserved by pickling, salting, or sun drying. For example, in Korea, called gosari, they are used in bibimbap or gosari-namul, a sauteed side dish; and as a vegetable dish in Japan, called wasari.

Native Americans pound the rhizomes in making a stachy flour for bread; and in Japan used a starch to make confections.

In Hawaii, kīlau is collected and use in wasari. But "because bracken fern has cancerous properties and a nerve poison, it should be eaten infrequently and in moderation."

A substitute for bracken, is the Vegetable fern (Diplazium esculentum), naturalized in Hawaii, and often called hōʻiʻo in local markets. Hōʻiʻo can be prepared the same way as bracken, but "is not known to have these anti-nutritional qualities so it can be eaten freely." The species name esculenta is Latin for edible, alluding to the use of this fern for food.

Bracken has been used as fodder for animals, but it can injure or poison them. So, it often used as litter in animal pens.

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center: Concorde

Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Concorde, Fox Alpha, Air France:

The first supersonic airliner to enter service, the Concorde flew thousands of passengers across the Atlantic at twice the speed of sound for over 25 years. Designed and built by Aérospatiale of France and the British Aviation Corporation, the graceful Concorde was a stunning technological achievement that could not overcome serious economic problems.

In 1976 Air France and British Airways jointly inaugurated Concorde service to destinations around the globe. Carrying up to 100 passengers in great comfort, the Concorde catered to first class passengers for whom speed was critical. It could cross the Atlantic in fewer than four hours - half the time of a conventional jet airliner. However its high operating costs resulted in very high fares that limited the number of passengers who could afford to fly it. These problems and a shrinking market eventually forced the reduction of service until all Concordes were retired in 2003.

In 1989, Air France signed a letter of agreement to donate a Concorde to the National Air and Space Museum upon the aircraft's retirement. On June 12, 2003, Air France honored that agreement, donating Concorde F-BVFA to the Museum upon the completion of its last flight. This aircraft was the first Air France Concorde to open service to Rio de Janeiro, Washington, D.C., and New York and had flown 17,824 hours.

Bloodthirsty killers.
animal pound
Five months ago. I honestly thought he wasn't going to get that much bigger! And I was seriously WRONG.

I applied to adopt a Bedlington Terrier from the shelter where I take photos to put up on petfinder.com.
On the application, as with any shelter application I'm sure, they ask what pets you currently own. I've brought both of my dogs into the shelter, Israel for a microchip, both for Easter pictures, I talk about Judah all the time. I don't lie and say Israel's a "mix" since it's obvious that he's NOT. Judah is a total mutt but she's also the sweetest thing to walk the earth (unless you're trying to clip her nails.)
Judah loves kids, strangers, and all dogs and cats, too.
Israel isn't even that bad with strange dogs. We can go into PetsMart with little drama. At least nothing that he starts. He's not chomping at the bit to kill other dogs or even acknowledge them. He's awesome with kids--he lays down on his belly and doesn't jump all over them. The worst he does is try to kiss them.
Anyway....Judah I listed as a Rott/Lab mix, because that's what the vet assumed she was when she was 6 weeks old. She sort of looks like a Rott but there's so much else in her. And she's not aggressive--and I don't believe Rottweilers are, either! They CAN be...but so can any dog. You know what I mean.
So I get a call today from the shelter. I've never talked to the woman before and this is now the second dog I applied for. The first was Lunch Box in December and I never heard a word about it, she got adopted, and I was miffed.
She says there's no way I could adopt the smaller dog because of the dogs I have, "bully" breeds, and even though I have a cat (I listed her, too) I wouldn't be allowed to even adopt a cat from them either because of my dogs.
I was insulted but I was polite. I said, "All right..." and she paused and I thought she had something else to add but she didn't and muttered, "Okaybye." and hung up before I could say goodbye. !?!!?

The idea that Judah would ever harm another animal is laughable and it's supremely insulting for someone else to assume so because I wrote down "Rott/Lab mix" on the form, having never met her. Why would I even bother trying to adopt a smaller dog if I wasn't confident that my dogs would handle it???
I still feel like calling back and giving them a piece of my mind, and adding that they should be equally as discriminating when adopting him out since though he looks like a lamb, he's still a terrier and they used to fight his breed, just like my dreaded bloodthirsty pit bull.

Somehow my family (and my cat) have survived so far with these vicious dogs in the house. Hopefully we'll make it through the night! You never know...Israel might go for my jugular tonight as I sleep. Or Judah might start to eat my leg while she's at the end of the bed. I should really watch my back. ::rolls eyes::

We all know how much I love my dogs. I don't make excuses for them because I really never have to as far as their behaviour (sometimes Israel is the exception) but Judah honestly is that well-behaved and stable. I have said time and again that I would trust her alone with my newborn. She was left alone with a 1 pound chihuahua puppy and Judah was more afraid than the puppy. Even Israel got on so well with the chi, stretched out on his belly, wagging his tail as she bit his nose. The only reason I wouldn't leave them alone together is because he could easily crush her if he stepped on her--and Israel has no concept of his size or strength yet.

I guess it's for the better. I'm closing on my house on Friday, I'll be moving in soon enough, and I want to adopt a greyhound. I emailed the organization I've been looking at to ask if they have a policy against adopting out to households with certain breeds. It never really occurred to me...
I guess I was being naive.

Waterbucks are large, stately, easily recognized antelope with straight backs and coarse, shaggy coats. Their coats are gray to grayish-brown, and their legs are darker in color. The animals have conspicuous semi-circular white patches of color on their rumps. Their long-stranded hair seems to be waterproofed by skin glands as an adaptation to their frequent and lengthy stays in the water. It is generously covered with thin brownish, tar-like grease that has a distinct, turpentine-like odor. Males have sharply pointed horns that are prominently ringed and strongly curved backwards and upwards. Females do not have horns. The sexes are equal in size and can weigh 600 pounds and stand 39 inches at the shoulder.

Happy Easter everyone!!!
(Easter Bunnies pray too!)

NOTE: With Easter arriving, many families decide to give the gift of a bunny in the spirit of the season. Rabbits make wonderful animal companions in the home. But contrary to common belief, they are not “low maintenance” pets.

Also I don't condone it, buying rabbits on (or near) Easter simply for the holiday causes negligence. Please be sure that you and/or your child is ready to take on the responsibility of a bunny. Often times they get over 15 pounds and live as long as 10 years.
