Darjeeling Zoo (correctly, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park) while most certainly being a zoo, is also a breeding centre for the red panda (also known as the firefox). The red panda is the state animal of Sikkim, the state to the north of West Bengal/Ghorkaland, and is severely endangered due to hunting and habitat destruction.
The breeding program at the zoo aims to re-introduce more red pandas into the wild and re-establish the species in the hills of Bengal and Nepal.
For that reason, and also because the tiger they have there is rescued from a circus, and because they also have breeding programmes for the Himalayan wolf and the Snow Leopard, I think this particular zoo deserves support.

They are among the most intelligent primates and use a variety of sophisticated tools, also making sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. Their hair is typically reddish-brown, instead of the brown or black hair typical of other great apes.
Native to Indonesia and Malaysia, orangutans are currently found only in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, though fossils have been found in Java, the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Vietnam and Mainland China. Coquina Clams

Look where the person is standing: right where the waves come in and out. That’s where to find coquina clams and mole crabs.
Coquina clams can be found from Virginia to Florida, and as far west as Texas. Coquina are a common species on most Florida beaches and represent an important food source for shorebirds and other beach-dwelling animals.

Rare White-Naped Crane Hatches National Zoo Conservation and Research Center

A female white-naped crane chick, hatched May 23 at the National Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center, shown at 5 days old with its adoptive parent. The chick is being raised by its paternal grandparents after its human-imprinted mother displayed inappropriate behavior during breeding and was impregnated through artificial insemination. This two-week-old chick is the most genetically important hatchling in the White-Naped Crane Species Survival Program. Destruction of its native wetland habitat in northeast China has dramatically decreased white-naped crane populations in the wild to an estimated 5,000. The National Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center currently has 10 cranes; there are an additional 60 animals in the White-Naped Crane Species Survival Program.
Proboscis Monkey

A distinctive trait of this monkey is the male's large protruding nose, from which it takes its name. The big nose is thought to be used in mating and is a characteristic of the males, reaching up to 7 inches in length. The females also have big noses compared to other monkey species, but not as big as the males. Besides attracting mates, the nose serves as a resonating chamber and works by amplifying their warning calls. When the animal becomes agitated its nose swells with blood, making warning calls louder and more intense.
The Proboscis monkey can be found in island of Borneo in South-east Asia but they are not even found throughout all of Borneo. Due to ongoing habitat loss and hunting in some areas, only about 7000 are known to still exist in the wild. The Proboscis Monkey is evaluated as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. [Wikipedia]
Taken in the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Reserve, one of the few places in the world where you can still see a proboscis monkey in the wild.

Beautiful macaws and parrots within the nature and wildlife center that we visited. Only this macaw seemed chatty and it was Hellooo, Hellooo.... nothing else. Although small and out of the way, the animals and birds were all in wonderful condition and highly active.

This little darling is a female juvenile orangutan named Menari. She was born at Audobon Zoo in 2009. She is an Sumatran orangutan, a species that is endangered in its Indonesian homeland.

The Emperor Tamarin (Saguinus imperator) is a tamarin allegedly named for its resemblance to the German emperor Wilhelm II. It lives in the southwest Amazon Basin, in east Peru, north Bolivia and in the west Brazilian states of Acre and Amazonas.
Emperor Tamarin with two youngThe fur of the Emperor Tamarin is predominantly grey colored, with yellowish speckles on its chest. The hands and feet are black and the tail is brown. Outstanding is its long, white mustache, which extends to both sides beyond the shoulders. The animal reaches a length of 24 to 26 cm (9 1/2 to 10 1/4 in), plus a 35 cm (13 3/4 in) long tail. It weighs approximately 300 to 400 g (10 1/2 to 14 oz).
This primate inhabits tropical rain forests, living deep in the forest and also in open tree-covered areas. This diurnal species walks or runs quadrupedally through the forest, spending the majority of its days in the trees with quick, safe movements and broad jumps among the limbs.

Endangered mussels planted on the bottom of the Powell River

On September 25, 2012, the Service , Virginia Tech, Lincoln Memorial University, and several other partners released 5,000 endangered mussels into the Tennessee stretch of the Powell River.
Biologists released more than 4,000 one-year-old endangered oyster mussels and 1,000 one-year-old endangered combshell mussels across four sites on the Powell River. The animals were propagated and reared at Virginia Tech’s Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Center in Blacksburg, Virginia. The release is the largest recovery effort to date for the two endangered mussels in the Powell River.
The Powell River is one of the nation’s most diverse, with nearly 100 species of fish, and 35 species of mussels. Mussels benefit people and wildlife alike. Mussels clean rivers by filtering algae, bacteria and debris suspended in the water. Mussels are sensitive to water pollutions and are used by scientists to monitor river health. Many animals such as otter, fish, and migratory birds reply upon healthy freshwater mussel assemblages as a food source.
