ONESTI ZOO

Pictured are two of the five bears currently being kept in captivity at Onesti Zoo, which closed to the public four years ago, because it didn’t meet standards laid down by the European Directive on Zoos. The Zoo is home to five of the last twenty-five bears kept in illegal captive conditions in Romania, (home to Europe’s largest bear population with over 6000 brown bears).

ZARNESTI BEAR SANCTUARY

This week WSPA and local partner AMP opened the final enclosure at the Zarnesti Bear Sanctuary in the Carpathian Mountains. This will mean that the last 25 bears in illegal captivity in Romania can be rescued from private captivity and zoos that don’t meet EU standards and live out the rest of their lives in peace and without fear.

Paws for the Cause Walk for Animal Welfare

On March 18, a peaceful protest took place in uptown Waterloo in support of Paws for the Cause and Bill C-229. Participants and their dogs made their way from Waterloo Park to Town Square and signed either a petition or a 'paw'tition for Bill C-229.
