Jaguar Skulls

The jaguar was one of the most revered animals to the Aztecs. There were jaguar warriors who wore the animal's skins.

The jaguar skull closely resembles that of the tiger although it looks as though the jaguar's sagittal crest isn't as pronounced. I don't know if the smaller skull is that of a female or juvenile. I don't think there's that much sexual dimorphism within the species.

The National Zoo and Aquarium is privately owned by Canberra businessman Richard Tindale, and is maintained as a predominantly family-run business. The zoo receives no Government or Commonwealth support, and relies on entry fees from the public to continue operations. The zoo also relies on a large number of volunteer recruits to aid in the management of its grounds and the animals residing there.

The Zoo is the only combined zoo and aquarium in Australia. The zoo has both Australian endemic species and introduced species including the largest collection of big cats in Australia, including, until recently, the only tiglon in Australasia. The zoo is also involved in a number of breeding programs for endangered species.

The lion (Panthera leo) is one of four big cats in the genus Panthera, and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, which was about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru.

Lions live for around 10–14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live over 20 years. In the wild, males seldom live longer than ten years as fights with rivals occasionally cause injuries. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although they will scavenge if the opportunity arises. While lions do not typically hunt humans selectively, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey.

The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50 percent over the past two decades in its African range. Lion populations are untenable outside of designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Lions have been kept in menageries since Roman times and have been a key species sought for exhibition in zoos the world over since the late eighteenth century. Zoos are cooperating worldwide in breeding programs for the endangered Asiatic subspecies.

Visually, the male lion is highly distinctive and is easily recognized by its mane. The lion, particularly the face of the male, is one of the most widely recognized animal symbols in human culture. Depictions have existed from the Upper Paleolithic period, with carvings and paintings from the Lascaux and Chauvet Caves, through virtually all ancient and medieval cultures where they historically occurred. It has been extensively depicted in literature, in sculptures, in paintings, on national flags, and in contemporary films and literature.

My friend Sally shot these four ducks with a 12-bore yesterday. Before you all complain, she and Ben live in the country, source real local meat for the wonderful pub they own, and hunt legally from sustainable stocks. She's also a good shot.

I also ate a stew that had three squirrels in it today (delicious), and saw a Buzzard kill a woodpigeon on the road near the pub.

Not a good day from the point of view of vegetarians, or those who can't accept that in the real world animals (including us) kill other animals.

My apologies if this upsets you. I very much respect vegetarians and those with good and considered reasoning for hating the killing of animals. That said, please don't hate me for enjoying meat. I have to admit I'm no fan of hunting though, but the composition and colour of these ducks are still beautiful to me somehow.

Donkey charity donation provides warmth for retired working animals in Santorini
PRESS RELEASE from The Donkey Sanctuary
25 January 2012

Retired working donkeys, mules and horses on the Greek island of Santorini are staying warm and dry this winter thanks to the generosity of international animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary.

The animals are all in the care of the Santorini Animal Welfare Association (SAWA) after being retired from work or abandoned by their former owners, but concerns were raised about keeping them warm and dry over the winter months as the charity had nowhere for them to shelter from the weather.

Staff at The Donkey Sanctuary’s Axnoller Farm in Dorset pledged to send a number of smaller donkey rugs not currently in use out to SAWA to help with the problem, and a further eight rugs were purchased for the larger donkeys, mules and horses at a cost of £335.

Christina Kaloudi at SAWA explains why the rugs were needed:

“We are so grateful for the rugs as it has proved to be a very cold and rainy winter and I am sure we would have had casualties as we do not have indoors premises. At the moment we have 3 donkeys, 7 mules and 2 horses all retired from their long working days at the Bay of Fira or abandoned due to injury or lack to sustain them. Canella, Esperanza and Jasper (two mules and a donkey) suffer from severe arthritis and joint injuries so they in particular really needed to keep warm and dry... What amazed us most is how easily they got used to the rugs that they all wore for the first time in their lives! We thank you all at The Donkey Sanctuary for remembering our small island... and we wish that 2012 will bring more proper owners and less pain to the animals!”

Andrew Judge, The Donkey Sanctuary’s Head of European Operations, explains the charity’s connection with Santorini:
“The Donkey Sanctuary has been working on the island of Santorini since 2006, when our late founder, Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, began campaigning for better conditions for donkeys and mules working as tourist taxis, and for the establishment of a cable car as an alternative means of transport.

