Grevy's Zebras by Joe! (aka Head & Butts - no poo)

Joe took this shot with my camera at the LA Zoo while I was occupied elsewhere. I thought he did very well. I am not going to post the picture he took of Zebra manure though. What a funny guy...

And now for the facts:
Grevy's zebra is the largest of all wild equines. It is found in the wild in Kenya and Ethiopia. Ancient Romans used Grevy's Zebras in their circuses.
They are considered endangered due to hunting for its skin, habitat destruction, human encroachment on watering holes, and competition with domestic grazing animals.

Panoramic view of the beachfront at Oyster Pond Outlet, a major freshwater outfall on the southeastern shore of St. Vincent NWR. The wind lashes you as soon as you top the foredunes, and it is pretty much a constant in this beachscape. Note the many animal tracks that zig zag the windblown sand, many of them from the prior night, as they don't last long in this kind of wind. Offshore, at the top of the screen, one can see the extent of the growing land mass called Flag island. Near the end of the video, the lush, green curving west end of the island, five miles away, can be seen in the upper right of the screen. Video by USFWS Volunteer Robin Rickel Vroegop.

Celebrate Wildlife Day provides an opportunity for park visitors to learn about the Grand Canyon’s abundant wildlife and the work of wildlife biologists. It is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the National Park Service, Grand Canyon Association Arizona Game and Fish Department of Wildlife Education and Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center, the Peregrine Fund, Xanterra Parks and Resorts, and the Grand Canyon Unified School District. Celebrate Wildlife Day is dedicated to the memory of park biologist Eric York, who devoted his life to the study of wildlife.

Macaws are native to Mexico, Central America, South America, and formerly the Caribbean. Most species are associated with forest, especially rainforest, but others prefer brushy woodland or savanna imitative semitropical wild habitats. Macaws are high up on the threatened bird list and extinction may endanger most of the species without preservation and zoological efforts.

Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx)

The Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) or white oryx is a medium-sized antelope with a distinct shoulder bump, long, straight horns, and a tufted tail. It is a bovid, and the smallest member of Oryx genus, native to desert and steppe areas of the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian oryx was extinct in the wild by the early 1970s, but was saved in zoos and private preserves and reintroduced into the wild starting in 1980.
In 1986, the Arabian oryx was classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, and in 2011, it was the first animal to receive Vulnerable status again after having been listed as extinct in the wild. As of 2011, populations were estimated at over 1,000 individuals in the wild, and 6,000–7,000 individuals in captivity worldwide.

Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii)

The Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) is one of the two species of orangutans. Found only on the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia, it is rarer than the Bornean orangutan. The species has been assessed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2000. It is considered one of "The World's 25 Most Endangered Primates." A survey in 2004 estimated that around 7,300 Sumatran orangutans still live in the wild.

This image is a derivative of my original photograph of a Sumatran Tiger taken at the Phoenix Zoo on March 12, 2011.

The Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is one of only five subspecies of tiger left in the world. These subspecies, the Bengal, The Indochinese, the Siberian, the Chinese, and the Sumatran tigers, are all on the U.S. Department of the Interior's Endangered Species list.

Strong-shouldered and shiny horned

This is a mighty beast. Six feet at the shoulder weighing 1000 kilo grams, it needs to fear only three enemies - a mightier bull or a marauding tiger or humans. These are the wild cousins of domesticated cattle but are rather large and avoid humans.

Listed as vulnerable, they face depleting grazing areas and infections from domestic cattle. There were instances when big herds were wiped out from attack of diseases such as foot-and-mouth. Their cousins in the fareast and China are even faring worse and are put on critically endangered list.

This is not the best view of this wonderful animal. He gave me very little time before he disappeared into the woods. I was watching his mate when this big fellow suddenly came into view and unnerved me. Of course, they were captive and I was behind the concrete barricade but still it was an awesome sight seeing him so close.

I had seen one in the wild few years ago but even then he did not give me a chance to set the camera. I was using an SLR film camera and driving the car and I had no chance. For such massive animals, they are so fast and vanish in a jiffy.

Nomascus is the second most speciose genus of gibbons (family Hylobatidae). Originally this genus was a subgenus of Hylobates, and all individuals were considered one species, Hylobates concolor. Species within Nomascus are characterized by 52 chromosomes. Some species are all black, some light with a distinct black tuft of crown fur, and some by distinct, light-colored cheek patches. Nomascus is found from southern China (Yunnan) to southern Vietnam, and also on Hainan Island. One of the genus' species, Nomascus nasutus, has been deemed "the most critically endangered ape species in the world". All of the species in this genus are endangered or critically endangered.
