A Crocodile Monitor, from Australia. It's not a crocodile, but it is a monitor. I guess they're just a little mixed up down there in Australia. Scale is hard to tell in the picture, but he was probably around six feet from tip to tail. Of course, it's a damn long tail.

Also, that's a real tree behind it. The bark peels off naturally and reveals stripes of several different colors. It looks really, really neat. Must be the dazzling colors that confused the Aussies about crocodiles.

Crystal

This is Crystal, one of the two gray wolves (Canis lupus) new to the zoo from Canada. Why is she white? Well, the zookeepers think her mom mated with an Arctic wolf (also Canis lupus but has a white coat to better blend in to its surroundings) and Crystal picked up dad's coloring.

Both she and Coby (not picture) were hand-raised by humans. They are still getting used to their environment and were constantly on the move while we were there, except for a few moments when Crystal stopped to check things out.

If you ever go to Bogota you must not miss the Botero Museum. This museum, which is free, features a large collection of Botero's paintings and sculptures plus dozens of other works by 20th Century artists including Picasso, Miro, Chagall, etc. Visiting this museum was a remarkable experience.

February 7, 2008 marks the start of the Year of the Rat on the Lunar Calendar. It's a morbid picture, but to see his eyes makes this an intriguing picture to me. I wondered if he enjoyed his last meal. I was going to my pictures folder and found this picture which I took a couple of months ago. The story behind this little guy is that he terrorized the girls (to my enjoyment) at my office for a few weeks so they put out some traps. It wasn't necessary because we were moving out of the office anyways a few weeks later.

This photo was taken at Courtright Reservoir, in Eastern Fresno County, California.
