Glum Ninjas C.P.F. is a covert protection force for people who want inconspicuous protection. They disguise themselves as run-of-the-mill stuffed animals and keep a watchful eye, waiting to spring into action at the first sign of danger.

Glum Ninjas are around 8 inches tall by about 7.5 inches wide and are ok for gentle play but they are made of felt which will give way if treated too roughly so they are probably more suited for collectors and plush-a-holics rather than small children.(some toys are too cool for kids) All Glum Ninjas are named, cataloged and come with an authentic Glum Ninja coin that identifies them.

The Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a baleen whale. One of the larger rorqual species, adults range in length from 12–16 metres (40–50 ft) and weigh approximately 36,000 kilograms (79,000 lb). The Humpback has a distinctive body shape, with unusually long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. It is an acrobatic animal, often breaching and slapping the water. Males produce a complex whale song, which lasts for 10 to 20 minutes and is repeated for hours at a time. The purpose of the song is not yet clear, although it appears to have a role in mating.

Found in oceans and seas around the world, Humpback Whales typically migrate up to 25,000 kilometres each year. Humpbacks feed only in summer, in polar waters, and migrate to tropical or sub-tropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter. During the winter, Humpbacks fast and live off their fat reserves. The species' diet consists mostly of krill and small fish. Humpbacks have a diverse repertoire of feeding methods, including the spectacular bubble net fishing technique.

Like other large whales, the Humpback was a target for the whaling industry, and its population fell by an estimated 90% before a whaling moratorium was introduced in 1966. Stocks of the species have since partially recovered, however entanglement in fishing gear, collisions with ships, and noise pollution are ongoing concerns. Current estimates for the abundance of Humpback Whales range from about 30,000 to 60,000, approximately one third of pre-whaling levels. Once hunted to the brink of extinction, Humpbacks are now sought out by whale-watchers, particularly off parts of Australia and the United States.

Eucerine Bee

This appears to be a eucerine bee; tribe Eucerini, subfamily Apinae, family Apidae. Judging by the unusually long antennae (from which the tribe gets its name), this would be a male. Found in a garden in Burleigh County, North Dakota, on an early August evening. It appeared to be sleeping on the end of a plant with another of its kind that flew away eventually.

If anyone can confirm this bee's identity, and/or identify a genus or species, that would be greatly appreciated.

Image by Rev. Xanatos Satanicos Bombasticos (ClintJCL)
This guy escaped within 2 minutes of this picture being taken, due to Carolyn setting the trap up wrong AND clipping the wrong part of the trap closed. These traps are only so good. Unfortunately, the rear "door" (left in this picture) can be escaped from if you push hard enough to bend metal, which raccoons do. Carolyn clipped it (not part of the original cage) on the top-left instead of the bottom-middle. It is metaphorically like trying to keep a door from opening by tying a rope around the hinges -- it just makes no sense. :) (Admittedly though, someone not experienced with the trap would probably make the same mistake. But we've been using this trap for years.)

But then Carolyn noticed that she hadn't set the trap correctly either. (Setting/baiting the traps is her job, dealing with the wild animal and repair contractors is my job, and I'd gladly trade.)

Lessons learned for next time! If I set the cage outside, I'll set it with the rear facing a wall, so it can't be opened. Maybe put it between a rock and a hard place so there's now way out. And the rear "door" (kind of a design flaw, really) is now clipped correctly. And Carolyn has already re-deployed it, correctly set up.

Anyway, it was NOT a fun 30 minute ordeal at 6:30AM while both of us were sleeping. especially since it resulted in nothing other than the acknowledgement that we just failed to capture yet another raccoon that did yet another 0 of damage to our house. If anyone wants to pay for my house repairs, you can have my raccoons. Otherwise, I'm going to figure out how to most easily kill them, because they home up to 5 miles and come back and continue to damage your property.

This fucker ripped off the opposing soffit to our addition; when this happened last time, it cost 0 to repair.

My largest hunting knife was right there, open-bladed, laying in the attic, a foot from this varmint. I had an opportunity to plunge its blade into this fucker's brain, but no, I didn't take it. (Actually, it wouldn't be possible to stab through a cage....)

Seriously, though -- how does one swiftly kill a raccoon in a cage so that it doesn't suffer? I'm done driving these guys to the park -- for all I know this is one that we already trapped in the past. Anyone want to come remove the bags of shit in my attic? No? Fine. It's just going to sit there forever. My 0 ladder is not tall enough to get to the soffit to fix it from outside -- and it's rather perilous to get to that point within the attic (only really possible without a major hassle due to the attic ladder we installed this year, which was in response to raccoons).

