Red Panda, Darjeeling Zoo, West Bengal / Gorkhaland, India

Some cool endangered animals images:

Red Panda, Darjeeling Zoo, West Bengal / Gorkhaland, India

Darjeeling Zoo (correctly, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park) while most certainly being a zoo, is also a breeding centre for the red panda (also known as the firefox). The red panda is the state animal of Sikkim, the state to the north of West Bengal/Ghorkaland, and is severely endangered due to hunting and habitat destruction.

The breeding program at the zoo aims to re-introduce more red pandas into the wild and re-establish the species in the hills of Bengal and Nepal.

For that reason, and also because the tiger they have there is rescued from a circus, and because they also have breeding programmes for the Himalayan wolf and the Snow Leopard, I think this particular zoo deserves support.

Grand Canyon Nat Park: Elk (Cervus elaphus) in Winter: 1815
animal pound
Elk (Cervus elaphus) are frequently seen in and around Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Bull elk grow antlers annually from the time they are nearly one year old. When mature, a bull’s "rack" may have 6 to 8 points or tines on each side and weigh more than 30 pounds. The antlers are usually shed in March or April, and begin regrowing in May, when the bony growth is nourished by blood vessels and covered by furry-looking "velvet." Antler growth ceases each year by August, when the velvet dries up and bulls begin to scrape it off by rubbing against trees, in preparation for the autumn mating season or rut.

A bull may gather 10-30 cows into his harem during the mating season, often clashing or locking antlers with another mature male for the privilege of dominating the herd group. By November, mating season ends. Calves weighing 25-40 pounds are born in late May or early June. NPS photo by Michael Quinn.

Never approach wild animals. Photograph all wildlife from the safety of your vehicle. Use telephoto lenses and observe quietly. It is dangerous, and illegal, to feed wild animals in a national park. Violators will be fined. Wildlife can become dependent upon handouts and lose their ability to hunt and forage. Such animals lose their fear of humans. They can become aggressive and bite, kick, or gore. Many are struck by cars while searching for handouts. Help us keep wildlife wild. Never feed or approach wildlife.

This is one of the many wonderful cats you will find at the Orange County Animal Shelter. Many of the cats are sent to the adoption center of various PetsMart stores, but you can also come to the shelter to meet them.

You can find info on adoption hours and costs at: www.petfinder.com/shelters/orange.html

Cats are spayed/neutered, negative on leukemia and FIV and current on their vet work.

If you want a cat to be a friend to your current pet, wonderful! If you don't have any other cats at home, consider adopting a pair so they have company.

Orange County Shelter cats are adopted as indoor cats.

Already have a full house? What about blogging about our wonderful shelter cats to help get them homes? Thanks!

Cool Animals That Are Extinct images

Beautiful Flowers - Botanic Gardens, Dublin
animals that are extinct
In 1790, the Irish Parliament, with the active support of The Speaker of the House, John Foster, granted funds to the Dublin Society (now the Royal Dublin Society), to establish a public botanic garden. In 1795, the Gardens were founded on lands at Glasnevin.

The original purpose of the Gardens was to promote a scientific approach to the study of agriculture. In its early years the Gardens demonstrated plants that were useful for animal and human food and medicine and for dyeing but it also grew plants that promoted an understanding of systematic botany or were simply beautiful or interesting in themselves.

Today, the overall design and contents of the Garden creates an environment that is stimulating, whether you visit for instruction or pleasure.
Within the living collections at the National Botanic Gardens they have over 300 endangered species from around the world, and 6 species already extinct in the wild. These are a vital resource, like a Noah's Ark for the future.

One of my best animal portraits to date. This white wolf resides in the mountain slope of Grouse Mountain in Vancouver B.C. I'm not quite sure why its coat looks like its shedding. Anyways, the pack was howling when we got there but didn't get to check it out why it's all happening.

Feel his dominant presence here.

Elephant Family Tree
animals
The evolution of elephants can be pushed back as far as the Eocene, around 55 million years ago. However I'm only concerned with roughly their last 100,000 years of evolution.

The tree shows an early divergence of mastodon from mammoths with the African elephant evolving sometime between that split. Pygmy mammoths are shown to be closely related to Imperial mammoths. The divergence time was probably only a few thousand years from the time that the mammoth found themselves on the Channel Islands. Woolly mammoths are shown as a relatively late adaptation to the cold, Pleistocene climates. These mammoth are all shown to be on the lineage that led to the Indian elephant.

