BACKSTORY: After the Descendents concert, we were hanging out in the parking lot waiting for it to clear out a bit before heading to the next venue for the ALL concert. Some poor girl asked us if we had jumper cables, and of course we did. She was very grateful and said, "You are like the 50th person we asked!" (What's with people not carrying jumper cables anymore? You sad, unprepared fucks!)

Anyway, while Clint was helping them, he found a frog in the parking lot. Ok, actually a toad, but still. ALL has a song called Frog, and they talk about catching a frog, and the difficulties of trying to sell it. And now we had a frog! What are the odds. Clint tried to sell the frog, but nobody wanted to buy it, as predicted by the song. The frog in the song is named Oscar, so naturally, this frog's name is now Oscar.

Oscar had an eventful evening that night. He went from the parking lot at the Festival Pier in Philadelphia to a parking garage at the next venue, spent a night in New Jersey, came back to Virginia, met our kitties, and now lives in our back yard where he has a lot of space and a creek... And no parking lots or boats mosh pits.

Bonneted Bat

The snowy plover, American oystercatcher, black skimmer and least tern lay their eggs and hatch their young on Florida beaches, spoil islands and rooftops. Loss and degradation of habitat are major threats to the shorebirds’ survival, with their colonies and nesting areas becoming fewer and more fragmented. Because of their declining numbers in Florida and habitat loss, these beach-nesting birds qualify for listing as state-threatened species.

The just-released draft action plan for imperiled beach-nesting birds is among the second group of draft species action plans covering 60 species that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is unveiling in 2013.

The alligator snapping turtle, Florida bonneted bat, white-crowned pigeon and Florida tree snail also have newly drafted species action plans. The public is invited to review and comment on the plans at share1.myfwc.com/ISMP/default.aspx now through April 23, 2013.

Earlier this year, the FWC released the first group of draft species action plans that included 23 species. The agency will roll out the remaining plans later this spring and summer. For a full list of species and to review all of the draft species action plans, visit our website at MyFWC.com/WildlifeHabitats and select Imperiled Species.

The draft action plan for imperiled beach-nesting birds spells out steps to conserve these four species with the ultimate goal that they no longer will be listed as threatened.

“The dynamic nature of Florida beaches, from natural changes caused by storms and erosion to the presence of beachgoers and the loss of habitat, poses significant challenges to the survival of beach-nesting birds,” said Claire Sunquist Blunden, the FWC’s stakeholder coordinator for imperiled species management planning.

The FWC’s draft plan outlines commonly shared conservation measures that will benefit the snowy plovers, American oystercatchers, black skimmers and least terns throughout our state. Successful conservation of beach-nesting birds will require action not only by the FWC but also the cooperation of the many different groups which use, own and care about Florida’s coastal resources. They include local, state and federal government agencies, the public, private property owners, non-governmental organizations, businesses and researchers.

People enjoying Florida beaches during spring break need to be aware they should keep their distance from beach-nesting birds. For more tips, go to MyFWC.com/WildlifeHabitats and select “Share the Beach with Beach-nesting Birds .”

The draft species action plans are a vital component of Florida’s new conservation model, which first involved preparing Biological Status Reviews for 60 imperiled species and now requires developing plans to conserve each of them. Once the 49 plans covering 60 species are revised based on public input, FWC teams will look for common themes and actions to develop Integrated Conservation Strategies.

“We hope the public and stakeholders will comment on the draft species action plans and share their ideas on common themes or actions among plans,” said Claire Sunquist Blunden.

Finally, an Imperiled Species Management Plan will be developed that ties together the action plans covering 60 species, addressing the commonalities of what’s necessary to conserve all the wildlife represented in the plan.

For more information and to see the species action plans, go to MyFWC.com/Imperiled.

After croquet, we stopped at the Beach House Cafe, where they were just starting to cook the lobsters for the Monday lobster bake.

What they do is:

1) They run a fire during the day, until the coals are steaming, steaming, steaming hot.
2) They throw in a bunch of corn and potatoes and seaweed. The seaweed isn't eaten, it simply contains a lot of moisture that is released when sitting on the coals, causing everything to be steamed.
3) They throw on the lobsters (live, of course) and more seaweed. Lobsters writhe in delicious agony.
4) They cover the entire thing with an oil soaked canvas.
5) They cover that with a huge tarp.
6) They put rocks on the tarp.

Basically, a few wisps of steam come out, but for the most part, they end up getting steamed at incredible temperatures (and all natural ingredients).

Carolyn's family signed up for the Wednesday Lobster Bake, but everyone missed them cooking the lobsters. We're glad we happened to catch it on Monday.

I harvested this bull elk in Northern Utah in November 2008. Having this opportunity to take such an amazing animal was an incredible challenge and thrill. I scouted for months and then watched this bull for several days before the hunt. I was a 4 mile, very difficult hike to his location. I made a much-practiced 320 yard shot to kill him instantly in his bed.

He weighed over 1000 pounds and the antlers score around 370 inches Boone & Crockett.

