Cackle and Drag
about animals
I was going to add a very pretty Ted Hughes poem (one that's not about animals believe it or not) but decided against it. I hate that poem anyways. I could honestly keep typing away right now until I crash and fall asleep right here. I might actually. The title is from a Plath poem (ohhh so ironic Taylor, sooo funny) called Edge. I might memorize that one for my English project.

I've been really sick this week. I've missed two days of school and will probably miss tomorrow as well.

I also donated blood last week. It was on my bucket list and I'm really happy I did it. However I passed out and spent an hour recovering. I'll post a picture of it in the comments. I love needles so much to it's really weird that I passed out. But I'm anemic and was only about five pounds over the weight post so yeah. I spent that day vomiting and what not. I could literally keep typing words and never stop right now I'm on so much NyQuil it probably doesn't even matter.

Um yeah don't you love another black and white picture? That's literally what I do when I don't know how to make the picture better. But yeah I need to stop saying "but yeah." I like this picture a lot. It's from a very long time ago and I looked very different. I was going to edit my back so it didn't look so gross but I'm happy I didn't. But my mom might make me take this picture down.

Please tell me you're not still reading this. Seriously, tell me you have something better to do than read a bunch of babble by a seventeen year old girl fearing her eighteenth birthday that is quickly approaching in less than three weeks. I'm literally wasting internet space by still being alive and awake and pressing buttons on this machine.

I should just backspace this crap and post no description. I'm not rereading any of this so sorry if there's missing words or what not. I often like to put in "my" where "by" belongs and I have no idea why. Does anyone else do that a lot? I think just because they sound a bit similar and I'm too absent minded to notice.

Can we just call this like an "update post"? I think that would fit considering the absolute crap of this description.

I'm still going to type things.

Feel free to tell me this is not my blog or personal journal and I need to shut up and leave and take this picture off of private. I might not. I should probably wait until tomorrow morning to post this when I'm feeling less ridiculous and stuff and I don't think that last sentence made any sense.

I really want to start playing piano again. It's such a beautiful instrument and CRAP I FORGOT TO POST THAT LAST PICTURE OF RYAN. I can't do anything right. I'll post that next week. Maybe with a super deep description taken from an Anne Sexton poem or Lady Gaga lyric. Just kidding I'm not a fan of Lady Gaga to be honest. She's very good at starting trends of not being afraid to walk out in public with your fishnets on upside down. And by upside down I mean on your face. I'd like to believe I have a somewhat intelligent idea of fashion seeing as I dedicate a large portion of my life studying it, and covering your face in fishnets would make for a great photograph but not to a red carpet event. Gotta love her courage. But no I don't like her.

That was rude wasn't it?

I'm going back to England in March. I could cry over how happy I am. That place started my photography life and I will always miss the opportunity I would have had to study there for a couple years.

But hey, if I would have stayed there I would have never met this one little boy who I've been dating for exactly a year today. Isn't that amazing, I can keep a stable relationship for longer than two seconds! I love that boy, he's such a sweetheart.

I was really going to end this about thirteen paragraphs ago. Would you believe me if I told you I was actually a decent writer and I didn't normally write in these annoying short and stupid sentences?

Anyways, I really appreciate you if you read this and I apologize for writing all that crap. It's 1:24 in the morning and I should have never started writing this and should have just stuck in that "Bride and Groom Lie Hidden for Three Days" poem that pisses me off here. Go read it though, it's actually pretty nice. Although it's such a bull piece of writing. I almost said something really rude about Mr. Hughes but you're not allowed to say anything rude about dead people as I found out recently. In all due respect I genuinely thought something was going down with the Bobbi Brown makeup artist, not the significant other of the late Whitney Houston. My bad.

Oh and I think I'm going to get my cosmetology licence while I'm in college. I mean, it's almost impossible to imagine me going through life without one. And my nails look so badass right now. I'll post another webcam picture in the comments. Lols.

I'm seriously leaving now.

Kay bye.

I love you.

AF927 Sea Dragon
about animals
Baltimore Aquarium. December 2001. Fascinating to watch - they gently tumble about but will suddenly implosively suck in any brine shrimp that drift too close to the snout.