Orangutan
Orangutans are the only exclusively Asian genus of extant great ape. The largest living arboreal animals, they have longer arms than the other, more terrestrial, great apes. They are among the most intelligent primates and use a variety of sophisticated tools, also making sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. Their hair is typically reddish-brown, instead of the brown or black hair typical of other great apes.
Native to Indonesia and Malaysia, orangutans are currently found only in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, though fossils have been found in Java, the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Vietnam and Mainland China. There are only two surviving species, both of which are endangered: the Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and the critically endangered Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii). - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orangatang

Whale Rescue Burleigh Heads
Out taking some morning photo’s, when I notice a baby whale caught in the Shark nets off Burleigh Heads. I rang the police who get the Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries who are in charge of the net to start the rescue. The men and woman from the Fisheries and Sea World did a fantastic job in freeing the entangled baby whale. They where two very large whales (the mother and escort???) swimming around the baby and staying very close while the rescue was performed. (by a very experience whale rescue team) ....."The sooner we know that we have an entanglement, the better chance we have of a successful release," he said.

www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2009/10/13/147631_gold-coast...
Queensland Shark Control Program Manager Tony Ham said public assistance was needed with reporting suspected entanglements.
"Anyone who sees a whale or other marine life entangled in shark control equipment can call the 24-hour hotline on 1800 806 891.

"With a significant increase in the whale population - approximately 12,000 now migrating each season - entanglements are anticipated at this time of year as the population makes its journey back to southern waters," Mr Ham said.

Including today's entanglement, since 2000 28 whales have been caught in shark control equipment in Queensland.

Of these entanglements, 25 whales have been successfully released...Congratulation to all.........

Lion (Panthera leo)

The lion is one of the four big cats in the genus Panthera, and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with an endangered remnant population in Gir Forest National Park in India, having disappeared from North Africa and Southwest Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, across Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru. The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of thirty to fifty percent over the past two decades in its African range. Lion populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion

Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata)

Also called Somali Giraffe. is a subspecies of giraffe native to Somalia, northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia. Reticulated giraffes can interbreed with other giraffe subspecies in captivity or if they come into contact with populations of other subspecies in the wild.

The reticulated giraffe is among the most well-known of the nine giraffe subspecies, and together with the Rothschild giraffe it is by far the giraffe most commonly seen in zoos.[1] Its coat consists of large, polygonal liver-colored spots outlined by a network of bright white lines. The blocks may sometimes appear deep red and may also cover the legs. The extraordinary height of giraffes is attributed to a ritual known as "necking" where two males fight for reproduction rights by slamming their necks into one another. The giraffes with the tallest and strongest necks are victorious and allowed to reproduce, thus passing these genes on to future generations. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giraffa_camelopardalis_reticulata

Cool Names For Animals images

Some cool names for animals images:

Burleigh Heads_50_020810
names for animals
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is one of the most easily recognized birds in Australia. With its strident call and brilliant white feathers, it is a common sight throughout open timbered country in the eastern and northern parts of the country.

Here at Billabong Sanctuary we would like you to meet Jacko, a female who has been with us for many years. She can usually be seen on her perch beside the Koala Crescent , and will appreciate a friendly word and happily pose for a photo.

What’s in a Name?

The scientific name Cacatua galerita means ‘capped cockatoo’. Kakatua is the Indonesian word for a cockatoo, and the species name derives from the Latin galer meaning cap, referring to the bright yellow crest. Sulphur-crested Cockatoos are members of the Psittacidae family of birds, or the ‘true’ parrots. All have stocky bodies, medium-sized wings, strong, hooked beaks, and feet with two forward-facing and two backwards-facing toes.

What do they Look Like?

These birds really are unmistakable. Their all-over brilliant white plumage is visible from many kilometres away, silhouetted against distant hills or outlined against the horizon . Among the largest of our parrots, they can reach half a metre in length (18 inches).

The other distinctive feature is the long, recurved crest of bright yellow feathers.

The crest seems to reflect the bird's emotions. When it is excited or alarmed, the feathers are fully extended, reaching far forward over the bird's head. A bird at rest, or one which doesn’t feel well, will have its crest feathers flattened against the back of its head.

A less obvious feature is the subtle wash of pale yellow colouring along the cheeks and ear coverts, and on the underside of the wing and tail feathers. The yellow colour can be seen when the bird is silhouetted in flight against the sky-- kind of a lemon meringue pie effect.

Like all parrots, the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo has a powerful beak; the beak is black, but appears grey because of the powdering of white dust used for grooming its feathers. A bird with a shiny black beak is generally unhealthy, possibly a victim of psittacine beak and feather virus. The feet are also dark grey with black claws. As in all parrots, there are two forward-facing toes, and two rear-facing toes.

Males and females look alike; only up close and in strong light can it be noticed that the eye of the female has a lighter, reddish-coloured iris. Males have very dark brown irises. From a distance, eyes of all birds look black. Males have slightly larger heads, and stand taller than females, but the birds have to be seen in pairs for this difference to be noticeable.
