This appears to be a eucerine bee; tribe Eucerini, subfamily Apinae, family Apidae. Judging by the unusually long antennae (from which the tribe gets its name), this would be a male. Found in a garden in Burleigh County, North Dakota, on an early August evening. It appeared to be sleeping on the end of a plant with another of its kind that flew away eventually.
If anyone can confirm this bee's identity, and/or identify a genus or species, that would be greatly appreciated.

Just feeling a bit lazy this morning and somehow that's when a floral photo appeals to me. Not my favorite subject for photos because I just never think my florals are all that great. I generally don't like cut flowers because they're not living. Animals, birds, and flowers should be viewed and enjoyed alive. After all, that's when they are most beautiful!

Latin name: Erodium cicutarium
Family: Geraniaceae (Geranium Family)
Medicinal use of Stork's Bill: The whole plant is astringent and haemostatic. It has been used in the treatment of uterine and other bleeding. The root and leaves have been eaten by nursing mothers to increase the flow of milk. Externally, the plant has been used as a wash on animal bites, skin infections etc. A poultice of the chewed root has been applied to sores and rashes. A tea made from the leaves is diaphoretic and diuretic. An infusion has been used in the treatment of typhoid fever. The leaves are soaked in bath water for the treatment of rheumatism. The seeds contain vitamin K, a poultice of them is applied to gouty typhus.

Habitat of the herb: Sandy dunes, grassland, arable land, waste areas, roadsides, railway embankments etc, usually near the sea.
Edible parts of Stork's Bill: Young leaves - raw or cooked as a potherb. Harvested in the spring before the plant flowers, they are tasty and nutritious. The leaves are added to salads, sandwiches, soups etc, they can be used in recipes that call for leaves of beet, plantain, sow thistle or amaranth. Young stems - raw. Root - chewed by children as a gum.
Other uses of the herb: A green dye is obtained from the whole plant. It does not require a mordant. The remnants of the styles are very hygroscopic, they can be used in hygrometers and as weather indicators. The dried plant powder has been mixed with watermelon seeds during storage and planting in order to prevent watermelon disease.
Propagation of Stork's Bill: Seed - sow in situ as soon as the seed is ripe in the late summer. The seed can also be sown in situ in late spring. Germination usually takes place within 3 weeks.
Cultivation of the herb: Sandy dunes, grassland, arable land, waste areas, roadsides, railway embankments etc, usually near the sea.

Medit. region. Ann. to 1.5 ft. Lvs. pinnate, lfts. pinntifid, rachis not toothed between lfts. Peduncles 5-10-fld., bracts united. Fls. purple or pink, 0.2” across. Nat. in N & S Am.. A weedy plant, valuable for forage (Hortus Third 1976: 443). Root was formerly a source of a dye in the Hebrides (Mabberley 1998: 265) In Guatemala 1,500-3,760 m. Eaten by stock, or it would prob. be more common than it is. Well est. on the v. summit of the Volcán de Santa María, just in front of the large cross erected there. It seemed so out of place there, where all the other plants are native alpines, that Standley hesitated to touch the plants in the presence of the Indian guide. This is one of the most important religious shrines of the Quetzaltenango Indians, and one to which weird and cruel rites have been ascribed. However the guide said the plants were of no importance. They were probably intro. casually by some of the many Indians who meet there for purposes known only to themselves (Flora of Guatemala 1946: 369). Young plants gathered, eaten cooked or raw by Blackfeet, Shoshones, Digger Indians. In CA called pin grass, stem is edible (Sturtevant 1972: 256). Through the foothills & lower passes in S CA, as high as 6,000 ft., esp. this & E. texanum. One of the earliest fall plants, appears after the first fall rains. Filaree was a favorite pot herb of the Cahuilla. The best time to gather it was just before it bloomed, Jan.-April. Calistro Tortes said it tasted like spinach. Could be eaten raw, but was usually cooked. Abundant around village sites, where it was readily available to women on their daily food round. One name was tuchily hemu’, ‘humming-bird’s nose’ (Bean & Saubel 1972). Infrequent spreading ann. of flat desert basins. Fls. purple. Seeds of this & E. texanum are stored in quantity by harvester ants of the genus Messor. The husks and spirally coiled beaks are discarded outside the nest crater, forming a broad circular cushion (Jaeger 1941). Naturalized in the Valley of Mexico. Creeping stems. Used for sore throat, inflammations of the mouth. Use a decoction of 60 g plant in 1,500 g water, boiled until reduced to 1 liter. Take 120-150 g three times a day. Ensayo para la Materia Medica Mexicana 1832: Sweetened with ‘miel rosada’ or with any syrup, then used in gargles as a detergent in inflammatory affections of the throat (Martínez 1959: Medicinales, page 34). A v. common plant in the uplands of Chih., esp. in desert meadows. A quelite of Eu. origin. Tarahumar cook the lvs. for several hours, drain & eat. Drink an infusion of the whole plant for sore throat, cough, stomach ache. Lvs. crushed, dampened, placed in the ear for earache. Boil the pink fls., add to water with a little alum to give a yellow dye. Hanks of wool placed in the mixture and the water boiled for several hours, then leave in the dye for a few days, dry in the sun (Pennington 1963). In NM, boiled by Hispanics, drunk as a diuretic. Boiled as a bath for rheumatism. For gonorrhea, make a decoction with Distichlis [Poaceae] and piloncillo [brown sugar], and drink lukewarm twice a day. For urinary disorders make a tea. In SLP, for sore throat boil in water and gargle (Ford 1975). Prostrate spreading stems, forms mats. Young plants in a salad, or cooked as potherbs. An imp. winter & early spring forage for livestock on open range (Kirk 1970). An ornamental pot-plant (Santamaría 1978: Aguja de pastor). Valid species (GRIN 2006)

