I gave away the disgusting potato chip imitation. The yogourt pictured here does not contain gelatin, which I will not eat. Everyone else went home with heavy bags of dead turkeys and other animal-based proteins, while this is what I received and went home with. Cheryl Carline of the Vancouver Food Bank Society, or whatever they're called, should be ashamed of herself. She has never provided any vegetarian alternatives, despite phone calls and letters. Yo Cheryl: When the f*ck are you going to wake up and consider others as equals? And why have you never responded positively to a vegetarian request, after many years of opportunity? Vegetarians get f*ck all from official charity.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Cúc liên chi dại

Cúc liên chi dại - Parthenium hysterophorus L., thuộc họ Cúc - Asteraceae.

Mô tả: Cây thảo phân nhánh cao 0,25 đến 1m; thân có rãnh gần như nhẵn. Lá xẻ hai lần lông chim, dài tới 11cm và rộng tới 6cm, các lá trên nguyên, mặt trên có lông bột, mặt dưới có lông xám. Đầu hoa có 5 góc, đường kính 4-8mm, xếp thành chuỳ thưa ở ngọn cây; lưỡi hoa màu trắng, hình thận, nhỏ; hoa nhỏ màu trắng. Quả bế hình trứng ngược rộng, dài cỡ 2mm, có lông ở đỉnh.

Cây có hoa quả kéo dài từ tháng 10 đến tháng 6 năm sau.

Bộ phận dùng: Thân mang lá và lá - Caulis et Folium Parthenii.

Nơi sống và thu hái: Gốc ở châu Mỹ nhiệt đới, được phát tán vào nhiều xứ nhiệt đới khác. Ở nước ta, thường gặp cây mọc dại ở nhiều nơi, nhất là ở Hà Nội và các vùng lân cận dọc theo các đường đi, các bãi cát.

Thành phần hoá học: Cây chứa alcaloid parthenin. Lá và hoa chứa alcaloid parthenicin.

Tính vị, tác dụng: Vị đắng, có tác dụng gây chảy nước bọt, làm giảm đau nhức, làm săn da.

Công dụng, chỉ định và phối hợp: Ở nước ta, cây ít được dùng, nhưng ở một số nước Trung Mỹ như Jamaica, Đôminica, người ta sử dụng lá, đem giã ra và trộn với dầu thầu dầu để xát kích thích sự giảm bớt sản dịch. Thân mang lá hãm hoặc sắc uống để trị chứng tim đập nhanh. Còn được dùng chữa các vết loét, một số bệnh ngoài da, như bệnh ecpet (mụn rộp loang vòng). Các chiết xuất parthenin được dùng với liều nhỏ tăng dần từ 100mg đến 2g để giúp sự tiêu hoá; còn parthenicin, với liều 1g ngày, dùng để làm thuốc hạ nhiệt, giảm đau; với liều cao nó gây độc.

Parthenium hysterophorus is used as a vegetable and in the treatment of various human ailments
traditionally in Pakistan. The current study was arranged to investigate the nutritional importance,
microbial inhibition and its potency against free radicals. The results revealed that extract possesses
macro elements Ca, K, Na, Mg, Fe, Zn, as well as micro elements including Ni, Li, Pb, Co, Mn, Cu, Cr,
and Cd. Scavenging of free radicals revealed that methanolic extract of P. hysterophorus (PM)
possesses lowest IC50 (2.5 ± 0.05 µg/ml) comparatively to ascorbic acid (3.7 ± 0.03) and n-hexane
extract of P. hysterophorus (PH) (5.1 ± 0.07 µg/ml). The extracts also showed maximum antibacterial
potential in various concentrations of n-hexane and methanolic extract of P. hysterophorus. The results
revealed that P. hysterophorus contain a remarkable fungal inhibition due to the presence of bioactive
constituents. Based on this screening various fractions of P. hysterophorus are recommended for
future bioassay guided isolation of bioactive constituents.

