lemur
wildlife animals
Let me introduce you to one of the lemur species of Madagascar's rich fauna. This is the crowned lemur - it is easy to see where the species got it's name. Right?
Their scietntific latin name is 'eulemur coronatus'. This is the smallest species of the genus Eulemur they can weight about 1,5 to 1,8 kilograms. We both saw this species at 'National parc de montagen d'Ambre' as well as in 'Ankarana special reserve'.
At Ankarana they are even semi-tame and hang around the camp place waiting for a mango pith to be ignorantly thrown away.

They are classified as vulnerable and appear on the CITES I list. That is not a list of honor it means that they are seriously endangered. The dangers for these animals are los of habitat by logging , forest fires , development. They appear in 4 restricted areas that should be protected. (responsible tourism can bring in some needed cash to maintain the parcs)
For this species the Madagascar Fauna Group has set up a captive breeding program.

These animals can easely be seen since they are day active. If you wander through the forest you'll meet small family groups - 4 to 6 is an average group , but up to 15 individuals is possible. They feed on leaves , fruits and branches and sometimes on rare occasions on bird eggs and vertebrates.Mating occurs in May and June and 125 days later one of two youngsters are born. Two years later the cyclus can start again.
I like their long tails ,up to 49cm for an animal with a body lenght of 34 - 36 cm its huge.

Mooses

And now we begin our first of two full days in Denali National Park. The park is huge, being over 6 million acres (roughly the size of Massachusetts, or something like 25,000 square kilometers). And, in all that vast space there is exactly one (yeah, like 1!) road into the park, a narrow (esp. by American standards) two lanes that dead end at either Wonder Lake (after 85 miles) or Kantishna (after 90 miles).

The highway between Anchorage and Fairbanks (the two largest cities in Alaska) was only completed back In 1972 (that's in my lifetime!). Correctly anticipating a significant increase in visitors, Park officials worried that increased traffic along the one and only road in the park would adversely both the environment of the park and the relationship between the wildlife and humans. Consequently they closed this road to general traffic and brought in a fleet of school buses to shuttle visitors in and out of the Park.

On our first day in the Park, we took on of these shuttle buses out to Wonder Lake and back, which is roughly an 11 hour round trip. The next gazillion photos will be from that trip... Aren't you excited?!?

This first shot was of some moose along the side of the road very shortly after we'd boarded, and before we'd really left the inhabited part of the Park around the Visitor's Center.

When there's a wildlife sighting, the buses stop to let everyone have a view. This often consists of one or more tiny specks in the far distance (pretty much all my bear pictures are of that variety), but occassionally something decides to pose up close in the hopes of being featured on a postcard :-). While these two look cute, moose are one of the most dangerous animals in the park, especially if you get between a mother and her calf. We were repeatedly told not to run if you encounter a bear (they'll think you're prey and give chase), but to run like the dickens if you encounter a moose...

The grandeur of Lamar Valley
wildlife animals
Image by Jim Nix / Nomadic Pursuits
Lamar Valley sits in Yellowstone National Park and has been called the Serengeti of the North because there is so much wildlife there to see. I was only there a short while, but during that time I saw a coyote eating a small animal that he had captured; I saw bison grazing - it's hard to avoid them in Yellowstone; and I saw a black wolf cruising around. It was amazing. The valley is surrounded by mountains and is a beautiful place. There is a single road that winds through the valley where it disappears back into the forest at the other end. The scenery there is incredible - I highly recommend seeing this place at least once in your lifetime!

Rockpooling at Rhossili

Image by Visit Swansea Bay, Mumbles and Gower
The Independent's report on the best places in the UK to watch wildlife gave Gower a special mention:

"Our coastlines provide some of the richest wildlife habitats in the country, and the Gower Peninsula in Wales was the first area in the UK to be designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The wide variety of habitats - cliffs, sand dunes, marshes and woodland - attract a huge range of animals, including rare dune-dwelling insects, otters and badgers.

But the highlight is the birdlife, particularly around Worm's Head. The caves peppering the coastline are home to bats during spring. Walk from the visitors' centre at Rhossili to Rhossili Down Commons for fantastic views of Worm's Head."

Coyote, Yosemite National Park

This coyote (Canis Latrans) was walking up and down by a rest stop near Glacier Point, begging for food from every car that slowed down. I was lucky enough to have the right lens attached and got several very close shots through the open car window.

Although there are strict rules against feeding the wildlife, I have to assume that these are ignored by enough visitors that animals like this one associate cars with food.

I would greatly appreciate your vote in the 2012 Photoblog Awards. Thanks!

Stag (Elk and more Mule Deer in the Comments)

Image by ClickFlashPhotos / Nicki Varkevisser
I love deer. I have dreams about them.

