Nice Names For Animals photos

Some cool names for animals images:

Dollie Llama
names for animals
The Camelidae family consists of a small family of mammalian animals. There are two members of Old World camels living in Africa and Asia--Arabian and the Bactrian, and four members of the New World camels living in South America--the llamas, vicunas, alpacas and guanacos. They are all very well adapted to their respective environments: the camels in harsh deserts of Africa and Asia; and their South American cousins inhabit the high altiplano and bush area of South America. Most of these species have been integrated into, and play very important roles in lives of the indigenous people. They have been traditionally used for transport of people and things, hides and fibers for clothing and other textile articles, and in many cases they supply meat and milk products, etc. The South American species are being raised in non-native countries for a variety of reasons: as pack animals, pets, guard animals for sheep ranges, and for fiber. Their biology, reproduction, disease susceptibility, behavior, and nutrition have not been studied to any great extent until fairly recently. Because there are now fairly high populations of these animals in the United States and some other temperate countries, there has been more interest and need to understand their needs, in order to provide adequate housing, feed and veterinary care as they are moved from their native environments to new climates, etc. It is with these needs in mind, that this information resource has been compiled.

Oddly enough, the Camelidae evolved in North America. The early ancestors migrated from North America by a crossing the Alaskan land bridge to Asia and the Panama land connection to South America. They eventually became extinct in North America, but began to thrive in their new lands. At one time camels ranged from Asia to Eastern Europe. After crossing into Africa, they were found across the entire northern region and as far south as northern Tanzania. The South American members of the family found their niche in the cool, dry mountain areas of that continent.

Each of the South American camelids has unique qualities, value and can be used as a source of a wide range of services and products useful to humans. Therefore, a short description and use of each of these interesting and quite tractable animals follows. The animals are medium sized, with the males being somewhat larger than the females. Their heads have a straight profile. They have no horns or antlers. They have large eyes and thick lashes. The ears are long and pointed. One obvious feature that is different from camels is the lack of a hump as their backs are straight. Their foot pads are proportionately smaller than a camel's because they need to move securely on rocky trails and gravel mountain slopes. Since they live in cold, dry places, they have very dense, wooly coats. They may kick or spit if threatened.

As mentioned above, there are probably just basically two species. All four types have been found to breed in captivity, so genetic relationships are uncertain. The llamoid or camelid is a common name for this group.

Llamas* (Lama glama)

Llamas are medium sized animals and can weigh up to 300 pounds. Males are somewhat larger than the females. They are used for fiber and as unusual pack animals in many countries around the world. Currently, they are being used for hauling carts and driving, pet therapy with elderly and disabled persons and as guard animals in large free-range sheep operations. They are environmentally sensitive and intelligent. They are also extremely gentle and used as pet therapy because of their calming effect. They seldom bite or butt and they have no horns, hooves, or claws to do injury. They are alert, curious, adaptable, and predictable with docile, disarming temperaments. They are adapted to high altitudes because their hemoglobin, a constituent of red blood cells, can absorb more oxygen than that of other mammals. Their red blood cells also have a longer life span than other mammals, an average of 235 days versus 100 days for humans.

Llamas were also used by the ancient Inca civilization in South America. Archeological evidence indicates that they have been domesticated from the wild guanaco approximately 5,000 years ago. Many llamas and alpacas were sacrificed to the gods every year by the Incan culture. The meat would then be distributed to the crowds. Llamas were also an integral part of the Inca's workforce. As pack animals they contributed vastly to the building of their irrigation systems, roads, and temples. They were also used to carry loads in the Inca's mines.

Llamas are still used today by the indigenous peoples of South America for packing and transporting goods, fibers, and for meat. Mostly the males are used as pack animal. They usually carry up to fifty pound loads. Stallions can carry up to 110-176 pounds for about 19 miles (a day's march for a llama). Male pack animals are not sheared. Their heavy wool coat acts as a saddle blanket by cushioning their loads. It has been suggested that the llamas were selectively bred as pack animals leading to a larger stronger animals than their wild parent. The females are sheared, but llama wool is inferior to the alpacas and is often used to make rope. (The alpaca has probably been selected and breed for wool and not as a pack animal.) Llamas only allow themselves to be loaded when they are part of a group. Llamas provide meat, wool, hides for sandals, and fat for candles. Their dung can be dried and used for fuel. South American herders use most parts of a llama's carcass.

A female white-naped crane chick, hatched May 23 at the National Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center, shown at 5 days old with its adoptive parent. The chick is being raised by its paternal grandparents after its human-imprinted mother displayed inappropriate behavior during breeding and was impregnated through artificial insemination. This two-week-old chick is the most genetically important hatchling in the White-Naped Crane Species Survival Program. Destruction of its native wetland habitat in northeast China has dramatically decreased white-naped crane populations in the wild to an estimated 5,000. The National Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center currently has 10 cranes; there are an additional 60 animals in the White-Naped Crane Species Survival Program.

