Bathing time

Some cool images of animals images:

Bathing time
images of animals
Image by National Library of Scotland
Army carrier pigeons bathing, France, during World War I. This image shows a group of pigeons enjoying a bath in a tin tray full of water. Carrier pigeons were widely used by both sides in World War I. Their use for carrying messages has been recorded back to the ancient Greeks. More recently, Iraqi forces used them in the Gulf War.

Birds need to have access to water to clean their feathers so that they are able to fly.

Animal Farm artwork

Image by The National Archives UK
Description: Preliminary drawing for design of Animal Farm strip cartoon.

In 1950 the Foreign Office commissioned a strip cartoon version of Animal Farm from the cartoonist Norman Pett and his writing partner Donald Freeman. Various embassies then encouraged overseas newspapers to publish the anti-communist strip. It was translated into a number of languages and also turned into a slide show for public performance.

In contrast to small wonders are large wonders. The tigers were very playful yesterday and with a 300mm lens I could really throw the fence out of focus. Had I taken this image a fraction of a second later I would have had full eye contact, should have been in burst mode.

One of the true wonders of the world, the Giant Swallowtail here posed for me at the Woodland Park Zoo. Must say, there have been very few times when something live I photographed actually sat still long enough to do the portrait justice.

I think this one time was close to perfect...

I like talking to the animals. Better watch out for the lions though!

Green Trail 3.7km
Discover one of London's most famous green spaces, the beautiful Regent's Park.

27 July - 9 September
Take a stroll along some of London’s most scenic streets with our free Discovery Trails. We’ve put together six unique colour-coded walking routes across the historic city centre that will take you on a journey of discovery to the greatest sights and sounds of London. Keep an eye out for official Games mascots Mandeville and Wenlock, who’ll be bringing the trails to life and highlighting some great photo opportunities. Each will be individually designed, animating the routes in a unique way that captures the spirit of London. Why not try all of the trails and see if you can get a snapshot on camera?
The 84 official Wenlock and Mandeville sculptures will be in place for two months from mid July to the end of the Paralympics and are part of the Mayor of London Presents programs of free cultural events and attractions being staged across the capital to celebrate the Games.
Mounted on concrete plinths, each fibreglass figure will be 2.3 metres high and weigh one tonne. They have been decorated by 22 designers to reflect their surroundings.
The £490,000 scheme is being promoted by Mayor Boris Johnson, who has overseen similar public art events, including life-sized baby elephants and Fabergé eggs mounted on plinths around the capital.

3 of 3 Two Alpha male Northern Elephant Seals engage in battle just as the sun sets, taking their fight into the Pacific Ocean (three images in this sequence).

Northern Elephant Seals (M. angustirostris) at Piedras Blancas, San Simeon, CA 12 Jan 2012, taken in late light, a few minutes before sunset. At Piedras Blancas light is everything. I shot hundreds of images all day long starting at noon, and the only six keepers (taken at the main south viewing area) were taken in the last 20 minutes before the sun set below the horizon. I saw dozens of new borns, a few births, lots of early attempts at mating, and a few Alpha male bull battles, not all that violent and bloody, in for dominance and defense of harems. The beach was crowded with a mass of elephant seals, a must-see exhibition.

Taken on a long ago day. Previously, I hosted this image on my personal website (Coffeebear.net) but I've decided to outsource my image hosting to Flickr as I enjoy the community on this site so much.

This was also one of my earliest experiments with GIMP to alter the image trying to improve the colors & contrast.

This picture was taken and edited to look as such shortly after we got Capt. Jack and while he was still learning where it was appropriate to releave himself.

I (Mike Baird) found and reported this otter at 5:25 pm 24 June 2010. I pulled it from a rising tide at the waters edge to the highest adjacent point using a mutt mitt bag, and tagged the subject for Mike Harris’ attention. I left a message for him at 805.772.1135, emailed the first three images with GPS coordinates to him and to Flickr, and moments later Mike Harris responded and was on the scene. These graphic images document the on site necropsy process, and, as can be seen, a bullet (lead pellet?) was found in the skull of the baby otter and recent blood trauma was found around the wound under the skin and on the skull. By request, these graphic images and videos were not immediately published in public view here on Flickr, pending permission by Fish and Game, as they wanted to address how to best handle publication of such crime scene information to optimize their ability to prosecute this crime.