It is believed to have entered India accidentally in the mid 1950s, and is now considered is one of the most feared noxious weed species (Rao 1956). Adverse effects of on humans and on animal health have been well documented. It is known to cause asthma, bronchits, dermatitis, and hay fever in man and livestock. The chemical analysis has indicated that all the plants parts including trichomes and pollen contain toxins called sesquiterpene lactones. The major components of toxic being parthenin and other phenolic acids such as caffeic acid, vanillic acid, ansic acid, p-anisic acid, chlorogenic acid, and parahydroxy benzoic acid are lethal to human beings and animals (Mahadevappa 1997; Oudhia 1998). Despite the fact that Parthenium is considered a toxic plant industrial uses are reported in the literatures (Sastri and Kavathekar 1990). A related species, Parthenium argentatum Gray (guayule) yields rubber which can substitute for Hevea rubber.

The word parthenium is derived from the Latin parthenice suggesting medicinal uses (Bailey 1960). John Lindley (1838) in Flora Medica describes the plant as follows: "The whole plant is bitter and strong-scented, reckoned tonic, stimulating and anti-hysteric. It was once a popular remedy in ague. Its odour is said to be peculiarly disagree to bees and that insects may be easily kept at a distance by carrying a handful of the flower heads." In Homoeopathy system, allergies caused by Parthenium can be treated by a drug prepared from Parthenium. In Finland an infusion of Partenium is used in for consumption.

In the Dictionary of Economic Plants in India Parthenium hysterophourus is described as a weed found in Poona and is reported to be used as tonic, febrifuge, and emmenagogue. Root decoction is useful in dysentery (Singh et al. 1996). Mew et al. (1982) demonstrated that sublethal doses of parthenin exhibited antitumor activity in mice and that the drug could either cure mice completely or increase their survival time after they had been injected with cancer cells. Parthenium is also reported as promising remedy against hepatic amoebiasis (Sharma and Bhutani,1988). South American Indian uses a decoction of roots to cure amoebic dysentery (Uphof 1959) whereas parthenin, a toxin of Parthenium, is found pharmacologically active against neuralgia and certain types of rheumatism). In Compendium of Indian Medicinal Plants by Rastogi and Mehrotra (1991) parthenin induced dose-dependent damage to human leucocyte chromosomes in vitro and micronuclei formation in polychromatic erythrocytes of mice is reported (Dominguez and Sierra, 1970).

Parthenium is used as folk remedy in the Caribbean and Central America (Nabie et al. 1996). It is applied externally on skin disorders and decoction of the plant is often taken internally as a remedy for a wide variety of ailments (Dominguez and Sierra 1970; Morton 1981). In Jamaica the decoction is used as a flea-repellent both for dogs and other animals (Morton 1981).

Ruby is a Gloucestershire Old Spots pig who was rescued from a "pastured pork" operation. Even though the pigs get to live outside, runty piglets are still killed. A visitor to the farm offered to take the piglet off the farm's hands and they agreed. She nursed little Ruby back to health and now Ruby lives at Animal Place. She will be spayed and then introduced to the other pigs. She is one cute piglet!!

Conflict in the north of Mali, the entrenchment of armed groups and the spread of instability has led to increased humanitarian suffering across the region.

The human impact is evident: 30,000 people are reported to have been displaced by recent combat, adding to the 345,000 Malians who have been displaced already over the last year. Across the region, vulnerable communities struggling to host them.

In Burkina Faso, we aim to reach over 290,000 people, including some 77,000 refugees, with water and public health work, food, cash for work activities, animal health and food programs for pastoralist communities, and assistance to refugees from Mali.

Mason was found and cared for as a stray. After calling six microchip providers, we found out his microchip is untraceable. He is sweet, affectionate and good with other cats, dogs and children. He is in good health, and has a handsome glossy black coat which he spends quite some time grooming. Mason has been with us since April 17th, 2010, enjoying the cat condos in the Memory Lane room and watching the world go by through the window. He seems to have no interest in going back outside, so would be a great cat for an apartment or other small home.