Eooxylides tharis distanti. Quite a pretty find that we usually see flitting fast from one shrub to another inside forests such as the nature reserves here in Singapore. I was lucky enough to spot this resting on a branch of a small plant along a trail in Venus Drive. This butterfly is notoriously difficult to get a picture of as it readily flies out at the slightest disturbance that it detects. They have reddish-orange underside with with black spots on its hindwings (white area). They have that prominent white long tails.

Loved how this young fawn's camoflage worked so well amoung the blueberry shrubs and plants of Big Meadows. Shot at ISO 800 - the grainy texture adds to the artful look of this photo (imho). The slight contrast and color enhancements done in post-processing made the fawn easier to spot than in real life.

Sumac (also spelled sumach) is any one of approximately 250 species of flowering plants in the genus Rhus and related genera, in the family Anacardiaceae. The dried berries of some species are ground to produce a tangy purple spice often used in juice.
Sumacs grow in subtropical and warm temperate regions throughout the world, especially in North America.
Sumacs are shrubs and small trees that can reach a height of 1-10 meters. The leaves are spirally arranged; they are usually pinnately compound, though some species have trifoliate or simple leaves. The flowers are in dense panicles or spikes 5-30 cm long, each flower very small, greenish, creamy white or red, with five petals. The fruits form dense clusters of reddish drupes called sumac bobs.
Sumacs propagate both by seed (spread by birds and other animals through their droppings), and by new sprouts from rhizomes, forming large clonal colonies.
The drupes of the genus Rhus are ground into a deep-red or purple powder used as a spice in Middle Eastern cuisine to add a lemony taste to salads or meat; in the Turkish cuisine e.g. added to salad-servings of kebabs and lahmacun. In North America, the smooth sumac (Rhus glabra), and the staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina), are sometimes used to make a beverage, termed "sumac-ade" or "Indian lemonade" or "rhus juice". This drink is made by soaking the drupes in cool water, rubbing them to extract the essence, straining the liquid through a cotton cloth and sweetening it. Native Americans also used the leaves and berries of the smooth and staghorn sumacs combined with tobacco in traditional smoking mixtures.
Species including the fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica), the littleleaf sumac (R. microphylla), the skunkbush sumac (R. trilobata), the smooth sumac and the staghorn sumac are grown for ornament, either as the wild types or as cultivars.
The leaves of certain sumacs yield tannin (mostly pyrogallol), a substance used in vegetable tanning. Leather tanned with sumac is flexible, light in weight, and light in color, even bordering on being white.
Dried sumac wood is fluorescent under long-wave UV light. Mowing of sumac is not a good control measure as the wood is springy resulting in jagged, sharp pointed stumps when mowed. The plant will quickly recover with new growth after mowing. See Nebraska Extension Service publication G97-1319 for suggestions as to control.
At times Rhus has held over 250 species. Recent molecular phylogeny research suggests breaking Rhus sensu lata into Actinocheita, Baronia, Cotinus, Malosma, Searsia, Toxicodendron, and Rhus sensu stricta. If this is done, about 35 species would remain in Rhus. However, the data is not yet clear enough to settle the proper placement of all species into these genera.

Green lacewings are insects in the large family Chrysopidae of the order Neuroptera. There about 85 genera and (differing between sources) 1,300-2,000 species in this widespread group. Members of the genera Chrysopa and Chrysoperla are very common in North America and Europe; they are very similar and many of their species have been moved from one genus to the other times and again, and in the non-scientific literature assignment to Chrysopa and Chrysoperla can rarely be relied upon. Since they are the most familiar neuropterids to many people, they are often simply called "lacewings". But actually most of the diversity of Neuroptera are properly referred to as some sort of "lacewing", so common lacewings is preferable.
Green lacewings are delicate insects with a wingspan of 6 to over 65 mm, though the largest forms are tropical. They are characterized by a wide costal field in their wing venation, in which the cross-veins are. The bodies are usually bright green to greenish-brown, and the compound eyes are conspicuously golden in many species. The wings are usually translucent with a slight iridescence; some have green wing veins or a cloudy brownish wing pattern. The vernacular name "stinkflies", used chiefly for Chrysopa species but also for others (e.g. Cunctochrysa) refers to their ability to release a vile smell from paired prothoracal glands when handled.
While depending on species and environmental conditions, some green lacewings will eat only about 150 prey items in their entire life, in other cases 100 aphids will be eaten in a single week. Thus, in several countries, millions of such voracious Chrysopidae are reared for sale as biological control agents of insect and mite pests in agriculture and gardens. They are distributed as eggs, since as noted above they are highly aggressive and cannibalistic in confined quarters; the eggs hatch in the field. Their performance is variable; thus, there is a lot of interest in further research to improve the use of green lacewings as biological pest control.
Gardeners can attract lacewings, and therefore their larvae, to gardens by using companion plants. They are attracted by angelica, dill, coreopsis, cosmos, sunflowers, and the beneficial weed, dandelion.

