Vancouver Aquarium :
"The Aquarium houses three caimans that were born in 1978 at Fort Worth, Texas. They were sent here in 1983 from the National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. The Aquarium is the temporary home for the Golden Crocodiles until April 2000. While these rare and endangered crocs are with us, the caiman will be removed from the exhibit. The Golden Crocodiles, also known as the Indo-Pacific crocodiles, were born in Samutprakan Crocodile Farm in Thailand ".

27 July - 9 September
Take a stroll along some of London’s most scenic streets with our free Discovery Trails. We’ve put together six unique colour-coded walking routes across the historic city centre that will take you on a journey of discovery to the greatest sights and sounds of London. Keep an eye out for official Games mascots Mandeville and Wenlock, who’ll be bringing the trails to life and highlighting some great photo opportunities. Each will be individually designed, animating the routes in a unique way that captures the spirit of London. Why not try all of the trails and see if you can get a snapshot on camera?
The 84 official Wenlock and Mandeville sculptures will be in place for two months from mid July to the end of the Paralympics and are part of the Mayor of London Presents programs of free cultural events and attractions being staged across the capital to celebrate the Games.
Mounted on concrete plinths, each fibreglass figure will be 2.3 metres high and weigh one tonne. They have been decorated by 22 designers to reflect their surroundings.
The £490,000 scheme is being promoted by Mayor Boris Johnson, who has overseen similar public art events, including life-sized baby elephants and Fabergé eggs mounted on plinths around the capital.

On the way back from a wander around the Forest of Dean, we found some cows in a field. Their dumb expressions were funny enough to make us stop the car and take some photos.
They LOVED it!
By the time we had been there about 5 minutes, they'd all come over to see what was going on!
Shell bank

Shell bank in a little cove by the old lime kiln on Coney Island, St.George's, Bermuda.
I shot these shells through the water, which was very shallow and very calm at the time.
This isn't meant to be a scientific shot but while I'm about it, most of the shells seem to be ark shells (Arca) and spiny oysters (Spondylus). The shells are encrusted by a variety of other organisms including stony reef corals (Siderastrea), bryozoans, other bivalves (? Chama) and coralline algae. (NB I'm not sure about the bivalve names but the coral name is definite!)
It wasn't clear whether this was simply a fishermen's midden or a natural shell bank. If natural, then it seems a bit strange that the insides of the shells are all relatively fresh whereas the outsides must have been exposed to settlement by other organisms for quite a long time, maybe as much as 3-5 years.

Introducing Charlotte

A few months ago we decided it was time to find a friend for Esther. Everything I've read about guinea pigs states that they're gregarious creatures who enjoy and benefit from having at least one cavy friend. It was all a matter of waiting for the right little pig to come along. We found her this weekend. Charlotte is only five weeks old and is an incredibly soft Abyssinian guinea pig, almost entirely black with little ginger patches here and there. She's still getting used to us and her new surroundings. I think we'll start the gradual introduction process this weekend. I sure hope they like each other. Our hope is that Charlotte's tender age will help facilitate the process.

Up to eight feet in length, the skull of the Cretaceous dinosaur Torosaurus is one of the longest known skulls of any land animal, living or extinct. Like its contemporary Triceratops, Torosaurus had horns above its eyes and nostrils and a bony frill covering its neck region. These horns, comparable to those of modern-day rhinos, may have been used for defense against predators , in competition for mates, and -- along with the imposing frill -- for display to members of their own kind.

Macaws are native to Mexico, Central America, South America, and formerly the Caribbean. Most species are associated with forest, especially rainforest, but others prefer brushy woodland or savanna imitative semitropical wild habitats. Macaws are high up on the threatened bird list and extinction may endanger most of the species without preservation and zoological efforts.

This is Crystal, one of the two gray wolves (Canis lupus) new to the zoo from Canada. Why is she white? Well, the zookeepers think her mom mated with an Arctic wolf (also Canis lupus but has a white coat to better blend in to its surroundings) and Crystal picked up dad's coloring.
Both she and Coby (not picture) were hand-raised by humans. They are still getting used to their environment and were constantly on the move while we were there, except for a few moments when Crystal stopped to check things out.

If you ever go to Bogota you must not miss the Botero Museum. This museum, which is free, features a large collection of Botero's paintings and sculptures plus dozens of other works by 20th Century artists including Picasso, Miro, Chagall, etc. Visiting this museum was a remarkable experience.

If you ever go to Bogota you must not miss the Botero Museum. This museum, which is free, features a large collection of Botero's paintings and sculptures plus dozens of other works by 20th Century artists including Picasso, Miro, Chagall, etc. Visiting this museum was a remarkable experience.