Diergaarde Blijdorp (Official Dutch name: Stichting Koninklijke Rotterdamse Diergaarde, Foundation Royal Zoo of Rotterdam) is a zoo in the northwestern part of Rotterdam, one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands. In 2007 it celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Diergaarde Blijdorp is a member of the Dutch Zoo Federation (NVD) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).

History

Giraffes and monumental building
The original Rotterdam Zoo was lost in the bombing of Rotterdam in World War II, which destroyed most of the city centre. Some streetnames, such as Diergaardesingel (Zoolane), still recall the old zoo. Blijdorp was rebuilt slightly to the north, where it opened to the public in its current location on December 7, 1940. The new zoo was designed by Dutch architect Sybold van Ravesteyn, who designed the central railway station in Rotterdam, as well. In 2001, 'Blijdorp' became almost twice as large when it opened a new western part, called Oceanium, with its main attraction an aquarium. In 2007, the zoo was declared a rijksmonument.[3]

In May 2007 the zoo appeared in the news when Bokito, Blijdorp's silverback gorilla, escaped from his enclosure and seriously injured a female visitor. Before the attack, the woman was a regular visitor of the zoo (on average 4 times per week) and claimed to have a special bond with Bokito, regularly touching the glass between her and the gorilla, making eye contact and smiling to him.[4]

In October 2010, the city of Rotterdam decided to reduce its yearly funding of Blijdorp from nearly 4.5 to about 0.8 million Euro until 2015.[5] The zoo and its supporters protested the decision, claiming it is unclear if the zoo can continue to operate with the reduced budget.[6]

Nerium oleander
names for animals
From Wikipedia -
Nerium oleander is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the dogbane family Apocynaceae. It is the only species currently classified in the genus Nerium. It is most commonly known as Oleander but has many other names. The ancient city of Volubilis in Morocco took its name from the old Latin name for the flower. Oleander is one of the most poisonous of commonly grown garden plants, and can be very toxic if ingested in sufficient quantity.

Description
Oleander grows to 2–6 m (6.6–20 ft) tall, with spreading to erect branches. The leaves are in pairs or whorls of three, thick and leathery, dark green, narrow lanceolate, 5–21 cm (2.0–8.3 in) long and 1–3.5 cm (0.39–1.4 in) broad, and with an entire margin. The flowers grow in clusters at the end of each branch; they are white, pink, red or yellow, 2.5–5 cm (0.98–2.0 in) diameter, with a deeply 5-lobed corolla with a fringe round the central corolla tube. They are often, but not always, sweetly scented. The fruit is a long narrow capsule 5–23 cm (2.0–9.1 in) long, which splits open at maturity to release numerous downy seeds.
In the past, scented plants were sometimes treated as the distinct species N. odorum, but the character is not constant and it is no longer regarded as a separate taxon.

Habitat and range
N. oleander is native to a broad area from Morocco and Portugal eastward through the Mediterranean region and southern Asia to Yunnan in southern parts of China. It typically occurs around dry stream beds.

Oleander grows well in warm subtropical regions, where it is extensively used as an ornamental plant in landscapes, parks, and along roadsides. It is drought tolerant and will tolerate occasional light frost down to −10 °C (14.0 °F). It is commonly used in landscaping freeway medians in California and other mild-winter states in the Continental United States because it is easily maintained. It is deer resistant and tolerant of poor soils and drought. Oleander can also be grown in cooler climates in greenhouses and conservatories, or as indoor plants that can be kept outside in the summer. Oleander flowers are showy and fragrant and are grown for these reasons. Over 400 cultivars have been named, with several additional flower colours not found in wild plants having been selected, including red, purple, pink and orange; white and a variety of pinks are the most common. Many cultivars also have double flowers. Young plants grow best in spaces where they do not have to compete with other plants for nutrients.

Medicinal Uses
Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia written circa AD 77 claimed that despite its toxicity Oleander was an effective snakebite cure: "... if taken in wine with rue ...".
Despite a lack of any proven benefits, a range of Oleander-based treatments are being promoted on the Internet and in some alternative medicine circles, drawing a warning letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Additionally, a Texas-based biotechnology company is researching oleander as a potential treatment for skin cancers and as well as an anti-viral treatment.

Toxicity
Oleander is one of the most poisonous plants in the world and contains numerous toxic compounds, many of which are deadly to people, especially young children. (Despite this fact, it is often grown in school yards. The toxicity of Oleander is considered extremely high, and it has been reported that in some cases only a small amount had lethal or near-lethal effects. The most significant of these toxins are oleandrin and neriine, which are cardiac glycosides. They are present in all parts of the plant, but are most concentrated in the sap, which can block out receptors. High risk circumstances of exposure include children playing with the ornamental shrub, as well as adults or children tasting, chewing, ingesting portions of the plant, and inappropriate medicinal use of plant infusion.[6] Oleander bark contains rosagenin which is known for its strychnine-like effects. The entire plant, including the nectar, is toxic, and any part can cause an adverse reaction. Oleander is also known to hold its toxicity even after drying. It is thought that a handful or 10-20 leaves consumed by an adult can cause an adverse reaction, and a single leaf could be lethal to an infant or child. According to the Toxic Exposure Surveillance System (TESS) in 2002 there were 847 exposures to Oleander reported to poison centers in the United States. There are innumerable reported suicidal cases of consuming mashed oleander seeds in southern India. Around 0.23 mg per pound of body weight is lethal to many animals, and various other doses will affect other animals. Most animals can suffer a reaction or death from this plant.