Los crisópidos (Chrysopidae) son una familia de insectos del orden Neuroptera; reciben los nombres comunes de crisopas, crisopas verdes, crisopas de alas verdes, ojos dorados, león de áfidos, alas de encaje y moscas hediondas, entre otros.
Los adultos son de cuerpo verde a pardo pálido, su venación alar contrasta en sus dos pares de alas transparentes, y sus ojos son dorados o amarillos cobrizos.
Esta familia es cosmopolita, sus miembros habitan especialmente en zonas de gran vegetación y agrícolas. Sus larvas son depredadores de otros artrópodos de cuerpo blando y son también caníbales, y unos pocos adultos son depredadores, como Chrysopa. La mayoría se alimenta de secreciones proteínicas.
Los adultos con aparato bucal masticador, antenas filiformes multisegmentadas, poseen alas con abundante venación, de forma primitiva, en ocasiones las emplean para emitir sonidos, y casi todas las especies poseen allí un órgano timpánico, carente en la primitiva subfamilia Nothochrysinae, que sirve para evadir a los murciélagos. Las patas son marchadoras. El abdomen es largo y carece de cercos. Especies del género Meleoma, poseen órganos productores de chirridos. Como medio defensivo producen una sustancia lacrimógena anal cuando huyen de un ataque.
El cortejo de los crisópidos es complejo y ritual, producen vibraciones de gran complejidad que únicamente son reconocidas por miembros de la misma especie. Unas pocas especies producen olores durante el cortejo. Tanto los machos como las hembras realizan varias cópulas, las hembras aproximadamente cada 28 días, los machos dos seguidas cada 5 días como promedio. En la cópula realizan diferentes posturas y es relativamente larga. La longevidad está relacionada con el tipo de alimentación durante el período larval, y la capacidad de oviposición y cantidad de huevos con la misma pero durante el periodo adulto.
Por ser en su mayoría depredadores generalistas, algunos crisópidos han sido utilizados para programas de control de plagas; el género que más estudio ha tenido ha sido la cosmopolita Chrysoperla y otras en menor grado, especialmente representantes de la subfamilia Chrysopinae.
Para la producción masiva se utilizan huevos de Sitotroga cerealella, y larvas de Phthorimea operculella, o sea dietas naturales, las dietas artificiales aunque más económicas no han tenido éxito. Los módulos de producción logran producir hasta 2.000.000 de huevos diarios, pueden ser automáticos o semimanuales; lo que eleva más los costes es el evitar el canibalismo, hay que usar sustratos, diseños especiales y liberaciones oportunas.
Ya aplicadas en campo pueden ser para trabajos inoculativos (introducción), incrementativos (elevar la población local) o inundativos. Los adultos pueden sobrevivir y reproducirse rociando melazas enriquecidas para su alimentación.
En manejo de control de plagas han controlado con éxito ácaros, áfidos, larvas de lepidópteros, heminópteros fitófagos, por ello son de gran interés para la Entomología Económica en la agricultura.

The evolution of the garden, the protective clothing and the safety provisions involved in the installation form an essential and necessary part of the artwork.

The garden installation EXOTE shapes a spatial environment for the characters of Kris Verdonck’s Kafka-esque world. This end-of-the-world landscape houses a selection of the most invasive alien species (plants and animals) in Belgium, which constitute a genuine threat to biodiversity, the economy and public health. Due to man’s interference, the species have been brought out of their natural environment and now form a threat for other, native species. EXOTE stands as a metaphor for a world in which man is increasingly forced to protect himself from an environment that he himself has created.
As certain non-native species in the installation present a potential threat to biodiversity in Hasselt and the surrounding areas, visitors need to be aware that even the smallest seed or animal cannot be allowed to escape. "The Phasmatodea (sometimes called Phasmida) are an order of insects, whose members are variously known as stick insects (in Europe and Australasia), walking sticks or stick-bugs (in the United States), phasmids, ghost insects and leaf insects (generally the family Phylliidae). The ordinal name is derived from the Greek "phasma" meaning an apparition or phantom, and refers to the resemblance of many species to sticks or leaves. Their natural camouflage can make them extremely difficult to spot.
Phasmids are herbivorous, feeding mostly on the leaves of trees and shrubs. The females, which are usually significantly larger than the males, lay their eggs individually, either sticking them to vegetation or simply depositing them on the ground. A single female may lay from 100 to 1,200 eggs after mating, depending on species. The eggs are typically camouflaged, resembling plant seeds, and may remain dormant for a full season or more before hatching. The nymphs are born already closely resembling the adults."