The size of the livestock holdings of most families, particularly newcomers who have migrated from urban centers, is well below the subsistence level. February 2009: Ava died suddenly. Upon necropsy, it turned out Ava was actually a boy, significantly underweight and full of cancer. He was a very friendly rooster and will be missed.

Ava is a "peeper", our sanctuary-created term for a broiler, the type of chickens people eat. 9.2 billion Avas are slaughtered each year for consumption.

Broilers are bred to grow and grow fast. They are killed when they are only six weeks old. This fast growth rate causes severe health problems: heart attacks are very common (from obesity) as are bone and pelvic breaks.

You can help the Avas by reducing or eliminating meat from your diet.

CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti – U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers from 418th Civil Affairs Battalion are making a positive impact on the lives of people in East Africa through outreach programs.

The Belton, Missouri-based battalion oversees the work of several U.S. Army Reserve and Navy civil affairs units assigned to Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa.

In Harmakale, Ethiopia, Company D, 478th Civil Affairs Battalion worked with local officials to open an agricultural demonstration project that teaches area residents unique methods for crop irrigation in drought-prone areas. The team is one of two civil affairs units led by Maj. Reginald Kornegay, who also led community outreach efforts in Kitgum, Uganda during Natural Fire 10, a U.S. Army Africa-led humanitarian and disaster relief exercise in October 2009.

“These types of projects receive overwhelming support from local residents,” Kornegay said. “The villagers have begun purchasing supplies on their own to duplicate the nursery stations.”

Several senior officials attended the Feb. 11 project inauguration to include John Yates, the U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, Tom Staal, USAID mission director and Lt. Col. Rich Appel, the 418th commander.

“U.S. Army civil affairs Soldiers fostered a cooperative effort with the local community, which has already made this project a success,” Appel said. “There is now the potential for projects like this in other villages throughout the region.”

In Djibouti, near CJTF-HOA’s headquarters at Camp Lemonier, Soldiers from the 478ths “Team Seminole” recently offered humanitarian assistance supplies to local people, including a water cistern at Balbala, a nearby community in need.

“Fire has destroyed a neighborhood there, to include homes for nine families,” Kornegay said. “A local leader told of their needs, the most vital being a way to collect water.”

Access to drinking water may prevent affected families from forced migration, often a cause of local turbulence, Kornegay said.

Further South, in Eldoret, Kenya, a team of Soldiers from the Danbury, Connecticut-based 411th Civil Affairs Battalion focuses on ways to improve local people’s lives. During a visit to an orphanage, Sgt. 1st Class Victor Fermin recently found a 13-year-old boy with poor hearing. The stop was part of an ongoing effort to conduct medical assessments.

“His hearing loss has affected his education. He has been held back in school,” Fermin said. “We look to local organization and companies in the U.S. to donate hearing aids.”

This event is one of several assessments at local orphanages that the team will do in the next few weeks.

Work on Kenyan primary school was another team project – a low-cost effort that greatly improve education for local children, said Capt. Roxana Pagan. It’s not all work, though. During a recent visit to the Ng'Arua Primary School, Pagan also practiced English skills with Kenyan students.

“This school is one of 10 minimal cost projects begun in the area by a previous civil affairs team,” Pagan said. “Our job is to assess the effectiveness and impact of the previous project and how we can improve upon them in the future

In Moroto, Uganda, two U.S. Army noncommissioned officers are working with the Ugandan People's Defense Force and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization to help animals in the area. Staff Sgt. Danielle Bayar and Staff Sgt. Eric Roth discussed plans for a UPDF-led veterinary clinic in Karamoja region of Northern Uganda. Local animal health workers will lead the effort, Roth said.

