Crystal

This is Crystal, one of the two gray wolves (Canis lupus) new to the zoo from Canada. Why is she white? Well, the zookeepers think her mom mated with an Arctic wolf (also Canis lupus but has a white coat to better blend in to its surroundings) and Crystal picked up dad's coloring.

Both she and Coby (not picture) were hand-raised by humans. They are still getting used to their environment and were constantly on the move while we were there, except for a few moments when Crystal stopped to check things out.

If you ever go to Bogota you must not miss the Botero Museum. This museum, which is free, features a large collection of Botero's paintings and sculptures plus dozens of other works by 20th Century artists including Picasso, Miro, Chagall, etc. Visiting this museum was a remarkable experience.

Fernando Botero Angulo (born April 19, 1932) is a Colombian figurative artist. His works feature a figurative style, called by some "Boterismo", which gives them an unmistakable identity. Botero depicts women, men, daily life, historical events and characters, milestones of art, still-life, animals and the natural world in general, with exaggerated and disproportionate volumetry, accompanied by fine details of scathing criticism, irony, humor, and ingenuity.

I'm especially happy with this picture because of the rolled up tongue. I think this is a Heliconian (or Longwing), but I'm not really sure.

B-24 Liberator Wazzle Dazzle with Co-Pilot James Beadling, , Crew 108

The "Wazzle Dazzle" was a mythical bird from the pacific ocean that flew from island to island. The name was inspired by the wife of pilot William Whetsell who told the stroy of the "Wazzle Dazzle" and at the time was expecting a baby; as was crew chief Paul Davis's wife. The co-pilot James Beadling lobbied for a nose art drawing based on another mythical animal called "Nitsie" (spelling ?). The pilot of the B-24 placed the nose art of the "Wazzle Dazzle" on his side of the B-24 and the Co-pilot place the nose art of the "Nitsie" on his side. Thus this B-24 had two different nose arts; one on each side of the plane.

"Our Pilot's wife told the crew a story at dinner the first time our crew came together at Lemour, CA. She told of a stork that lived on an island in the Pacific which was surrounded by 100 other islands which contained a female stork on each of them. Each morning the stork would fly fast and happily to each of the 100 islands saying "Wazzle Dazzle". At eventide he could barely fly home saying W-a-z-z-l-e D-a-z-z-le very slowly. Wazzle Dazzle is bird language of course; do you know what it is in English? WOW!!! Do I love that stuff.

We immediately adopted Wazzle Dazzle as our nose art. We paid a "permanent party" GI two quarts of Irish Whiskey to paint it on our plane in England. Lt Taylor"

This is another picture from one of those taken inside my favorite kaleidoscope. You can probably find the original pretty easily. The bright against the burnt orange is very attractive to me.

Hertfordshire GOC's 13 October 2012 walk, starting and ending at Tring railway station and following the Grand Union Canal around Tring Reservoirs. I used a setting on my camera that I don't normally use in the hope the pictures would be better, but I think the quality is down on my usual so I won't be using that setting again!

I took lots of photos on this walk so please check out the other photos in the set!

Cute picture of Clint, Carolyn, and Samhain together. Clint's head injury has had a few minutes/hours to heal and stop bleeding.

The title is a reference to Clint parodying lyrics of The Ramones and saying "We're a happy family, we're a happy family, we're a happy family, me & Carolyn & Samhain."

Which, if you know the song and sing along, you would realize has way too many syllables to match up. The awkwardness of saying "Carolyn & Samhain" in the time it normally takes to say "mom & dad" was part of our humor.

No, it doesn't translate well to picture captions.

Those chairs used to have arms? Throw too many parties, break too much furniture, and you start to forget details like that. I think there's one left over, and it's outside and rotted away, haha.

This photo was taken at Courtright Reservoir, in Eastern Fresno County, California.
In this photo, he was getting some sun, on the warm rocks.

I feel I timed this picture to near perfection! We see the crisps leaving the mans hand, and the pigeons fighting for the best food, with one pigeon in mid flight. Lovely stuff.

The nocturama is the place there where it's dark the day and has light during the night, so that one can observe the night active animals. Normally it's not possible to take photos. I still could take a picture of a female ocelot with f/1.4 and 10000 ISO!