Proboscis Monkey
endangered animals
A distinctive trait of this monkey is the male's large protruding nose, from which it takes its name. The big nose is thought to be used in mating and is a characteristic of the males, reaching up to 7 inches in length. The females also have big noses compared to other monkey species, but not as big as the males. Besides attracting mates, the nose serves as a resonating chamber and works by amplifying their warning calls. When the animal becomes agitated its nose swells with blood, making warning calls louder and more intense.

The Proboscis monkey can be found in island of Borneo in South-east Asia but they are not even found throughout all of Borneo. Due to ongoing habitat loss and hunting in some areas, only about 7000 are known to still exist in the wild. The Proboscis Monkey is evaluated as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. [Wikipedia]

1937 Jaguar SS 100

A few nice the animal pictures images I found:

1937 Jaguar SS 100
the animal pictures
The Jaguar SS100 is a British 2-seat sports car built between 1936 and 1940 by SS Cars Ltd of Coventry, England. The last one is thought to have been delivered in 1941.

The SS Cars Ltd Model 100 "Jaguar" was so named as the '100' reflected the capability of the 3.5-litre model to exceed 100 mph - then a remarkable speed for a production vehicle. In common with many products of the thirties, the adoption of an animal name was deemed appropriate, and once approved by Bill Lyons the name "Jaguar" was given to a new saloon car in 1936, and from that point to all the cars. .

Following the Second World War, because of the connotations then attached to the initials ""SS", the company was renamed Jaguar in 1945.

(Wikipedia)

- - -

The black bear has managed to be quite prolific and successful as bears go. The eighteen known subspecies can be found throughout the United States and Canada. Estimates of the number of black bears in North America vary, with 750,000 being the most often suggested. In the state of Pennsylvania there are believed to be more than 7000 of the animals scattered across the state.

Despite their name, black bears can actually appear in a variety of colors. There are brown black bears, white black bears, and even the blue glacier bear.

Expert estimates of the weights of the bears also seem to vary widely. Conservative measurements put the average weight of the animals is around 300 pounds. However, the degree of sexual dimorphism exhibited by the species makes accurate accounts difficult. The largest black bear recorded was a male shot in Wisconsin in 1885. The bear was 802 pounds, far heavier than would be expected.

They have a wide an varied diet. They can and will eat nearly anything. Typical of bears, they are fond of honey, and are responsible for thousands of dollars worth of damage to aphiaries each year.

The black bear has claws which are shorter and more curved than those of the grizzly bear. This allows it to have a great agility in climbing trees. Often, a sow will encourage her cubs to tree themselves while there is danger. Black bears have a characteristic way of climbing and descending trees. They mostly use their front claws for climbing and keeping a hold.

We recently rescued a German shepherd/ Siberian Husky mix. She is female. @ 6 years old, with a weight of 9 kg (19.84 lbs). She is in a complete state of malnutrition with nosebleeds, mucus, cough, injuries due to close contact of concrete with her bones, external and internal parasites. She was abandoned in the outskirts of town, and has suffered much cruelty and neglect.

Her recovery:

She needs tests of laboratories (blood, urine, wastes etc), x-rays, blood transfusion, antibiotics, antiparasitarios internal and external anti-parasite medicine, multivitamins and a very good diet

I am calling attention to this particular case because this small animal fights by her life, eating meals, taking medicines, etc. Her normal weight should be @ 25 kilos (55.12 lbs).

We've been a little quiet of late but that doesn't mean we haven't been busy! We have in fact been very busy working with dangerous animals and giant stencils on a new bar that has opened in Brixton.

The Electric Social on Acre Lane is now open for business and looking spiffing - complete with id-iom enhanced interior! Scattered throughout we have painted numerous happy woodland animals. There's mice, rats, magpies, a stoat and an owl. Unfortunately there's a couple of bad eggs that have slipped in too - as the bloody squirrels have only been at the crack again! They'll be chewing on the wiring before you know it...

The Brixton crack squirrels were actually inspired by a couple of stories that were reported by The Guardian and The Sun newspapers).

Donna Nook
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Donna Nook is a bombing range on the coast of Lincolnshire, England, north of the village of North Somercotes. The area is salt marsh, and is used by the numerous Royal Air Force bases in Lincolnshire for bombing practice; known as RAF Donna Nook. The resident wildlife fare surprisingly well, and seem to have become accustomed to aircraft bombing near them on a regular basis.

One particular group is the Grey Seal population, which is visited by around 43,000 people a year (2006), and the seals return to breed during October to December every year. Media coverage of Donna Nook has led to this big increase in visitor numbers. The coastline is managed by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve. In 2007, the seal colony had its best breeding season on record, with about 1,194 pups born from the 3,500 resident grey seal colony. A controversial double wooden fence has been erected in 2007 to try to stop people touching the new born pups. If the mother seal detects human or dog scent on its pup, it may be abandoned

Mexican wolves are the smallest subspecies of North American gray wolves. They are also the most endangered. Commonly referred to as "El lobo," the Mexican wolf is gray with light brown fur on its back. Its long legs and sleek body enable it to run fast. Mexican wolves once ranged from central Mexico to southwestern Texas, southern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona. Today, the Mexican wolf has been reintroduced to the Apache National Forest in southeastern Arizona and may move into the adjacent Gila National Forest in western New Mexico as the population expands.
