Shellyfish in Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, 7th of December 2011.
Jellies have roamed the seas for at least 500 million years, and possibly 700 million years or more, making them the oldest multi-organ animal.

Snorkel Flyby

The playful curiosity of this eagle ray reminded me of a story from the inventor of the Deepflight “flying submarine.” On an early test dive, he found himself dancing with a curious eagle ray.... Moving like they do might be a signal of kinship... and may help express universal gestures for play...

Which reminds me of Dr. Stuart Brown, the founder of the Institute for Play, who has a fascinating series of photos of animals playing (ravens sliding on their backs down an icy slope, monkeys rolling snowballs and playing leapfrog, and various inter-species games). “Warm-blooded animals play; fish and reptiles do not.”

“We are designed to play. We need 3D motion. The smarter the creature the more they play. The sea squirt auto-digests its brain when it becomes sessile.”

Such a cute little pup in training to be a service animal. Earlier in my photo stream there are two other images of this little fellow in the baby sling his owner uses for him. They are part of the Arizona Goldens, LLC, an organization of people who promote and train golden retrievers to become important companions and service animals to those with a variety of disabilities.

and the result: success! (for the bobcat, anyway)

this bobcat was out and about at Steep Ravine all weekend. literally every time i walked around for 15 minutes or more, i would see her. she even came through our campsite, and then caught and ate four animals in a row within 30 minutes, no more than 20 feet from us. lucky for me, she didn't seem to mind being watched. stay tuned for more pictures, including some of her leaping in midair.

Animal Farm artwork

Image by The National Archives UK
Description: Preliminary drawing for design of Animal Farm strip cartoon.

In 1950 the Foreign Office commissioned a strip cartoon version of Animal Farm from the cartoonist Norman Pett and his writing partner Donald Freeman. Various embassies then encouraged overseas newspapers to publish the anti-communist strip. It was translated into a number of languages and also turned into a slide show for public performance.

The first installment is also on Flickr

Lions Celebrate Their First Birthdays at the Smithsonian's National Zoo

Some cool animal pound images:

Lions Celebrate Their First Birthdays at the Smithsonian's National Zoo
animal pound

On Sept. 16, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s seven lion cubs celebrated their birthdays at the Great Cats Exhibit.

Keepers created seven gift boxes (one for each cub) that were gift-wrapped with approved paper products and held together with a “paste” made of flower and water. Inside each box was an individual-sized frozen treat made of ice (water), shaved beef and a piece of oxtail.

The Zoo’s Nutrition department created a bloodcicle cake in the shape of the number “1.” The cake weighed about 50 pounds, and was composed of ice (water), two whole cow femurs cut in half, 5 pounds of shaved beef and a half-gallon of cow blood.

The Zoo’s seven lion cubs were born to two mothers. All seven cubs were sired by Luke. Shera gave birth on Aug. 31, 2010 to four cubs: John, Lelie, Fahari and Zuri. Nababiep gave birth on Sept. 22, 2010 to three cubs: Baruti, Aslan and Lusaka.

The Zoo’s lion cubs are genetically valuable in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan for African lions. An SSP matches individual animals across the country for breeding in order to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse and self-sustaining population. They are the first surviving cubs born at the Zoo in 22 years.

Luke, Naba and Shera came to the National Zoo in 2006 from South Africa specifically for the purpose of breeding and introducing new genes into the existing U.S. captive population.

Twelve-Spotted Skimmer
animals names
A male twelve-spotted skimmer, Libellula pulchella, pauses to clean his eyes using a pair of legs. Named for the twelve dark spots on the wings, they're also rarely known as the ten-spotted skimmer, due to the male's 10 white spots. Females lack these white spots, thus the alternate name is not very common.

I'm pretty satisfied considering the lack of a tripod, but looking back now I wish I would have cropped it better. Best viewed large. It's the same dragonfly as seen here:

It's an aborted, accidental video... But it's really funny when looped, so I had to keep it.

The fur rug is one of 2 we got at a yard sale for each. One I keep below my feet (way more comfy than hardwood floor, quite noticeable even in shoes), and the other -- we just let Oranjello have it for "his" corner. Between that, the arched cardboard cat scratchers, and the octopus jerky that we let him toss around and try to eat, he loves that corner.

The first spread from a 6-page article written by Johan Martinsson about my book, The Excavation of Mushroom Island.

Special thanks to Mózsi Kiss for providing the following translation.

************************************************************************

The Excavation of Mushroom Kingdom, by Johan Martinsson

A newly published archaeological document reveals one of the most astonishing discoveries of modern history – what we call “Mushroom Kingdom” has once existed. LEVEL has read “The Excavation of Mushroom Island”.

“In 1983, an up and coming biology student from the University of North Florida, by the name of Logan Zawacki, was awarded the Denise K. Weaver Grant with the intent of monitoring the short-tailed albatross population on the Japanese island of Izu-Torishima, also known as “Bird Island”. Little did he know this research project would lead to the biggest archaeological find of the 20th century.”
-from “The Excavation of Mushroom Island”, foreword

Izu-Torishima is a small island, about five square kilometers, located some 600 kilometers south of Tokyo, in the middle of the Philippine Sea. In reality, it is the top of an active underwater volcano, which has had two eruptions during the 20th century. The second time this occurred, in 1939, no one was harmed, fortunately. Sadly, this was because the entire population of the island had been wiped out in 1902, which was the time of the first eruption. Needless to say, it is extremely dangerous to venture into the crater of this volcano.

Still, this is exactly what Logan Zawacki does, shortly after arriving at the island. He descends into the volcano in order to study the brooding ground of the red albatross, but instead, he finds something completely different. He gets lost in the darkness of the narrow crater, and ends up in a winding subterranean tunnel, sloping downwards. He walks in the pitch black for a long, long time – and when he finally sees light again, he realizes that he has ended up in a completely different place. On a forgotten island, somewhere in the vicinity of Izu-Torishima.

On the island, Zawacki finds traces of an ancient culture, previously unfamiliar to him. Skeletal remains from animals unlike anything he has seen before. Sculptures telling stories he has never heard before.

Eventually he finds his way back through the tunnel, only to return later to the lost place – which he names “Mushroom Island” – with his science team. Over the course of nine years they study the islands, and they make some of the most surprising discoveries of modern archaeological history.