Effects of poisoning
Reactions to this plant are as follows: Ingestion can cause both gastrointestinal and cardiac effects. The gastrointestinal effects can consist of nausea and vomiting, excess salivation, abdominal pain, diarrhea that may or may not contain blood, and especially in horses, colic. Cardiac reactions consist of irregular heart rate, sometimes characterized by a racing heart at first that then slows to below normal further along in the reaction. The heart may also beat erratically with no sign of a specific rhythm. Extremities may become pale and cold due to poor or irregular circulation. Reactions to poisonings from this plant can also affect the central nervous system. These symptoms can include drowsiness, tremors or shaking of the muscles, seizures, collapse, and even coma that can lead to death. Oleander sap can cause skin irritations, severe eye inflammation and irritation, and allergy reactions characterized by dermatitis.

Medical treatment required
Poisoning and reactions to Oleander plants are evident quickly, requiring immediate medical care in suspected or known poisonings of both humans and animals. Induced vomiting and gastric lavage are protective measures to reduce absorption of the toxic compounds. Charcoal may also be administered to help absorb any remaining toxins. Further medical attention may be required and will depend on the severity of the poisoning and symptoms. Temporary cardiac pacing will be required in many cases (usually for a few days) till the toxin is excreted.
Digoxin Immune Fab is the best way to cure an oleander poisoning if inducing vomiting has no or minimal success, although it is usually only used for life-threatening conditions due to side effects.

Drying of plant materials does not eliminate the toxins. It is also hazardous for animals such as sheep, horses, cattle, and other grazing animals, with as little as 100 g being enough to kill an adult horse. Plant clippings are especially dangerous to horses, as they are sweet. In July 2009, several horses were poisoned in this manner from the leaves of the plant. Symptoms of a poisoned horse include severe diarrhea and abnormal heartbeat. There are a wide range of toxins and secondary compounds within Oleander, and care should be taken around this plant due to its toxic nature. Different names for Oleander are used around the world in different locations, so when encountering a plant with this appearance, regardless of the name used for it, exercise great care and caution to avoid ingestion of any part of the plant, including its sap and dried leaves or twigs. Do not use the dried or fresh branches for spearing food, in preparing a cooking fire, or as a food skewer. Many of the Oleander relatives, such as the Desert Rose (Adenium obesum) found in East Africa, have similar leaves and flowers and are equally toxic.

Trunk oil
While the reasons are unknown, some visibly healthy oleander shrubs that have become sick or otherwise diseased may generate a type of oil from the trunk and shallow roots. Depending upon the size of the shrub, the oil quantity can vary greatly and has the capability to saturate the soil in its vicinity as the shrub's sickness progresses. This is possibly an explanation for the plant's name of "Olea", whose Latin translation is "oil". The oil is light-brown colored and possesses a rancid scent. The toxicity of the oil is unknown, because the neuro-toxic chemicals in the rest of the tree come from the leaves vein-system and not from the pulp surrounding these veins.

Ecology
Some invertebrates are known to be unaffected by oleander toxins, and feed on the plants. Caterpillars of the Oleander or Polka-dot Wasp Moth (Syntomeida epilais) feed specifically on oleanders and survive by eating only the pulp surrounding the leaf-veins, avoiding the fibers. Larvae of the Oleander or Common Crow Butterfly (Euploea core) also feed on Oleanders. The Common Crow larvae retain or modify toxins, making them unpalatable to would-be predators such as birds, but apparently not to other invertebrates such as spiders and wasps.

Popular culture
In the novel Dragonwyck, the plant and its poisonous effect are essential to the plot. The plant can be seen in the film by the same name.
White Oleander is a 1999 book by Janet Fitch that was made into a 2002 drama film with the same name directed by Peter Kosminsky; poisoning using the oleander plant is central to the plot.
One story claims that some of Napoleon's soldiers in Spain died when they used oleander sticks to roast meat.
The legend of Chloe is possibly the most well known of the Myrtles Plantation's supposed ghosts; Chloe was a slave who was reputed to have killed her mistress and the mistress' two daughters by cooking a birthday cake poisoned with oleander.
Psybient artist Bluetech produced a track named "Oleander", which was also remixed by Phutureprimitive.
The title track from the rock band Phish album, Lawn Boy, mentions "...the black oleander surrounded by blues...".
The Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah Harmer's album I'm A Mountain contains a track titled "Oleander".
In the 95th episode of Monk, "Mr Monk and the Genius" ground up oleander bark is the method of poisoning the killer chooses to murder his wife.
The song "My Old School" by Steely Dan contains the line, "Oleanders growing outside her door, soon they're gonna be in bloom up in Annandale".
