Lady Noir video

Image by Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue
Lady Noir has been at the shelter since March 2007. She was found an apartment complex, and appeared to be very traumatized by her life on the streets. Worse, she had a large abcess on her back. Once that healed, she became a little friendlier, and started to live in the in the kitten Room.

After Lady Noir had lived at the shelter for a while, she discovered Sam, a big, mellow tabby. Sam and Lady Noir became fast friends and could often be seen curled up together grooming each other or just smiling at the rest of the world.

We think that Sam taught her how to love people and ask for petting and treats. She's very friendly towards humans now, and loves to be massaged and scratched when people pass by the cat tower where she sleeps. Her friend Sam was adopted, and sometimes Lady Noir can be seen cuddling up to a different male cat.

Lady Noir has a good life at the shelter, but would prefer to spend the rest of her days in a loving home. She gets along extremely well with male cats. Why don't you come down to the shelter and meet Lady Noir? You'll be glad you did.

Underwater Photography - Abort, Retry, Fail

Some cool facts about animals images:

Underwater Photography - Abort, Retry, Fail
facts about animals
www.messersmith.name/wordpress/2010/01/04/underwater-phot...
Back in the Bad Old Days of MS-DOS, if you were working with computers you would see, probably once an hour (it seemed so, anyway) the unhelpful message on your screen: Abort, Retry, Fail. None of these three suggestions were ever of much help. It was Microsoft's way of saying, "That's not gonna happen, man." Yeah, sure, you could usually figure out what was causing the problem, but most of the time there wasn't much you could do about it.

You'll be happy to hear that there is a way that you can once again experience these excruciating moments: through the magic of underwater photography. I've collected a little gallery of horrors to illustrate a few of they infinite things that can go terribly wrong. I hope it amuses you, as an observer, more than it does me, as a practitioner.

SUBJECT RUNS AWAY

I wanted, longed, deeply desired, the moment that I saw this fish to capture its soul in digital bits. Sadly, the job is botched. This is a rather rare yellow colour variation of the Blackspotted Puffer (Arothron nigropunctatus):

When I say rare, I mean that I have never seen this species with as much yellow on its body. It really is a beauty. This one, as you can see, was at a cleaning station - it's like a car wash for fish. The underpaid and little appreciated workers in this car wash are the little cleaner-fish, one of which you can see here vainly chasing the Puffer in hopes of gobbling a few more parasites from its skin. You can see the little Bluestriped Cleanerfish trailing along behind. These little puffers run away (probably screaming in fishy terror) as soon as anything big approaches. They don't swim very fast - just fast enough to spoil the shot.

The observant observer will note the the image is spoilt by motion blur. I was trying to pan the camera to follow the movement of the fish, which should have produced a reasonably sharp image of the fish with a motion blurred background. As it happens, I got it half right; both fish and background are blurred by the camera movement. I'm putting this one in the RETRY category. The big problem is that I may never see such a magnificent specimen again.

SUBJECT LOOKS PRETTY UNDERWATER - TERRIBLE ON THE SCREEN

These little Striped Catfish (Plotosus lineatus) looked ever so pretty fluttering in the lazy current along the bottom at the Eel Garden close to Pig Island on Saturday: However, the finished image is sadly lacking any interest whatsoever. You had to be there. As soon as I started working with the image I realised that the magic was in the motion. You can't truly capture motion in a still image. I'm putting this one in the FAIL category.

SUBJECT IS A CAMERA TEASER

This juvenile Midnight Snapper (Macolor macularis) is a pretty cool fish. They don't look anything like the adult, which is a big brown lump of a thing. However, cool or not, this fish is a nightmare to photograph. Like many fish, it has an inbuilt standoff distance or "comfort zone" which you can, under no circumstances, violate. If it could talk it would be saying, "Back off, Jack!":

I did manage to get this rather pathetic shot from about four feet away with the flash turned on. It was as close as I could get. Apparently not many photographers have done a lot better. I Googled for images of this species and didn't find anything much clearer than the shot above, except for images that were obviously shot in aquariums. I'll let this one pass with a RETRY.

SUBJECT DARTS AROUND FRANTICALLY

This rather uncommon species, the Red And Black Anemonefish (Amphiprion melanopus) swims spasmodically back and forth in its host and never even gives you an adequate opportunity to frame the shot. If fact, you're lucky if the fish is even in the frame when you push the shutter release. I only barely managed to catch it in this shot: This is compounded by the confounded shutter lag that is common in point-and-shoot cameras. I'd guess that the Canon G10 I'm currently using waits about a third of a second before capturing the image after I press the shutter release. So now, you have to guess where the fish is going to be during your next eye-blink. It's like guessing which grain of popcorn will explode next. This one can only be a RETRY.