“After years of campaigning, and working closely with SAWA and the local authorities, we recently established a code of practice setting out acceptable standards of animal welfare and ensuring that only animals fit enough to work are allowed to do so. It also sets out limits on the number of donkeys and mules an operator can hire out as tourist taxis on any one day. In September 2011 we were pleased to see this code of practice enforced by fines for those who were found not to comply with this legislation which protects the welfare of these hardworking animals. The donated rugs will help ensure that these animals can enjoy a warm and dry retirement.”

The Donkey Sanctuary continues to urge visitors to the island to keep a close eye on the condition of donkeys and mules, and only ride a tourist taxi once they have considered the following:

•Water, Food, Rest – is it obvious the animals have these?
•Weight – are you too heavy (suggested comfortable weight guidelines are 50kilos for a donkey, 80kilos for a mule)?
•Tack – is it in good condition?
•Visitors are being asked to send information – along with photographs and video, if possible – if they have any concerns about the condition of donkey or mules on the island.

About The Donkey Sanctuary
International animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary was founded by the late Dr Elisabeth Svendsen M.B.E. in 1969 and aims to protect donkeys and mules and promote their welfare worldwide.

The Donkey Sanctuary supports projects to relieve the suffering of donkeys in 29 countries worldwide, including sanctuaries across Europe, where more than 14,500 donkeys and mules have been cared for, and major projects in Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Kenya and Mexico, where donkey welfare is improved through community education and veterinary work.

Any donation, no matter how small, is gratefully received by The Donkey Sanctuary and one of the best ways to support the charity into the future is to give regularly by direct debit.

For further information telephone: 01395 578222, view www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk or visit the charity’s headquarters near Sidmouth in Devon (open 365 days/free admission).

Heat of the Moment

Asia in Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom at night is something of a rare sight. The park used to close around sunset, with the exception of some extra hours for hotel guests on Disney property. However, there seems to be some fresh thinking happening at Animal Kingdom. Someone realized there are other things to do there besides visit the animals. It turns out the park is actually quite beautiful at night.

That’s why I was having a wonderful time taking photos. It was new. It was beautiful. I had a new Nikon 14-24mm lens that I’d just bought. Life was grand! Then some girl named Angie came up to me and said I had to stop taking pictures because I had a “big” camera. She said it would be alright if I had a “little” camera. It totally ruined my night. There I was in the heat of the moment, finding one beautiful scene after another, only to get shot down by the man – or, in this case, a short woman.

They have a saying at Walt Disney World – Have a magical day! Maybe she lost her pixie dust.

Buceros bicornis

Family/Sub-family Bucerotidae

Species name author Linnaeus, 1758

Range & population Buceros bicornis has a wide distribution, occurring in China (rare resident in west and south-west Yunnan and south-east Tibet), India (locally fairly common, but declining), Nepal (local and uncommon, largely in protected areas), Bhutan (fairly common), Bangladesh (vagrant), Myanmar (scarce to locally common resident throughout), Thailand (widespread, generally scarce but locally common), Laos (formerly common; currently widespread but scarce and a major decline has clearly occurred), Vietnam (rare and declining resident), Cambodia (rare), Peninsular Malaysia (uncommon to more or less common) and Indonesia (uncommon on Sumatra).

Ecology: This species frequents evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, ranging out into open deciduous areas to visit fruit trees and ascending slopes to at least 1,560 m. The abundance of this species tends to be correlated with the density of large trees, and it is therefore most common in unlogged forest.

Threats Logging is likely to have impacted this species throughout its range, particularly as it shows a preference for forest areas with large trees that may be targeted by loggers. Forest clearance for agriculture is also likely to have contributed to declines. It is particularly susceptible to hunting pressure as it is large, visits predictable feeding sites (such as fruiting trees) and its casques are kept or sold as trophies.

Poisonous caterpillars are the latest species to become a dangerous threat to make its way to Florida.

There are four types of venomous caterpillars that use their spines to attack by projecting poison at potential enemies.

Of all the unusual species to call south Florida home - from African rats to burmese pythons - these types of caterpillars can cause the worst anguish.

'It's a very painful sting,' Dr Bernstein told the newspaper. 'We even see people pass out from the pain.'

The four types of caterpillars with the awful venom include the saddleback caterpillar, the puss caterpillar, the io caterpillar and the hag caterpillar.

When they attack humans, the venom can be unbearable, particularly if the saddleback releases its poison.

South Florida resident Michael Stanwyck told the Sun-Sentinel: It's like somebody lit you on fire.'

He went on to say: 'A bee sting times a hundred.'

