Pesquet's Parrot (psittrichas fulgidus)
animal species
Description: Vulture-liked head lacking in feathers around eyes; elongated black beak; feathers black across and tail; red feathers on front of wings and belly.

Diet: Specialized on certain species of figs, occasionally soft fruits, nectar and flowers.

Habitat: Occrus in montane forest habitats (New Guinea).

Status and conservation: Pesquet's Parrots are believed to still be common in remote areas, but are rapidly disappearing from forests that are inhabited by humans. They are hunted for their skins that are used as a "bride" price in the highlands. They are also used as a food source.

Did you know... The Pesquet's Parrot is often referred to as the Vulturine Parrot because of its vulture-like look. The bare head and long beak are probably an adaptation to keep the soft fruits that it feeds on from collecting on its feathers. Uncommon in captivity and occuring in remote areas, in the wild, little is known about the Pesquet's behavior or reproduction.

Canberra Zoo
endangered species of animals
Image by Paul D'Ambra - Australia
The National Zoo and Aquarium is privately owned by Canberra businessman Richard Tindale, and is maintained as a predominantly family-run business. The zoo receives no Government or Commonwealth support, and relies on entry fees from the public to continue operations. The zoo also relies on a large number of volunteer recruits to aid in the management of its grounds and the animals residing there.

The Zoo is the only combined zoo and aquarium in Australia. The zoo has both Australian endemic species and introduced species including the largest collection of big cats in Australia, including, until recently, the only tiglon in Australasia. The zoo is also involved in a number of breeding programs for endangered species.

The lion (Panthera leo) is one of four big cats in the genus Panthera, and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, which was about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru.

Lions live for around 10–14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live over 20 years. In the wild, males seldom live longer than ten years as fights with rivals occasionally cause injuries. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although they will scavenge if the opportunity arises. While lions do not typically hunt humans selectively, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey.

The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50 percent over the past two decades in its African range. Lion populations are untenable outside of designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Lions have been kept in menageries since Roman times and have been a key species sought for exhibition in zoos the world over since the late eighteenth century. Zoos are cooperating worldwide in breeding programs for the endangered Asiatic subspecies.

Visually, the male lion is highly distinctive and is easily recognized by its mane. The lion, particularly the face of the male, is one of the most widely recognized animal symbols in human culture. Depictions have existed from the Upper Paleolithic period, with carvings and paintings from the Lascaux and Chauvet Caves, through virtually all ancient and medieval cultures where they historically occurred. It has been extensively depicted in literature, in sculptures, in paintings, on national flags, and in contemporary films and literature.

Sharpshooter Leafhopper: Zyzzogeton quadrimaculata.

Scientists at Amgueddfa Cymru have been photographing as many species of sharpshooter leafhoppers as possible to create identification guides so that farmers will be able to identify the bugs for themselves. To do this we have used new photographic techniques to produce the detailed images you see here.

The Southern White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) is one of the two subspecies of the White Rhinoceros or Square-lipped rhinoceros (the other being the much rarer Northern White Rhino). The White Rhino is one of the five species of rhinoceros that still exist and is one of the few megafaunal species left. It has a wide mouth used for grazing and is the most social of all rhino species. This photo was taken at the Phoenix Zoo on March 12, 2011.

Border Range National Park 19042009 174
animal species
Border Ranges National Park has been included on the World Heritage list as part of the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves (Australia) along with other major rainforest stands in north-east NSW and south-east Queensland. World Heritage properties, places of outstanding value to the world, may be natural wonders or monuments and landscapes of human culture.

The Brown Cuckoo-Dove is a large brown pigeon of rainforests, with a very long, tapering tail. There is a pale streak below the blue-grey eye and a red eye-ring. The female has a brighter chestnut cap and a scaly pattern on the breast. The legs and feet are red. Their flight is strong and graceful, usually low among the trees. This species is also known as the Brown, Pheasant or Large-tailed Pigeon.
Similar species

The large size and graduated tail distinguishes the Brown Cuckoo-Dove from any other pigeon in the region.
Where does it live?
Distribution

The Brown Cuckoo-Dove is found throughout north-eastern and eastern Queensland, including off-shore islands, and eastern coastal areas of New South Wales. Its range is expanding down the coast of New South Wales. This species is also found from the Philippines, south through Borneo to Sumatra, through the Moluccas and Sulawesi to New Guinea.
Habitat

This is a pigeon of rainforests and wet sclerophyll forest, particularly at the forest edges, along creeks and rivers. Brown Cuckoo-Doves are often found in regrowth along roads, in clearings and in weedy areas like lantana.
Seasonal movements

No large-scale seasonal movement, but move locally in search of fruit.
What does it do?
Feeding

Brown Cuckoo-Doves feed on fruit, berries and seeds from a variety of rainforest trees, shrubs and vines. They usually feed in the trees in the early morning and the late afternoon, often hanging upside down to reach fruit. They come to the ground to drink and to eat grit. They can digest very hard seeds.
Breeding

Brown Cuckoo-Doves nest in rainforest trees, shrubs and the tops of vines and ferns, with the nest being a scanty collection of twigs and sticks placed sideways on a branch. The young are covered with long thick down when first hatched. Both parents share the incubation and care of the young.

I found this yellow crab spider in Maconaquah Park in in Miami County, Indiana. He was actually found near a stream, but I moved him into the light so I could get a better photo.

The crab spider family is Thomisidae, but I'm not sure what genus or species this is. Any help would be appreciated. Possible Mecaphesa, based on the following photo (among other reasons): bugguide.net/node/view/548865/bgimage

White Wagtail

Wilhelma zoological and botanical gardens, Stuttgart, Germany

The White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) is a small passerine bird in the wagtail family Motacillidae, which also includes the pipits and longclaws. This species breeds in much of Europe and Asia and parts of north Africa. It is resident in the mildest parts of its range, but otherwise migrates to Africa. It has a toehold in Alaska as a scarce breeder. In some areas, notably Britain and Ireland, the sub-species Pied Wagtail (M. a. yarrellii) predominates.

This is an insectivorous bird of open country, often near habitation and water. It prefers bare areas for feeding, where it can see and pursue its prey. In urban areas it has adapted to foraging on paved areas such as car parks.

It nests in crevices in stone walls and similar natural and man-made structures.

Yellow Rumped Cacique

From Roger Williams Zoo:
In the Tropical America house (where the humidity instantly fogged my glasses and lenses!) this felolow has run of the roost. It's a 2+ story atrium with several two story glass enclosures on the sides. Most of the birds have free run of the atrium along with several smaller primates and the sloth.

This species, Cacicus cela is found from Panama to the southern edges of of the Amazon Rain Forest. They stick to the lowland forest parts and love it hot and humid. They eat fruits and insects. Yes they are related to the American Blackbird. Both are in the family Icteridae.

IUCN Redlist: Least Concern