Photographing wildlife is so exhilarating. I don't have that good of a zoom lens, I was extremely close to all of these animals and it is such a humbling experience. These were taken in Grand Canyon National Park where I guess the animals are fairly desensitized to tourists because they all seemed quite comfortable around me. It wasn't as if they had been fed either, none badgered me for food. It was almost eerie how they didn't run away at the sound of the shutter like the deer where I live.

Bandhavgarh
wildlife animals
Captan Suresh Sharma and I just returned from three day trip to Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh. The National Park, formally established in 1968 was the hunting reserve of the erstwhile rulers of Rewa. Spread over an area of 108 Square KM in the core area and a buffer zone of nearly 500 Sq.KM, this tiger reserve is famous for its large population of tigers. Though the Park has a rich variety of fauna, tigers remain the main attraction. This Park has the greatest density of tigers in India. In summers, the visibility of tigers become more on account of the drying up of seasonal water sources. A few water holes available attract prey and the hunter and of course photographers willing to brave the sweltering summer heat of India.
The small village of Tala where the main gate is situated has a number of hotels and lodges catering to all tastes and purses. Our stay at Nature Heritage (aslo known as Agra Lodge) was very comfortable and lucky. In three days we had over 15 sighting of tigers. As many as 60 species of birds and 12 of wild animals were also seen

Swift Fox Wink
wildlife animals
View On Black

Description
The swift fox Vulpes velox, a member of the canid, or dog, family, is related to wolves, coyotes, dogs, and other foxes. It can be distinguished from other kinds of foxes found in Canada, such as red, arctic, and grey foxes, by its small size (it is about the size of a house cat), the black spot on each side of its nose, and its black-tipped tail.

In winter, the swift fox’s fur is long and dense, mainly buff-grey on the head, back, and upper surface of the tail, and orange-tan on the sides, legs, and lower tail surface. The throat, chest, and belly are light coloured (buff to white). In summer, the fur is short and coarse and more reddish grey.

Males are slightly larger than females, average weights being 2.45 and 2.25 kg, respectively. The animal stands about 30 cm high at the shoulder, and its total length is about 80 cm.

Early settlers of the Canadian plains knew the swift fox as the “kit” fox, and the two names have been used interchangeably since that time. However, studies of the prairie kit fox of Canada and the central United States and the desert kit fox of the southwestern United States showed that the two animals have some differences in appearance. Hence, the plains-dwelling species was designated the “swift” fox, and its desert cousin retained the name “kit” fox.

The swift fox can be distinguished from the kit fox Vulpes macrotis by its shorter, more widely spaced ears and its more rounded and dog-like head. The kit fox is broader between the eyes and has a narrower snout. The swift fox also has a slightly shorter tail, averaging of 52 percent of its body length compared with 62 percent for the kit fox.

That's Why I Crossed the Road
wildlife animals
We spent the morning at the Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in Eatonville. It was a good time to visit, almost nobody was there so it was not crowded. Also all the animals with antlers where at the peak for the year before they loose them for the winter so we got to see their best. This goat was taking his sweet ass time to cross the road in front of the tram; and just stuck out his tongue as he did it.

Red-tailed Hawk with rabbit - yard

I've got over 100 photos over about 40 feet in different light. This was taken on a dirt path after the hawk scurried along the ground when I got too close. I don't think he could take off with the rabbit. I intentionally got closer so that he would scurry even farther into the sunlight where I got half a dozen portraits. As for that crown he's making, a hawk rehabber friend tells me that he was on alert because he had let me get so close!

Here's his portrait:

Congo Buffalo
wildlife animals
Classified as Lower Risk, the Congo or Forest Buffalo can be found in Africa's Rainforest. Mainly grazing on grass and lower level leaves, they are nevertheless powerful fighters and can run at speeds of up to 57 km/hr. Note the swept back horns like the Bongo which allows them to escape predators without tangling up in vegetation.

Where humans have introduced domestic cattle, buffalo populations have sometimes been affected by diseases and parasites carried by the cattle. Buffalo are also threatened by illegal hunting and loss of habitat.

tarantula at the Insectarium in New Orleans
wildlife animals
This little guy was being VERY shy. His front legs were the best I could get.

tarantulas hunt prey primarily in trees; others hunt on or near the ground. All tarantulas can produce silk—while arboreal species will typically reside in a silken "tube tent", terrestrial species will line their burrows with silk to stabilize the burrow wall and facilitate climbing up and down. Tarantulas mainly eat insects and other arthropods, using ambush as their primary method of prey capture. The biggest tarantulas can kill animals as large as lizards, mice, and birds. They can be found in the south and west parts of the USA, Central America, and down throughout South America to the southern parts of Chile, Argentina. Tarantulas can also be found throughout Africa, large parts of Asia and all over Australia. In Europe, there are some species in Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Italy, and in Cyprus. Most tarantulas are harmless to humans, and some species are popular in the exotic pet trade. All tarantulas are venomous, but only some species have venom that, while not known to have ever produced human fatalities, can produce extreme discomfort over a period of several days.
