Diergaarde Blijdorp (Official Dutch name: Stichting Koninklijke Rotterdamse Diergaarde, Foundation Royal Zoo of Rotterdam) is a zoo in the northwestern part of Rotterdam, one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands. In 2007 it celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Diergaarde Blijdorp is a member of the Dutch Zoo Federation (NVD) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).


History





Giraffes and monumental building
The original Rotterdam Zoo was lost in the bombing of Rotterdam in World War II, which destroyed most of the city centre. Some streetnames, such as Diergaardesingel (Zoolane), still recall the old zoo. Blijdorp was rebuilt slightly to the north, where it opened to the public in its current location on December 7, 1940. The new zoo was designed by Dutch architect Sybold van Ravesteyn, who designed the central railway station in Rotterdam, as well. In 2001, 'Blijdorp' became almost twice as large when it opened a new western part, called Oceanium, with its main attraction an aquarium. In 2007, the zoo was declared a rijksmonument.[3]

In May 2007 the zoo appeared in the news when Bokito, Blijdorp's silverback gorilla, escaped from his enclosure and seriously injured a female visitor. Before the attack, the woman was a regular visitor of the zoo (on average 4 times per week) and claimed to have a special bond with Bokito, regularly touching the glass between her and the gorilla, making eye contact and smiling to him.[4]

In October 2010, the city of Rotterdam decided to reduce its yearly funding of Blijdorp from nearly 4.5 to about 0.8 million Euro until 2015.[5] The zoo and its supporters protested the decision, claiming it is unclear if the zoo can continue to operate with the reduced budget.[6]

The summer of 2003 was our first in Florida, but the heat and humidity were not so brutal as I had expected. We had greenery rather than heat islands. We learned to make sweat our friend.

We had come down in March. When our rental van had pulled up the driveway I marveled at a hedge garlanded with deep pink azalea blossoms. I had visited the house when my parents were still alive, but the season had been wrong each time and I had never noticed anything but holly.

Now I noticed holly and more. Seeds dropped over the years by visiting birds had caused trees to sprout within the hedge. For much of the year those trees poked through its trimmed exterior, straining to break free. They made me think of Daphne, the nymph transformed into a laurel so that she might escape Apollo's advances. With a sigh I wielded the hedge trimmer, kept the trees subdued. Until the nest.

Mary had noticed it first, or perhaps the cats did. We heard cheeps. We saw, close up, the mockingbird parents tend their young, soaring to and from a territory we only presumed to be ours. We kept the cats inside, much to their chagrin.

I promised I wouldn't trim the hedge until after the chicks had fledged. If anyone complained we'd point out that mockingbirds are protected here. But no one objected, and the trees grew. I waited until the cheeps stopped and we were sure the nest had emptied before I resumed that part of my yard work. Reluctantly.

We don't know who built the nest that remains. Other birds have explored the hedge since the summer of '03 -- sparrows, cardinals -- though we haven't heard the piping of young.

Mary tells me, "Don't trim the hedge too closely near there. Let it grow."

Breeding programs





A Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens fulgens) in Diergaarde Blijdorp. Blijdorp coordinates the international breeding program for this species.
Diergaarde Blijdorp participates in about 70 breeding programs and studbooks, and coordinates a couple of them, including the international breeding program for Red Pandas, EEPs for Asian Elephant, Komodo Dragon, Red-crowned and Siberian Crane, Visayan Warty Pig and Egyptian Tortoise, and the ESB for the Crowned Pigeons.[7]

Blijdorp also houses a botanical garden and manages both the Dutch National Bromelia Collection and the Dutch National Primula Collection.[8]

FREEDOM AT LAST! Raccoon #1 is free. He's still pretty friendly... He wasn't that interested in running far away, he really just wanted to get to trees and water. Hopefully the park is a better habitat for him than our attic. Of course, raccoons supposedly home 5-10 miles. But we made sure to cross to the outside of the beltway, so he would have to be pretty stubborn to make it all the way back here. The park is much bigger than the creek between my street and the next. Stay tuned -- in a couple of months, we caught raccoon #2. Since then, there have been no more raccoons -- but there is still a squirrel living in our attic.

Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata)

Also called Somali Giraffe. is a subspecies of giraffe native to Somalia, northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia. Reticulated giraffes can interbreed with other giraffe subspecies in captivity or if they come into contact with populations of other subspecies in the wild.

The reticulated giraffe is among the most well-known of the nine giraffe subspecies, and together with the Rothschild giraffe it is by far the giraffe most commonly seen in zoos.[1] Its coat consists of large, polygonal liver-colored spots outlined by a network of bright white lines. The blocks may sometimes appear deep red and may also cover the legs. The extraordinary height of giraffes is attributed to a ritual known as "necking" where two males fight for reproduction rights by slamming their necks into one another. Diergaarde Blijdorp (Official Dutch name: Stichting Koninklijke Rotterdamse Diergaarde, Foundation Royal Zoo of Rotterdam) is a zoo in the northwestern part of Rotterdam, one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands. In 2007 it celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Diergaarde Blijdorp is a member of the Dutch Zoo Federation (NVD) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).


Breeding programs





A Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens fulgens) in Diergaarde Blijdorp. Blijdorp coordinates the international breeding program for this species.
Diergaarde Blijdorp participates in about 70 breeding programs and studbooks, and coordinates a couple of them, including the international breeding program for Red Pandas, EEPs for Asian Elephant, Komodo Dragon, Red-crowned and Siberian Crane, Visayan Warty Pig and Egyptian Tortoise, and the ESB for the Crowned Pigeons.[7]

Blijdorp also houses a botanical garden and manages both the Dutch National Bromelia Collection and the Dutch National Primula Collection.[8]

History





Giraffes and monumental building
The original Rotterdam Zoo was lost in the bombing of Rotterdam in World War II, which destroyed most of the city centre. Some streetnames, such as Diergaardesingel (Zoolane), still recall the old zoo. Blijdorp was rebuilt slightly to the north, where it opened to the public in its current location on December 7, 1940. The new zoo was designed by Dutch architect Sybold van Ravesteyn, who designed the central railway station in Rotterdam, as well. In 2001, 'Blijdorp' became almost twice as large when it opened a new western part, called Oceanium, with its main attraction an aquarium. In 2007, the zoo was declared a rijksmonument.[3]

In May 2007 the zoo appeared in the news when Bokito, Blijdorp's silverback gorilla, escaped from his enclosure and seriously injured a female visitor. Before the attack, the woman was a regular visitor of the zoo (on average 4 times per week) and claimed to have a special bond with Bokito, regularly touching the glass between her and the gorilla, making eye contact and smiling to him.[4]

In October 2010, the city of Rotterdam decided to reduce its yearly funding of Blijdorp from nearly 4.5 to about 0.8 million Euro until 2015.[5] The zoo and its supporters protested the decision, claiming it is unclear if the zoo can continue to operate with the reduced budget.[6]