“We’ve found that pets and smaller animals who may carry rabies are often overlooked,” Roth said. “There is also a need to treat poultry for Newcastle disease, a virus that can be fatal for birds.”

In Gulu and Amuru, two towns in Northern Uganda, U.S. Army civil affairs Soldiers are assessing a two-year veterinary medicine program that wrapped up in 2009.

The project focused on animal health through vaccinations, training for students from Makerere University in Kampala and sustainable veterinary care for animals in the area. For people living in camps following unrest caused by the Lord's

Resistance Army, animal care was key to them returning to their home villages.

Overall, the team found last year’s effort were successful - treated livestock increased in weight and were producing more milk. Now, a local nongovernmental organization offered grant funding to local veterinarians to open shops to treat livestock.

“Our U.S. Army Soldiers and Navy civil affairs personnel are doing great work across the Horn of Africa, is support of CJTF-HOA and U.S. Africa Command,” Appel said. “These efforts will continue to broaden the reach of U.S. strategic goals toward security, stability and peace for our partner nations and increase the level of prosperity for people throughout East Africa.”

Overall, the team found last year’s effort were successful - treated livestock increased in weight and were producing more milk. Now, a local nongovernmental organization offered grant funding to local veterinarians to open shops to treat livestock.

“Our U.S. Army Soldiers and Navy civil affairs personnel are doing great work across the Horn of Africa, is support of CJTF-HOA and U.S. Africa Command,” Appel said. “These efforts will continue to broaden the reach of U.S. strategic goals toward security, stability and peace for our partner nations and increase the level of prosperity for people throughout East Africa.”

The male peafowl, or peacock, has long been known for and valued for its brilliant tail feathers. The bright spots on it are known as "eyes", and inspired the Greek myth that Hera placed the hundred eyes of her slain giant Argus on the tail of her favorite bird.

Indian Peafowl has iridescent blue-green or green coloured plumage. The so-called "tail" of the peacock, also termed the "train," is not the tail quill feathers but highly elongated upper tail feather coverts. The train feathers have a series of eyes that are best seen when the train is fanned. The actual tail feathers are short and gray-colored and can be seen from behind when a peacock's train is fanned in a courtship display. During the molting season, the males shed their stunning train feathers and reveal the unassuming gray-colored tail which is normally hidden from view beneath the train. Both species have a crest atop the head.

The female (peahen) Indian Peafowl has a mixture of dull green, brown, and grey in her plumage. She lacks the long upper tail feather coverts of the male but has a crest. The female can also display her plumage to ward off female competition or danger to her young.

The Green Peafowl is very different in appearance to the Indian Peafowl. The male has green and gold plumage and has an erect crest. The wings are black with a sheen of blue.

Unlike the Indian Peafowl, the Green Peahen is very similar to the male, only having shorter upper tail feather coverts and slightly less iridescent in some regions. Like other peafowl, it is very difficult to distinguish a juvenile male from an adult female. Moreover, the sexes of the various Green Peafowl species are almost impossible to tell apart in the field during the months when the male has no train.

Many of the brilliant colours of the peacock plumage are due to an optical interference phenomenon (Bragg reflection) based on (nearly) periodic nanostructures found in the barbules (fiber-like components) of the feathers.

Different colours correspond to different length scales of the periodic structures. For brown feathers, a mixture of red and blue is required: one colour is created by the periodic structure, and the other is a created by a Fabry-Perot interference peak from reflections off the outermost and innermost boundaries of the periodic structure.[citation needed]

Such interference-based structural colour is especially important in producing the peacock's iridescent hues (which shimmer and change with viewing angle), since interference effects depend upon the angle of light, unlike chemical pigments.

The plumage of the peacock, and the peahen's preference for its exorbitance, is a classical example of sexual selection and especially the handicap principle. However, in recent years scientific research has shown that the size and brilliance of a male's plumage does not meaningfully correlate with his mating success nor his health, and that instead the key factor for attracting females is the vocalizations made prior to mating.
