Canberra Zoo

The National Zoo and Aquarium is privately owned by Canberra businessman Richard Tindale, and is maintained as a predominantly family-run business. The zoo receives no Government or Commonwealth support, and relies on entry fees from the public to continue operations. The zoo also relies on a large number of volunteer recruits to aid in the management of its grounds and the animals residing there.

The Zoo is the only combined zoo and aquarium in Australia. The zoo has both Australian endemic species and introduced species including the largest collection of big cats in Australia, including, until recently, the only tiglon in Australasia. The zoo is also involved in a number of breeding programs for endangered species.

A step closer to extinction: Rana Jambato de Limón - Limón Harlequin Frog

Endangered frog species. This couple of Limón harlequin frogs was found in the area of the Napinaza River affected by works on the Limón-Bella Unión road in Ecuador. The female lies dead on the river bank. The male, however, continues to embrace her without realizing that his partner is dead. The male died shortly after this photograph was taken. The population affected by the road works is one of the last known for this species.

Buceros bicornis

Family/Sub-family Bucerotidae

Species name author Linnaeus, 1758

Range & population Buceros bicornis has a wide distribution, occurring in China (rare resident in west and south-west Yunnan and south-east Tibet), India (locally fairly common, but declining), Nepal (local and uncommon, largely in protected areas), Bhutan (fairly common), Bangladesh (vagrant), Myanmar (scarce to locally common resident throughout), Thailand (widespread, generally scarce but locally common), Laos (formerly common; currently widespread but scarce and a major decline has clearly occurred), Vietnam (rare and declining resident), Cambodia (rare), Peninsular Malaysia (uncommon to more or less common) and Indonesia (uncommon on Sumatra).

Ecology: This species frequents evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, ranging out into open deciduous areas to visit fruit trees and ascending slopes to at least 1,560 m. The abundance of this species tends to be correlated with the density of large trees, and it is therefore most common in unlogged forest.

Threats Logging is likely to have impacted this species throughout its range, particularly as it shows a preference for forest areas with large trees that may be targeted by loggers. Forest clearance for agriculture is also likely to have contributed to declines. It is particularly susceptible to hunting pressure as it is large, visits predictable feeding sites (such as fruiting trees) and its casques are kept or sold as trophies.

My original photograph of this Sumatran Tiger was taken at the Phoenix Zoo on March 12, 2011.

The Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is one of only five subspecies of tiger left in the world. These subspecies, the Bengal, The Indochinese, the Siberian, the Chinese, and the Sumatran tigers, are all on the U.S. Department of the Interior's Endangered Species list.

Lion tailed Macaque
Macaca silenus

Considered most endangered of all monkeys, not many survive in the wild. Found only in the southern part of Indian subcontinent. This area is designated as a biodiversity hotspot and just as other biodiversity spots it is under heavy threat of human pressure.

These animals do not seem to adjust well to human settlements like their cousins and are listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red list. Though the efforts in the last twenty years have brought them back from the brink, the future is still uncertain. These species are doomed for exisitence only in captivity.

They are called lion-tailed because of the tuft in the tail like that of a lion. However, look at their mane. They can very well be called lion-headed macaque as well. The word macaque is said to come from an African word for monkeys. They are the smallest of all the species of macaques.

They say their voice in the forest can be mistaken for that of a human and the 'coyee' sound that they make resembles the hindi 'koi hai?' meaning 'anyone there'.

EDIT Thanks to all those who liked the title. Let me clarify that it is not my creation. It is an old joke and the origin is unknown (to me.)

The Grévy's zebra (Equus grevyi), also known as the Imperial zebra, is the largest and most endangered of the three species of zebra. The Grévy's zebra is found in Kenya and Ethiopia. Compared with other zebras, it is tall, has large ears, and its stripes are narrower.

Red panda, Darjeeling Zoo, West Bengal / Gorkhaland, India
endangered species of animals
Darjeeling Zoo (correctly, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park) while most certainly being a zoo, is also a breeding centre for the red panda (also known as the firefox). The red panda is the state animal of Sikkim, the state to the north of West Bengal/Ghorkaland, and is severely endangered due to hunting and habitat destruction.

The breeding program at the zoo aims to re-introduce more red pandas into the wild and re-establish the species in the hills of Bengal and Nepal.

For that reason, and also because the tiger they have there is rescued from a circus, and because they also have breeding programmes for the Himalayan wolf and the Snow Leopard, I think this particular zoo deserves support.

California Condor

This is not a good photo, but the subject is important. This is as close as I got to a California
condor during this year. If you want to see a better view of one of these birds, click on the Condor Tag at the right. During this time when my family was near it, at the San Diego zoo's Wild Animal Park, it didn't fly any closer, or turn its head toward me. California
condors are on the brink of extinction. Heroic efforts are being taken so that
they don't become extinct. Some condors have now been released into the wild, and have reproduced.

Genesis 1:26
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them
have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and
over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that
creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and
fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over
the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (ESV)

Part of God's charge to humans was to take care of other creatures, which is
often referred to as stewardship. Although we must have other priorities, part
of our job is to try to keep other types of living things alive.

Green Iguana (Iguana iguana)
endangered species of animals
Green iguanas are diurnal and arboreal and often found near water. Agile climbers, iguanas can fall up to 50 feet and land unhurt (iguanas use their hind leg claws to "hook" leaves, branches, or anything in a "clasping" motion to break a fall). During cold, wet weather, Green iguanas prefer to stay on the ground for greater warmth. When swimming an iguana remains submerged and lets its four legs hang limply against its side and propels itself through the water with powerful tail strokes. Because of the Green iguana's popularity in the pet trade and as a food source in Latin America, they are listed on the CITES Appendix II, which means that while they are not an endangered species, "their trade must be controlled so as to not harm the species in the future".