SUBJECT DOES SOMETHING INAPPROPRIATE

Sometimes you just get a surprise. I would not ordinarily take a picture of an animal defecating. It's simply not that interesting unless you're a kid obsessed with scatological humour. We were at the deep end of the Eel Garden's sandy slope where I was shooting the Red and Black Anemonefish when my dive buddy Carol Dover directed my attention to this big Sea Cucumber (Thelenota anax):

As you can plainly see, it was enjoying a nice, leisurely, satisfying poop. Without going into the unsavory anatomical details, I'll simply point out the you can clearly see where the poop came from. There's quite a bit of it, since the critter eats about 99% sand and digests only the digestible bits. All the rest comes out as tidy little sand sausages.

I'm putting this one in the ABORT category.

Hopefully you can kind of tell I'm smiling in the 2nd picture?

Since I accidentally forgot to take the previous day's picture, I made this a twofer. One apologetic, and one fun.

I've decided that sh*t happens, and I'm just going to end up missing some days now and then. Instead of skipping it, I'll just skip the day like it never happened, and pick the count up where I left off on the next day. Who are you -- INTERNET -- to make me feel bad for screwing up a voluntary project? HMMM?

That's what I thought.

White Wagtail

Wilhelma zoological and botanical gardens, Stuttgart, Germany

The White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) is a small passerine bird in the wagtail family Motacillidae, which also includes the pipits and longclaws. This species breeds in much of Europe and Asia and parts of north Africa. It is resident in the mildest parts of its range, but otherwise migrates to Africa. It has a toehold in Alaska as a scarce breeder. In some areas, notably Britain and Ireland, the sub-species Pied Wagtail (M. a. yarrellii) predominates.

This is an insectivorous bird of open country, often near habitation and water. It prefers bare areas for feeding, where it can see and pursue its prey. In urban areas it has adapted to foraging on paved areas such as car parks.

It nests in crevices in stone walls and similar natural and man-made structures.

This coyote (Canis Latrans) was walking up and down by a rest stop near Glacier Point, begging for food from every car that slowed down. I was lucky enough to have the right lens attached and got several very close shots through the open car window.

Although there are strict rules against feeding the wildlife, I have to assume that these are ignored by enough visitors that animals like this one associate cars with food.

Bullfight
photo of animals
It's quite hard to post those photos. Bullfighting is very long traditional event in Spain but people like me from outside of Spain might think it's brutal. For me it's more like documenting what I saw not I liked it so much. I think it should be forbidden.

From a technical point of view it has three parts called “tercios” or “suertes”: sticks, barbed darts and finally the matador’s stick with a red flag attached to it. The president of the fight, which includes six fights lasting 20 minutes each.

When the bull enters and during the first part, the matador in his traditional costume raises the red and gold flag. He makes sweeping motions with the cape and helpers both on foot and on horseback drive their lances into the bull, gauging the liveliness and characteristics of their opponent.
During the second part of the fight three pairs of darts are driven into the bull’s neck. In the final and the most distressing part of the fight the bullfighter becomes a killer.

This is the most dangerous part where he attracts the injured animal towards him. At the last moment he must kill the beast with a single thrust of his sword.

"For one week a year, thousands of locals and tourists gather, and pay to witness the a ritual which is advertised as glorious and entertaining (for the benefit of pompously dressed up males with questionable skills in avoiding collision with a big animal) but is in fact nothing short of gorry, gruesome and truly sad. Old and sick bulls are chosen to be killed in those rituals, and they are being weakened for weeks before the "fight".

They put laxatives in their food and heavy sandbags on their backs. They are often beaten. They file their horns down to the tender quick and they drug them. Prior to the Running, electric prods and sharp sticks are used to rile the bulls in a frenzy. Petroleum jelly is put in their eyes to blind them. Wet newspaper is stuffed in their ears and their vocal cords are cut to prevent the audience to hear their cries. Lances are driven into the bulls' neck muscles so they can't lift their heads. By the time the matador appears the bulls are weak from blood loss and disoriented from being chased in circles.

When the "fight" finally begins, the bull is already on the verge of collapsing, held only by his last instinct of survival. All dignity is stripped down from him and he is confused, desperate and suffering. Then, in the ring, the toreador slaughters the bull by stabbing the bull repeatedly in the spine. The bull's death is slow and not just ugly, it's petrifying and maddening. Often he wears long blankets to hide their entrails, which spill out when they are gorged and disemboweled."