Dept of Fish and Game, OSPR-Veterinary Services, 1385 Main Street, Morro Bay, CA 93442, 805.772.1135 office; 831.212.7090 cell; mikeharris [at} ospr.dfg.ca d o t gov.

Our little department at work has made every other Friday, a Special Guest Day, where we each bring in someone or something from home and show it to the rest of us with pride. In addition to the show and tell, the special guests partake in a little photo shoot.

Now the question is, which one is my special guest?

Subject: "I see you" image of an untimely male Rose-breasted Grosbeak just hanging out in a Willow Tree next to porch in Talking Rock, Georgia

Project: Backyard Pishing; Private Residence, Talking Rock, Pickens County, North Georgia, USA
Date: 2012.04.22 (Brisk, very windy Spring day; temps were probably ~60 degrees but had windchill factor)
Camera: Kodak Z740 Zoom

Have said before these guys started showing up somewhere around 2008, 2009. JUST happened to look out the window in time to catch five males eating sunflower seeds on the front walkway. At the time I didn't know what they were and actually only saw all five backsides. Had no clue that year of the phenomenal red coloring on their chests.

The Rose-breasted Grosbeak male (Pheucticus ludovicianus, alpha banding code RBGR) one picture here apparently has been in the yard a good solid week. I kept seeing flashes of a white rump with more white under the tail as he was exiting Stage Left when I'd poke my head out the window to check on bird feeders. Have seen two now (two days ago). This is THE ABSOLUTE lateness and longest repeated sightings in Spring they've been in my Pickens County yard yet. Every year the pishing gets better and better out there..! :))

Tanuki statues
images of animals
In front of a house, in Nara, Japan.

From Wikipedia :

Statues of tanuki can be found outside many Japanese temples and restaurants, especially noodle shops. These statues often wear big, cone-shaped hats and carry bottles of sake in one hand, and a promissory note (a bill it will never pay) or empty purse in the other hand. Tanuki statues always have large bellies. Older depictions of the tanuki show them as having large testicles as well, although this feature is often omitted in contemporary sculpture.

The comical image of the tanuki is thought to have developed during the Kamakura era. The actual wild tanuki has unusually large testicles, a feature that has inspired humorous exaggeration in artistic depictions of the creature. Tanuki may be shown with their testicles flung over their backs like travellers' packs, or using them as drums. As tanuki are also typically depicted as having large bellies, they may be depicted as drumming on their bellies instead of their testicles -- particularly in contemporary art.

A common schoolyard song in Japan (the tune of which can be heard in the arcade game Ponpoko and a variation of which is sung in the Studio Ghibli film Pom Poko) makes explicit reference to the tanuki's anatomy:

Tan Tan Tanuki no kintama wa,
Kaze mo nai no ni,
Bura bura

Roughly translated, this means "Tan-tan-tanuki's/Raccoon-raccoon-raccoon dog's testicles, there isn't even any wind but still go swing-swing-swing". It then proceeds to continue for several verses, with many regional variations. It is sung to the melody of an American Baptist hymn called "Shall We Gather At The River?".

During the Kamakura and Muromachi eras, some stories began to include more sinister tanuki. The Otogizoshi story of "Kachi-kachi Yama" features a tanuki that clubs an old lady to death and serves her to her unknowing husband as "old lady soup", an ironic twist on the folkloric recipe known as "tanuki soup". Other stories report tanuki as being harmless and productive members of society. Several shrines have stories of past priests who were tanuki in disguise. Shapeshifting tanuki are sometimes believed to be tsukumogami, a transformation of the souls of household goods that were used for one hundred years or more.

A popular tale known as Bunbuku chagama is about a tanuki who fooled a monk by transforming into a tea-kettle. Another is about a tanuki who tricked a hunter by disguising his arms as tree boughs, until he spread both arms at the same time and fell off the tree. Tanuki are said to cheat merchants with leaves they have magically disguised as paper money. Some stories describe tanuki as using leaves as part of their own shape-shifting magic.

In metalworking, tanuki skins were often used for thinning gold. As a result, tanuki became associated with precious metals and metalwork. Small tanuki statues were marketed as front yard decoration and good luck charm for bringing in prosperity. Also, this is why tanuki is described as having large kintama (金玉 lit. gold ball, means a testicle in Japanese slang).