THE FOUR TYPES OF POISONOUS CATERPILLARS IN FLORIDA

There are four types of poisonous caterpillars living in Florida and stinging humans:
Io caterpillar

...The io caterpillar, which turns into a colorful moth at full maturity, releases venom when it encounters the slightest touch, or threat.

...Saddleback caterpillar

The saddleback caterpillar have been known to be the most painful as their poison can feel like 'a bee sting times a hundred.' They have 'horns' on each end of their body and their stings can cause swelling and nausea.

...Hag caterpillar

The hag caterpillar, which is light to brown in color, is not as common as the other types with their hairs being used to sting.

...Puss caterpillar

The puss caterpillar have stiff spines with poison glands under their soft hair that break off onto humans' skin causing great pain when they are touched.

The species is most threatening around this time of year in Florida as the weather starts to get warmer.

Eggs begin to hatch and the caterpillars grow to become moths.

Some people, although rare, can have an allergic reaction to the toxins. and are encouraged to call 911 or go to hospital.

They can experience vomiting, shortness of breath and other reactions.

Others with less severe attacks can be treated at home by calling Poison Control.

Scotch tape can be placed over the wounded area and stripped off over and over again to remove the spines from within the skin.

Although their poison is painful, the caterpillars are not looking to harm anyone or anything. Jaret Daniels, assistant professor of entomology at the University of Florida, told the Sun-Sentine that they are merely trying to protect themselves.

The venom is used as the caterpillars' predators, like birds and lizards.

Mr Daniels said: If you're a caterpillar, you have a very challenging life because everything wants to eat you.

'They're not trying to hurt you. They're doing it to avoid being eaten.'

Florida has become a popular new home for interesting creatures, including crocodiles that can grow up to 14 feet long.

The reptiles have multiplied 10-fold in the last 40 years in south Florida with about 1,500 crocodiles.
But now they face a new challenge in the area because most of the places they used to call home are now inhabited by humans.

Humans in Florida also have to worry about huge pythons that are wiping out the state's mammal populations.

A burgeoning population of Burmese pythons — many of them pets that were turned loose by their owners when they got too big — appears to be wiping out large numbers of raccoons, opossums, bobcats and other mammals in the Everglades, according to a study from the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences.

Here to stay?: Once crocodiles decide on a place to live, it's difficult to get them to move meaning people in Florida might have to get used to having the species listed as 'threatened' by wildlife officials

The study found that sightings of medium-size mammals are down dramatically — as much as 99 percent, in some cases — in areas where pythons and other large, non-native constrictor snakes are known to be lurking.

Scientists fear the pythons could disrupt the food chain and upset the Everglades' environmental balance in ways difficult to predict.

Another species that has threatened the state's environment are giant Gambian pouch rats that have been found on Florida's Grassy Key despite concerted efforts by conservation officials to eradicate them.

Officials worry that the voracious rats, which grow to nine pounds, might wipe out some crops and upset the delicate ecological balance if they manage to reach the Florida mainland.

Officials worry that the voracious rats, which grow to nine pounds, might wipe out some crops and upset the delicate ecological balance if they manage to reach the Florida mainland.

The Gambian rat first appeared on Grassy Key in 1999 after eight rats escaped from a local exotic pets breeder.

'We thought we had them whipped as of 2009,' Scott Hardin, exotic-species coordinator for the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told keysnet.com.

'In the early part of 2011, a resident e-mailed me and said he saw one of the rats. We were skeptical but went back and talked to people and [saw] there were rats that we missed,' he added.

After four female rats were found in 2011, officials unsuccessfully launched another effort to kill them in November and December, primarily through the use of poison-laced cantaloupe and peanut butter.

And it might become difficult to control crocodiles' interaction with humans if that population continues to grow.

Crocodiles tend to stick to an area they decided they will live in now matter how much they have moved.

So even if they leave a particular spot they chose as their own for weeks and travel far away, they are likely to return.

They will likely continue to be one of the many species like boa constrictors, Nile monitor lizards, vervet monkeys and more to join the state - and wreak havoc on local animal species.

I've been stung by these 7 or 8 times during the last 2 weeks....

This may sound strange, but I promise you it works - Take a small clump of chewing tobacco, wet it, and leave it on the area where you got stung for about a minute or two...The pain will be gone almost immediately. I think what we have is Kodiak Wintergreen or something like that (no I don't chew the stuff), but it's in a small can; probably -/can, and well worth having around!

Works for bee stings too.
