Nomascus is the second most speciose genus of gibbons (family Hylobatidae). Originally this genus was a subgenus of Hylobates, and all individuals were considered one species, Hylobates concolor. Species within Nomascus are characterized by 52 chromosomes. Some species are all black, some light with a distinct black tuft of crown fur, and some by distinct, light-colored cheek patches. Nomascus is found from southern China (Yunnan) to southern Vietnam, and also on Hainan Island. One of the genus' species, Nomascus nasutus, has been deemed "the most critically endangered ape species in the world". All of the species in this genus are endangered or critically endangered.

That's Why I Crossed the Road
wildlife animals
We spent the morning at the Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in Eatonville. It was a good time to visit, almost nobody was there so it was not crowded. Also all the animals with antlers where at the peak for the year before they loose them for the winter so we got to see their best. This goat was taking his sweet ass time to cross the road in front of the tram; and just stuck out his tongue as he did it.

Red-tailed Hawk with rabbit - yard
wildlife animals
I've got over 100 photos over about 40 feet in different light. This was taken on a dirt path after the hawk scurried along the ground when I got too close. I don't think he could take off with the rabbit. I intentionally got closer so that he would scurry even farther into the sunlight where I got half a dozen portraits. As for that crown he's making, a hawk rehabber friend tells me that he was on alert because he had let me get so close!

Here's his portrait:

Cool Extinct Animals images

A few nice extinct animals images I found:

Steppe Bison
extinct animals
Steppe bison ranged throughout northern Europe, Asia and Beringia during the Ice Age. It lived in Beringia throughout the last 700,000 years, and was one of the most widespread animals of this region. It appeared in only a few scattered places in the rest of western North America.

These large bison were hunted by humans in Europe, Asia and North America. The most recent known fossils are about 8,000 years old. Steppe bison may have evolved into the wood bison and plains bison of today, rather than becoming extinct along with many Ice Age animals 10,000 years ago.

These animals survive on poor quality pasture in the grassland/bush mosaic sandwiched between the wetter coastal forest and the drier thorn-scrub hinterland of eastern Kenya around the Tana river area. It was once also found in a large part of southern Somalia but is very likely now extinct there.

Giving Tree: Help provide the Zoo's animals with great enrichment items

A few nice animal behavior images I found:

Giving Tree: Help provide the Zoo's animals with great enrichment items
animal behavior
Enrichment is an integral part of the daily care of the animals in the National Zoo. It helps animals demonstrate their natural behavior, adds variety to their day, allows them exercise, gives them choices in their environment, and enhances their well-being. Enrichment also gives Zoo scientists the chance to study and observe the animals' behavior.

Zoo staff has created a wish list of items that you can buy and donate to the Zoo, including Kong toys, rubber chew toys, mirrors, laser pointers, radios, feeder balls, feather dusters, tools, and much, much more. Items can be purchased and/or donations can be made on the Zoo’s online enrichment store or you can drop off or purchase at the Giant Panda Gift Shop. Additionally, special Giving Tree toy chests will be set up throughout the Zoo during our annual ZooLights event.

To donate, visit the Zoo’s website at: nationalzoo.si.edu/Support/MakeDonation/GivingTree.cfm.

Posing of a snake

Posing of a snake
names for animals
"We have a snake in our garden" the words of a friend during holliday in Sri Lanka. "Sure", I answered. "Never", I thought. But the friend closed the door. I took a short view in the garden and my first thought was: "Oh, what object lens is the best?". During friend searched for help I forgot all my fears. I wanted to take the best picture and did not notice the nearness.
The snake is not dangerous, the helpers told us. But I don´t know the exact name. Photographed in Sri Lanka.

Aufgenommen in Sri Lanka.

Nein, ich habe nicht gesungen. Das wollte ich der Schlange nicht zumuten ;-) Aufgenommen in Sri Lanka.

Cool Animals Facts images

A few nice animals facts images I found:

Magpie on bookcase
animals facts
We've been a little quiet of late but that doesn't mean we haven't been busy! We have in fact been very busy working with dangerous animals and giant stencils on a new bar that has opened in Brixton.

The Electric Social on Acre Lane is now open for business and looking spiffing - complete with id-iom enhanced interior! Scattered throughout we have painted numerous happy woodland animals. There's mice, rats, magpies, a stoat and an owl. Unfortunately there's a couple of bad eggs that have slipped in too - as the bloody squirrels have only been at the crack again! They'll be chewing on the wiring before you know it...

The Brixton crack squirrels were actually inspired by a couple of 'true' stories (I use true in the loosest sense of the word - mainly that it was reported by The Guardian and The Sun newspapers).

Cheers