Wikipedia: Leafy sea dragon:
"The leafy sea dragon, Phycodurus eques, is a marine fish related to the seahorse. It is the only member of the genus Phycodurus. These creatures are found around southern and western Australia and generally remain in shallow, temperate waters. Their name comes from their appearance, with long leaf-like protrusions coming from all over the body. These protrusions are not used for propulsion; they serve only as camouflage. The leafy sea dragon propels itself by means of a pectoral fin on the ridge of its neck and a dorsal fin on its back closer to the tail end. These small fins are almost completely transparent and difficult to see as they undulate minutely to move the creature sedately through the water, completing the illusion of floating seaweed."

Spring is really here, I found my first ladybugs this year.

What I find very interesting on this one, is that you can easily see how shallow the DOF of a macro is (about half the size of the ladybug). Considering it's f/4.5 of a 60mm lens the DOF is only a few mm deep, this can be best seen looking at the wood, which shows how fast the picture moves from sharp to unsharp. This shallow DOF is the biggest problems in such shots, even worse if you don't have a tripod at hand for a shot. It's a good thing that the lens has an image stabilizer, but this doesn't help against moving the subject out of focus.

And here is another shot of the sam ladybug.

Mom .... Willie took my teat again!

Charlotte's Web treats teats to another 15 minutes.

These insights into the teat situation come from notes accompanying an animated script of Charlotte's Web that was never made. Original source from Gene Deitch:
genedeitch.awn.com/index.php3?ltype=chapter&chapter=28

NORTH BROOKLIN, MAINE
December 20, 1970

Dear Gene:

This morning I unearthed a script I began, years back, when it seemed as though CHARLOTTE'S WEB was going to be filmed live. I remember when you were here your saying that perhaps a good way to start the film would be with the birth of Wilbur in the hoghouse. That's the way this thing starts, so I'll send it along with this letter, on the chance that there might be something in it that proves useful.

If you do start with the birth of Wilbur, I can give you a quick rundown of what actually happens at a farrowing– I've been there. The sow (enormous) lies on her side. She does not thrash about. The farmer sits nearby. As each tiny pig arrives, he picks it up and puts it in a box, for warmth. He ends up with a boxful of pigs. They are practically noiseless at this stage. After the sow has passed the afterbirth, she is still on her side. Sows have two rows of teats, usually ten in all---five and five. This means that when she is on her side there is an upper level and a lower level. She sometimes has to hitch herself over more onto her back in order to expose the lower level for the convenience of her children. When she is ready to feed the young ones, she utters short grunts in a low-pitched voice. The little pigs get the message, and the farmer ladles them out of the box. They instinctively stay together and line up like a squad of miniature soldiers. The corporal pays a visit to his mother's nose, where he delivers a short speech of encouragement, emphasizing the beauty of breasts and of milk. Then he returns to the squad, and pretty soon there is an assault on the mother, the young pigs rooting busily at her breasts as though they were digging for truffles. No milk as yet. Then the pigs start milling about, each seeking an advantageous position and the Teat Supreme. The forward teats on a sow are more productive than the hind ones---hence that old American phrase, "suck hind tit." After a while, with the sow still emitting her come-on grunts, the pigs settle into a formation, each, pig with his mouth around a faucet, the pigs of the upper level literally on top of the pigs of the lower level. A novice, viewing this happy scene, might suppose that the nursing has begun and that the pigs are getting nourished. Not so. But all of a sudden, as though a switch had been thrown, the milk starts to flow and the pigs sag back on their haunches and receive the gift of life.

"13 on 14" --

Growth of Nursing Pigs and Characteristics of Nursed Mammary Gland According to the Anatomical Location

Within hours after birth, pigs start to nurse the sow and teat order is quickly established. Sight, smell, and recognition of neighbors are factors which influence the identification of teats by new born pigs. Teat order helps to reduce the fighting frequency among littermates and it is reported that teat order at the middle position is more slowly established. Teat order is usually relatively stable. It is believed that heavier or dominant pigs usually nurse anterior mammary glands, which generally leaves the small or subordinate pigs to nurse the posterior glands. The variation in weight at weaning is primarily believed to be a result of differences in milk production by each mammary gland. Weight variations within a litter can result in greater complexity of management of pig movement through consecutive phases of production by delaying weaning or marketing.

It has been suggested that the anterior mammary glands may be larger, produce more milk, or provide a more comfortable nursing position for pigs, whereas others have suggested that there is no difference in milk production among glands. The true advantages for pigs nursing anterior mammary glands remains uncertain. The objectives of this study were to show how growth of nursing pigs is influenced by the characteristics of nursed mammary glands, and how this effect is may vary according to anatomical location of the glands.