I just them dead. All of them. On the entire planet. I would press an extinction button in a second without a thought. Destroy all raccoons.

So can I drown them? I have a plastic tub outside. That seems really drawn out and mean, but it can be done while they are still in the cage without having to touch them or make a bloody mess.

I can't shoot it with my gun because it's not legal to fire my gun on my property. And it would be a bad idea to drop them into my well, where they would stink up my emergency water supply.

And no, before you ask -- animal control does not do anything in this situation. If it's in your attic, it doesn't fall under their jurisdiction, and if it is trapped, it does not fall under their jurisdiction.

Incidentally, the wooden "stakes" are the old tripod legs from my childhood telescope (which was my dad's childhood telescope). We recently decommissioned it (I keep the screws from things I throw away, they often come in handy later). I decided to keep the stakes. Figured they'd come in handy. Naught but a week later, I'm using the stakes to make sure it's mouth can't get near the handle of the cage. Don't want raccoon rabies. Although they have only killed one American in history, I still don't want raccoon rabies. I'd be the type to not go to the doctor and become the 2nd one to die from it... Anyway, I'm amazed how random pieces of wood find uses in the strangest situations.

I never used to know how much we'd screwed over deer until I read Matthew Scully's Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy. It covers hunting and the habitat destruction that leads to road deaths. Great book.

Drew this in ink, then later colored it in using Photoshop. I was rather happy with the way the brushwork turned out. It's based on a photo of a deer killed by a car that I found in a magazine. This is the original drawing.

Eurasian Oystercatcher
all about animals
The oystercatcher can be found year round in all British coastal areas, and further inland during the summer months. There are about 40,000 breeding UK pairs with approximately 350,000 birds overwintering from other parts of Europe. They nest on the ground, piling up shingle and small stones to make a nest large enough for 2 - 4 eggs. Coastal birds feed on small molluscs whilst inland birds feed happily on worms. Despite their name they do not have a strong enough beak to open oysters!

There are more pictures to follow - unfortunately I cannot tell the male and female apart, so I will assume the bird on the nest is the female and the one doing nothing at the moment is the male!

Oyster catchers are listed as an Amber endangered species by the RSPB in the UK

Andrea Leslie counts stream insects
about endangered animals
In April, 2013, the University of Georgia, Land Trust for the Little Tennessee, and a host of other partners organized Macon County’s, N.C.’s first Kids in the Creek event. It brought 8th grade students from across the watershed to Cartoogechaye Creek, to spend a day learning about the stream. During the course of the field trip, students rotated through four statins - water chemistry, hydrology, fish sampling, and aquatic invertebrate sampling. At the stream invertebrate station, the students collected animals, used simple keys to identify what they caught, and reflected on what the number and diversity of their catch says about stream health.
The watershed is home to the endangered Appalachian elktoe mussel, leading to the Service’s commitment to this educational event, specifically helping teach students about the diversity of life in the stream and the importance of the stream’s invertebrates, which includes not only mussels but also insects that form important parts of the stream food web and serve as indicators of stream health.

Hirola bull
about endangered animals
This is Africa's rarest antelope. It was probably never very common and represents a rather primitive line in the Alcelaphine group of antelope (Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Topi, Blesbok and Bontebok).

I was lucky to see this individual who is one of perhaps 50-70 animals derived from a population that were translocated to Tsavo East National park by the Kenyan Wildlife Service in an attempt to establish an out of range "insurance population". In Tsavo they are holding their own despite competition (Hartebeest and Topi) and a high predator population but the best chance for survival of this enigmatic species lies with an exciting partnership project which has been set up within the Hirola's natural range. This project is reliant upon the good will and participation of a group of Kenyan Somali pastoralists who have agreed to turn over a significant part of their land for Hirola conservation.
You can read about Hirola conservation here:
safaritalk.net/page/articles.html/_/articles/the-critical...
and here:
www.nrt-kenya.org/conservancies/Ishaqbini.html

Ishaqbini will hopefully establish tourist facillities in the not too distant future (the area is full of wildlife including lions and wild dogs).

If you are in Tsavo and want to try and see Hirola then check out the circuit that runs from the Aruba dam to Satao camp to Satao airstrip and back to the dam. This is a fairly large area with no off-road driving so you need some luck but they are sighted with some regularity according to the local guides.

Still uploading pictures from my Azores vacation last March. I hope you all aren't sick of them yet.

On our third day of vacation, we drove out to the western end of the island, home to the Sete Cidades volcano and caldera lake. The whole island is very agricultural (mostly dairy farming), and it was hard not to stop frequently to photograph the fields. This is looking northeast, just as the morning fog is starting to lift around 10 am, on the flank of the Sete Cidades massif.
