Galapagos Tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus)
animal pound
There are 14 described subspecies of the Galapagos tortoise of which 11 still exist, some with only small populations. There are "dome-shelled" and "saddle-backed" Galapagos tortoises. Where ground vegetation is the main source of food the animals are dome-shelled. Those that feed on higher growing cactus have a curved shell front to allow their longer neck to reach the pads. Galapagos tortoises vary in size from 29 inches (shell length) and 60 pounds to 4 feet and 700 pounds. There is little variation in color, overall dull-brown being standard. The male has concave underside, which facilitates mating.

Eye of a Yak...
animal pound
I'm sure many of you woke up this morning thinking that you'd love to see an eye of a Yak. Well, here is the eye of a 2,000-pound Yak!

BTW, this is the same male Yak that charged his metal fence during my previous visit to the Zoo when I came up to take a photograph. It scared the hell out of me! A Zoo caretaker saw the 'encounter' and came over so I asked him why in the world did he charge me with such amazing ferocity?

His theory was that I was 'eye-balling' his women! This gigantic Yak has a group of 3 female Yaks and I guess he thought I was paying way too much attention to them trying to photograph them. This may be total BS but that's what the Zoo guy said.

I usually have very cordial relations with Zoo animals but this guy really wanted to stomp me into the ground, you could see it in his eye! When he hit the very strong welded-metal pipe fence, the ground shook and dirt went flying. Plus, the sound of the impact was, to say the least, startling!

Segis Pieterje Prospect
World's Champion Milk Cow
Born 1913 Died 1923
Twice she registered production records that set her fame above all dairy cattle of any age. In each of two years she exceeded 16,500 quarts of milk 1400 pounds of butter, yielding for the two a total of 33,922 quarts of milk - 2860.18 pounds of butter.

Sired by a king and of purest holstein strain - she herself bore sons and daughters of champion achievement - finest type of the noble patient animal that is most justly named.

memorial

In the wee hours of Sunday 23october, Christopher Edwards (AKA Wayne Williams) was being pulled over for a traffic violation, but fled the scene. Moments later (3:10 a.m.), Edwards ran a stop sign at Sherman Ave & Columbia Road, smashing into the car carrying three adults and a 2 year old child.

The adults were injured, but the child succumbed. Edwards was later nabbed hiding under the steps of a residence in Temple Hills, Maryland.

Now Edwards is being held on 2nd-degree murder charges. Turns out he had over 30 points on his DC drivers license, and had a record of reckless driving, running red lights, and other fun stuff. So it seems his charge should be elevated to first-degree assbrain-ism, with a very long prison sentence and, at the very least, he should be vasectomized. Assbrains should not breed.

Anyway, the memorial is still there, looking rather melancholy in its bright colors that refuse to fade after being rained on for a week.

Cool Animal Behavior images

Some cool animal behavior images:

Elk at Jasper Park Lodge 2003
animal behavior
The elk, or wapiti (Cervus canadensis), is one of the largest species of deer in the world and one of the largest mammals in North America and eastern Asia. In the deer family (Cervidae), only the moose, Alces alces (called an "elk" in Europe), is larger, and Cervus unicolor (the sambar deer) can rival the C. canadensis elk in size. Elk are almost identical to red deer found in Europe, of which they were long believed to be a subspecies; however, mitochondrial DNA evidence from 2004 strongly suggests they are a distinct species.

Elk range in forest and forest-edge habitat, feeding on grasses, plants, leaves, and bark. Although native to North America and eastern Asia, they have adapted well to countries where they have been introduced, including New Zealand and Argentina. Their high level of adaptability poses a threat to endemic species and ecosystems where they have been introduced.

Male elk have large antlers which are shed each year. Males engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the rut, including posturing, antler wrestling (sparring), and bugling, a loud series of vocalizations which establishes dominance over other males and attracts females.

Lions Celebrate Their First Birthdays at the Smithsonian's National Zoo

On Sept. 16, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s seven lion cubs celebrated their birthdays at the Great Cats Exhibit.

Keepers created seven gift boxes (one for each cub) that were gift-wrapped with approved paper products and held together with a “paste” made of flower and water. Inside each box was an individual-sized frozen treat made of ice (water), shaved beef and a piece of oxtail.

The Zoo’s Nutrition department created a bloodcicle cake in the shape of the number “1.” The cake weighed about 50 pounds, and was composed of ice (water), two whole cow femurs cut in half, 5 pounds of shaved beef and a half-gallon of cow blood.

The Zoo’s seven lion cubs were born to two mothers. All seven cubs were sired by Luke. Shera gave birth on Aug. 31, 2010 to four cubs: John, Lelie, Fahari and Zuri. Nababiep gave birth on Sept. 22, 2010 to three cubs: Baruti, Aslan and Lusaka.

The Zoo’s lion cubs are genetically valuable in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan for African lions. An SSP matches individual animals across the country for breeding in order to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse and self-sustaining population. They are the first surviving cubs born at the Zoo in 22 years.

Luke, Naba and Shera came to the National Zoo in 2006 from South Africa specifically for the purpose of breeding and introducing new genes into the existing U.S. captive population.

a few days ago i went to an animal refuge in the small bolivian town of samaipata. it had a similar vibe to the monkey sanctuary i went to a couple of years ago in la paz - with most of the animals roaming free. we went to have a closer look at this monkey, when she swung towards us and jumped into the arms of one of my friends. she looked sad, and clearly wanted either attention or affection. when we spoke to one of the staff members we learnt why - her partner had died a week earlier and she was still grieving. cue sympathetic sighs from everyone around and a maternal instinct to provide as much comfort as we could offer.

February 2009: Ava died suddenly. Upon necropsy, it turned out Ava was actually a boy, significantly underweight and full of cancer. He was a very friendly rooster and will be missed.

Ava is a "peeper", our sanctuary-created term for a broiler, the type of chickens people eat. 9.2 billion Avas are slaughtered each year for consumption.

Broilers are bred to grow and grow fast. They are killed when they are only six weeks old. This fast growth rate causes severe health problems: heart attacks are very common (from obesity) as are bone and pelvic breaks.

You can help the Avas by reducing or eliminating meat from your diet.
