What a magnificent bird. The largest raptor in the world. The scientific name, Pithecophaga jefferyi, means Jefferey's monkey-eater. No joke. The bird stands about half a meter. It is threatened by illegal hunting and habitat destruction. I saw a few individuals at the Philppine Eagle center in Davao, Mindanao, which does a great job in the conservation and captive breeding of this animal.

The Fig Restaurant

Figs (Ficus sp. - Moraceae) are valuable keystone species in the rainforest. A mass fig flowering from just a single tree will attract various different wildlife species to it. Figs act as an important 'restaurant' for the animals and in return, the figs allow their seeds to be spread about and be germinated by these animals to other areas and stratas of the rainforest. The orang utans are one of the most likelier species to be seen during a fig flowering.
