"Pierced Lizard"

Up to eight feet in length, the skull of the Cretaceous dinosaur Torosaurus is one of the longest known skulls of any land animal, living or extinct.
Like its contemporary Triceratops, Torosaurus had horns above its eyes and nostrils and a bony frill covering its neck region. These horns, comparable to those of modern-day rhinos, may have been used for defense against predators , in competition for mates, and -- along with the imposing frill -- for display to members of their own kind.

Prehistoric Bison Horns
extinct animals
These are the horns and top of the cranium of a Bison priscus.
This animal is now extinct and has been so since about 10 thousand years ago.
It seems to have died out when the forests environment began encroaching on its savanna-like habitat.

Bison got smaller after this transition resulting in the ones we know today.

Steppe Bison
extinct animals
Steppe bison ranged throughout northern Europe, Asia and Beringia during the Ice Age. It lived in Beringia throughout the last 700,000 years, and was one of the most widespread animals of this region. It appeared in only a few scattered places in the rest of western North America.

These large bison were hunted by humans in Europe, Asia and North America. The most recent known fossils are about 8,000 years old. Steppe bison may have evolved into the wood bison and plains bison of today, rather than becoming extinct along with many Ice Age animals 10,000 years ago.

These animals survive on poor quality pasture in the grassland/bush mosaic sandwiched between the wetter coastal forest and the drier thorn-scrub hinterland of eastern Kenya around the Tana river area. It was once also found in a large part of southern Somalia but is very likely now extinct there.
