Army carrier pigeons bathing, France, during World War I. This image shows a group of pigeons enjoying a bath in a tin tray full of water. Carrier pigeons were widely used by both sides in World War I. Their use for carrying messages has been recorded back to the ancient Greeks. More recently, Iraqi forces used them in the Gulf War.
Birds need to have access to water to clean their feathers so that they are able to fly.
